Dear Neighbor,
Is it just me or does December always feel like the most bitter sweet month of the year? It's a month of both reflections of the past 11 months and rejuvenation as we get ready for a hopeful 2017. Every year has its share of failures and "wish we could haves" but also many prideful accomplishments that give us a renewed spirit to carry into the new calendar.
Along with the leaders, we continue to meet daily on a budget. I'm thankful for some of the major issues we tackled that made a positive impact for so many this year.
Our office distributed a record amount of school supplies to our public schools in the district.
We continued to affect change for adoptees in Illinois and across the country. The important topic of
Adoptee Birth Certificate Access took center stage in Chicago as I helped lead a discussion with my legislative colleagues from other states. As a result of that discussion, Pennsylvania joined Illinois and became the 21st
state in the country to allow adoptees access to their birth records.
We strengthened the
Humane Care for Animals Act, making it harder for pet owners to leave their pets outside in dangerous weather conditions without penalty. We hope the amended law spares many pets injury or even death from being kept out in the cold this winter.
We celebrated the one-year anniversary of our
Culinary and Hospitality Modernization Act (AKA "The Happy Hour Law") leveled the playing field for countless restaurant and bar owners here in Chicago. These are small business owners who can now market themselves fairly and tap into their full creativity that makes Chicago one of the top culinary destinations in the entire world. I know 2017 holds more hospitality improvement legislation.
We've had our share of hurdles in 2016 - some we were able to overcome and some that remain a challenge. The new year is an opportunity to find solutions to challenges that remain and I'm excited to work with you to bring even more positive change in 2017.
Happy Holidays,
Sara
