Hanover Stone Establishes Higher Education Practice; Names Ellen Shew Holland as Practice Leader
NEW YORK, June 28, 2018 - Hanover Stone Partners, a risk management services firm with expertise in a broad range of critical risk disciplines,  today announced it has established a national Higher Education practice and appointed Ellen Shew Holland, a prominent university risk management professional, as practice leader. 
 
"As private and public colleges and universities in all parts of the country wrestle with a wide range of strategic challenges, they also must navigate an increasingly complex web of risk issues, often with limited internal resources," said John J. Based in Dallas, TX, Ms. Shew Holland will lead a practice that will focus on providing a wide range of risk support services to private and public colleges and universities, including assistance with the design and implementation of strategic and enterprise risk management initiatives including resilience, as well as focused consulting on cyber-risk assessments bridging efforts in this area with IT professionals.
 
Previously, she was associate vice president and chief risk officer for Southern Methodist University (SMU), a position she held since 2014. In this role, she provided executive-level leadership for the strategic risk management and insurance program, resilience and crisis management, and the environmental health and safety programs.

Earlier, as chief risk officer for the Oregon University System (OUS), she created the first self-insured risk management program for the state's seven public universities in 2012, which subsequently became the Public Universities Risk Management & Insurance Trust (PURMIT).

Prior to that, she was director for Risk Management at University of Denver from 2000 to 2012. She began her risk career as the Loss Control/Database & Business Continuity Manager at Georgetown University.

Ms. Shew Holland is a distinguished risk manager, past president, board member and finance chair of the University Risk Management & Insurance Association (URMIA). Throughout her career, she has been active in RIMS, the risk management society and was a past chair of the annual conference programming committee. She is also a member of the Society for Corporate Compliance and Ethics.

Ms. Shew Holland earned a M.S. degree in finance from the University of Denver, a B.S. degree from Purdue University, and the Associate in Risk Management (ARM) professional designation. She is currently completing work to attain the Certified Information Security Systems Professional (CISSP) designation.
