Lake Aquitaine Bikefest Family Ride (5 km & 12 km) and Ontario 55+ Summer Games
The Bikefest family ride takes place on
Saturday August 11, 2018 at 1:00 pm at the Meadowvale Community Centre st 6655 Glen Erin Dr. Come early to watch and cheer those participating in the Ontario 55+ Summer Games (
http://osgmississauga.ca/). The community ride will then use the closed-off Lake Aquitaine Course for part of the route. Parking will not be available at the Community Centre. You are encouraged to arrive by bike, public transit, or be prepared to park away from the event and bike in.

parkrun is a
FREE weekly fun and sociable 5 km run. You can walk,
 run, wheelchair around Lake Aquitaine with a group of residents who want company for a morning activity. It is not a race and you go at your own speed and comfort level.
You can participate any Saturday morning at 9:00 am, just register at
parkrun.ca to have your times recorded online or you can just go out and do any length of a walk or run.

Battleford Community Recycling Centre Begins extended hours
From May 1 through October 31, 2018 the Region's Battleford Community Recycling Centre moves to extended hours and will be open Mondays to Thursdays until 8:00 p.m.

Due to construction of a new parking garage at 2869 Battleford Rd, some residents of this building will be without parking spots. Construction started on
October 2, 2017 and is expected to end on June 1, 2018. Parking is being permitted on Glen Erin Dr between Aquitaine and Battleford. Parking is also being permitted on
the north side of Battleford Rd between Miller's Grove and Edenwood Dr.

As our policy prohibits sending printed or electronic newsletters after June 30 in an election year, this will be my last e-newsletter until after October 22. I hope to commence the regular monthly news at that time.
Although it is an election year, work continues in the Ward 9 office. I will be holding meetings throughout the coming months and I will continue to keep residents up to date as needed on specific issues by email or direct mail. Information will be posted on the Ward 9 website at

Late Johnny Bower Dedication
I am pleased to announce that Council approved my request to dedicate Rink 1 at Meadowvale Four Rinks to the late Johnny Bower.
Johnny was a local resident as well as being a hockey legend. He was especially a caring man who was always willing to support young people. He always had a kind word for all and would respond tirelessly to request for autographs. Sadly Johnny passed away in December 2017 before I could honour him with this dedication but his family will be there to accept on his behalf as we keep his memory alive in the community. I am also pleased to have the support of the Meadowvale Minor Hockey Association and will be working with them as we plan the event.

Boxes and Banners Commemorates MFES 50th Anniversary
You may have noticed the painted / wrapped utility boxes around the city lately. Boxes and Banners is a fun project the Mississauga Arts Council is spearheading and gets local artists to create art on the utility boxes with themes relating to the neighborhoods that they're in.
I am pleased to initiate and sponsor a special utility box wrap this summer at Fire Station 111 on Derry Rd at Glen Erin Dr. I have asked MAC to arrange for a design that will commemorate our Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services and celebrate its 50th anniversary.

Supporting a New Track at John Fraser Secondary School
I am pleased to announce that I am contributing special Ward 9 infrastructure funds toward a new track to be built at John Fraser Secondary School by the Peel District School Board.
This track will be used by the students from many schools during school hours and will be available for the community to use after hours. Encouraging healthy communities is a priority and a good use for the funds.

Tourism Moving Ahead with Hotel Tax Funding
Thanks to my colleagues who supported the proposed uses for the
Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT) that we started collecting in April 2018. This money will help us reduce the pressures on the city's budget as we can now fund tourism related costs from it rather than from tax dollars. My Tourism Board and I have been working towards this goal for some time and I am glad it is finally a reality and we can move ahead with developing our formal Master Plan as well as building our tourism assets.
I have placed Notices of Motion to enable staff to proceed with two projects. One is the feasibility study for a stadium which was highlighted in our report to Council last year and the other is the Mississauga identifier for Celebration Square which was also recommended by the former Celebration Square Committee. The stadium has been a long time ask by both soccer and football organizations and has been a hope of mine for the past 10 years. Both will be funded from the MAT and hopefully will become reality.
There are great opportunities for our city to grow tourism in the future and help support our hospitality industry as well as build our sports tourism.

I am pleased to announce that parkrun has been approved as a permanent volunteer run program. This program runs every Saturday at 9:00 am at Lake Aquitaine.
Thank you to the volunteers, especially Lawrence Jeffery for making this possible. parkrun has welcomed visitors from around the world to Meadowvale since it started in March 2018.

