Greetings from Director Hui Greetings
In the wake of the  fatal balcony  collapse in Berkeley last week,  DBI,  along with the Fire  Department, want to remind property owners of all multi-unit apartment buildings with three or more units, to inspect their  balconies and decks for possible structural weaknesses. These vulnerabilities may have resulted over time from water-intrusion, dry rot and other possible degradation factors.  Since 2002, multi-unit property owners are required to submit, every five years, a signed affidavit by a licensed professional certifying that their balconies/decks are in working condition.

Decks provide enjoyment for residents throughout San Francisco. Property owners should conduct annual inspections and maintenance of their balconies and decks. Not doing so may result in injury, and in some cases, the tragic loss of life. Please ensure the safety of yourself, your family and residents by taking measures to assure your deck is safe for use.