Britannia Road Repaving Update
The Britannia Road project is finally nearing completion and I know residents will be happy when all the construction is finished!!!
All of the boulevard work including the multi-use trail, medians, sod etc. is almost done.
The final top asphalt paving is scheduled to start on Wednesday, July 4th with completion anticipated by Saturday, July 7th, weather permitting.
Work will be done during weekdays from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. to give the contractor a 13-hour working window to significantly increase their production and reduce the impact to commuters and residents .
During paving operations, the intersections of Britannia Road and Paddle Road/Greensboro, Britannia Road and Glen Erin Boulevard and Britannia Road and Erin Mills Parkway will be blocked temporarily for at least 4 hours and/or until the asphalt cools down.
Paving at the intersection of Britannia Road and Winston Churchill Boulevard will be carried out on Saturday, July 7 at around 5:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Paid duty police will be on-site to assist in directing traffic during this operation.
Please drive carefully and I suggest you try to avoid the area during the main construction times.

Protect Against Lyme Disease
I am running this article again because of the fact the ticks are very prevalent this year. The Canadian Health Agency recently warned of 'heightened risk' of ticks that cause Lyme disease and recommends people take protective measures.
Ticks are out in abundance this year and are in our local parks. While the risk for Lyme disease is low according to Peel health it is still a concern.
Lyme Disease is spread by black legged deer ticks and it can be very dangerous to both humans and pets. Click

Please make sure that you protect your family and pets by taking the proper precaution.
Be cautious in wooded and grassy areas and check yourselves and your pets for ticks.
Please report all ticks to Peel Health as they will note locations and will drag the area and test for type. Click here to get more information on Peel Health's role and here for information from Animal Services.

Peel Regional Peel Chief Evans Awarded Highest Award
Congratulations to our Peel Regional Police Chief Jennifer Evans for receiving The Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) OACP President's Award of Merit, the association's highest award. The President's Award of Merit recognizes an OACP member who has demonstrated outstanding dedication and support to the association.
Throughout her career, Chief Evans has demonstrated a passionate commitment to her community, her police service, and policing in Ontario and Canada. Chief Evans' commitment for delivering effective policing is balanced by her compassion for people.

Retail Statutory Holidays Update
I am pleased that my colleagues on Region Council agreed that we will not open up retail shopping on statutory holidays. I have never supported any option for doing so as I firmly believe that workers need some time off to spend these special days with family.
Thank you to all who responded to my survey..you told me clearly you did not want shopping on the holidays and a survey done by Region staff confirmed that the majority of residents agreed.

Play In The Park in Union Park
I am very excited that the Ward 9 Play in the Park program will be offered once again this summer at Union Park.
This is a FREE drop in program for children ages 6-12. The program runs week days from 9 a.m. to 12 noon starting July 2 to August 31. Union Park is on the northeast corner of Aquitaine and Tenth Line.

The 2018 Ontario 55+ Summer Games are coming soon to Mississauga on August 10 - 12, 2018.
As a member of the games committee, I can tell you that these games will be the biggest and best ever. We will be welcoming over 1400 participants from across Ontario to compete in a number of activities and sports.
The Ontario 55+ Games is a celebration of active living hosted every year (alternating between Winter and Summer) for individuals in Ontario who are 55 years of age or older. We will be hosting several events at the Meadowvale Community Centre and at Lake Aquitaine Park so come out and cheer on our local teams.

Lake Wabukayne Park Stewardship Day
The Friends of Lake Wabukayne are hosting their annual park day on
Saturday September 22, 2018 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.
Please come out and join me and the Friends of Lake Wabukayne and learn about this jewel in the heart of Meadowvale. There will be a FREE BBQ and FREE popcorn and I am hoping to provide an educational train ride around the lake as well.

Re-imagining the Mall Open House
Over the past year, residents have shared their ideas, opinions and local knowledge to help guide the future evolution of five communities anchored by shopping malls as part of the Reimagining the Mall study. These include two in Ward 9 which are in Central Erin Mills and Meadowvale. The community involvement has been spectacular with many residents attending special sessions over the past year and contributing comments and ideas.
Staff are now close to unveiling the various design and development options for the malls and are holding an
Open House on September 25, 2018 in the Great Hall at City hall, 300 City Centre Dr from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. I look forward to seeing residents there and getting your further feedback on the presentations and ideas at that time. Click

Beat the heat this summer at City splash pads and enjoy some shade at a neighbourhood park.
There are 3 splash pads in Ward 9 at Union Park, Quenippenon Meadows and Lake Aquitaine Park.

I get many complaints about cyclists in the parks not sounding a horn or ringing their bells especially when coming up behind pedestrians. Last year new bike warning signs that I supplied were installed in our local trails around Lake Aquitaine. I hope that the signage will be a reminder to cyclists.
Under the Highway Traffic Act, all bikes must be equipped with a horn or bell and cyclists are required to sound them. I urge all riders to be courteous and alert pedestrians and other cyclists when you approach from behind.
Please follow these rules:
- Keep to the right of the trail
- Yield to pedestrians
- Advise when passing
- Avoid speeding
Please be careful and courteous and let people know you are approaching. This simple action can prevent injury.

This is a reminder that in hot summer weather, please be careful with your pets.
Do NOT leave pets in hot cars and do NOT walk pets during the hot part of the day. Hot pavement will burn their pads and the heat can cause heat exhaustion which can be fatal.

Small Arms Inspection Building Official Opening
On June 23rd I was proud to bring greetings as Acting Regional Chair for this very special official opening of the Small Arms Building. I congratulated the late Jim Tovey and Chair Diane LaPointe-Kay for their leadership on transforming this building which has historic significance into this creative and cultural hub for our city.
This project became a reality because of the dedication and passion of the Small Arms Society members and the community who had a vision to preserve not only what this building meant to Canadian history, but to the people who worked and contributed from the 1940s to the 1970s.

Plum Tree Park Public School Fun Fair
I had a great time at the Plum Tree Park Public School Fun Fair held on June 20th.
I had a perfect aim at the dunk tank hitting the target on my first throw and soaking the brave teacher on the wet seat. I also tried my hand at DJing and sampled some great Mexican food from one of the food trucks.

Eid Mubarak on Eid-al-Fitr
I joined my good friend Haroon Khan who always hosts an Eid Open House at his home.
Haroon throws open his doors to celebrate the end of Ramadan every year and all are welcomed by him and his wife Kulsoom.

44th Annual Mississauga Sports Dinner
It was such a pleasure to join the many athletes in our city at the 44th Annual Mississauga Sports Dinner on June 13th.
I had the opportunity to present awards to recognize Mississauga's athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers for their exceptional achievements and contributions to sport. I especially enjoyed presenting an award to the Meadowvale Minor Hockey Association past president Steve Johnston.

It is always an honour to congratulate residents who receive the City's Civic Awards. This year we held the ceremony at City Hall on June 12th. We honoured 100 volunteers and I was pleased to personally congratulate the recipients from Ward 9.
I also made sure I took a selfie with Councillor Matt Mahoney and Randy Persaud who received his certificate of recognition for his work in the community. Congratulations to Ward 9 residents:

Celebrating 30 years of service with the City
On June 12, I attended the Long Service lunch to honour city employees for their service to our City. I was recognized for completing 30 of years of service in 2017 as I worked for the city for before being elected as Councillor in 1981.

Angel Hugs Awareness Campaign
On June 9 members of Angel Hugs assembled in the lobby of the Meadowvale Community Centre to knit blankets and bring awareness to the organization.
Angel Hugs was founded by sisters Rosanne Locke and Melody Anderson and started with four volunteers twenty years ago. The organization knits blankets which are donated to bring comfort to those in need of a hug. It has now grown to over 100 volunteers!
Rosanne and Melody founded Angel Hugs through their desire to help abused children and has led to the establishment of a caring and
giving charity which knits blankets and donates them to hospitals and other organizations.
Every stitch is like giving a hug and the recipient of each blanket receives thousands of Angel Hugs.

On June 5th I joined QuadReal Property Group at the l
aunch of their new community garden at QuadReal's property at 2000 Argentia Rd.
QuadReal has partnered with Scotts Canada and the fresh food from the garden will be donated to the Mississauga Food Bank.

Ward 9 Annual Seniors' Fair
My 6th annual Seniors Fair took
place on June 1st at the
Meadowvale Community Centre.
It was bigger and better than ever,
with more than 40 agencies and organizations on hand to provide lots of information of interest to seniors.
Hundreds of our seniors browsed the displays and enjoyed coffee and tea courtesy of Meadowvale Tim Hortons. Tim Horton's also contributed gift cards for the first 100 attendees and as always I provided free treats including some good healthy food. Please click here to see all the photos from the fair.
I also arranged for 10 parking spots to be set aside at the community centre for a courtesy parking trial for people who have limited mobility but may not have the handicap parking permit. We will use the courtesy parking again for future events at the Community Centre.
