Speaker Bio: Congressman Jim McGovern was born in Worcester on November 20, 1959 and grew up around the corner from his current home on Burncoat Street. Growing up in Worcester taught Jim a lot about the value of hard work and giving back to his community. He attended Burncoat Elementary School and then Worcester Academy. By seventh grade, Jim knew he wanted to make a difference. He volunteered on the 1972 presidential campaign of Senator George McGovern-no relation-and held signs and knocked doors for the Senator's anti-war campaign. Jim attended The American University in Washington, D.C. where he earned both his bachelor's degree in History ('81) and his Master's Degree in Public Administration ('84). Jim was elected to the House of Representatives in 1996, and through his work in Washington and at home in Massachusetts, he has been a voice for the most vulnerable and a strong advocate for working families. One of Jim's greatest passions is ending hunger at home and abroad. He is the founder and co-chair of the House Hunger Caucus and Ranking Member on the House Subcommittee on Nutrition, where he advocates tirelessly for funding programs that help working families, children, and the elderly put food on the table when times are tough. He also authored the McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program to provide school-based meals for millions of children in some of the world's poorest countries.
In 2001, Jim was appointed to a seat on the powerful House Rules Committee, "the traffic cop of Congress" which sets the terms for debate on most legislation and he became Chair of this committee in January. Jim's work on behalf of Massachusetts and the nation has a proven record of success and he is proud to represent Massachusetts' Second Congressional District in Washington, D.C. Ribbon Cutting Held for Webster-based Physical/Occupational Therapy
At the new Webster PT/OT Ribbon Cutting, from left: Senator Ryan Fattman; Representative Joe McKenna; President and CEO Ed Moore; Karen Bussiere, PT, Rehabilitation Supervisor; Brenda Ebode, DPT, Director of Rehabilitation and Randy Becker, Vice Chair of the Harrington Board.
Harrington held a ribbon cutting on March 26 to officially unveil its new Physical and Occupational Therapy (PT/OT) clinic in Webster.
After more than a decade at its outpatient location on Cudworth Road, the healthcare system wanted to improve seamless care for patients and decided to move PT and OT services into its main campus at 340 Thompson Road.
Board members, legislative representatives and other community members got a tour of the 8,200 square-foot facility, which includes 13 private patient treatment areas and a newly-renovated gym. The space formerly housed the Transitional Care Unit (TCU), owned by Athena Health Care System.
"Over the past four years we have improved our clinical services, including to expanding on staff certifications and advanced training related to new program development including oncology rehab, sports rehab, lymphedema rehab, and other rehab specialties," said Director of Rehabilitation Brenda Ebode, DPT. "We continue to grow every year, and we promise to give patients the absolute best, high quality, compassionate care."
The Webster clinic has 12 therapists who work Monday through Saturday, offering a variety of specialized treatment, including Senator Ryan Fattman was in attendance, along with Representative Joe McKenna, who spoke about his personal experience receiving post-surgical rehab at the Webster clinic.
"My experience at Harrington's clinic after shoulder surgery was far better than the care I had received in Boston. Every therapist who worked with me knew me personally and gave me more attention while I was receiving treatment, not to mention that the therapy itself was more thorough and effective," McKenna said. "Maybe the best part was that it was local!" he said, citing he previously received pre-op physical therapy in Boston.
Patient appointments in the new space began on April 1.
The Webster location employs 12 highly-skilled therapists who have advanced certifications and/or training in sports, orthopedics, manual therapy, hand therapy, Lymphedema, cancer care, vestibular, pelvic floor, and neuromuscular rehab for all ages.
Over the past 12 months, the Webster clinic has seen over 14,800 patient visits. The new space allows for growth in patient visits and therapists.
Harrington has additional outpatient PT/OT clinics in Southbridge and Charlton.

Federated Church of Sturbridge & Fiskdale Invites Community
to Sing Hallelujah Chorus
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! If you're one of those singers who can't resist the urge to sing along when you hear the first bars of Handel's Hallelujah Chorus, you may just be interested in adding your voice to The Federated Church of Sturbridge and Fiskdale's choir when they perform the piece as a community sing on Easter Sunday!
Andrew Kosiba, director of Federated's small but enthusiastic church choir, says the Handel piece is so popular that he's hoping area singers will turn out to help raise the rafters in celebration of Easter. "We've put the word out to area singers, school choirs and anyone with an appreciation for Handel's iconic oratorio that they are welcome to join us in performing this beautiful piece of music. The more the merrier!"
Kosiba says the group will rehearse on Tuesday, April 16 at 6:30 p.m. in the church sanctuary at 8 Maple Street, Sturbridge and will perform the piece at the conclusion of the Easter service which begins at 9:30 a.m. For more information, please call the Church office at (508) 347-3915 or email

Verducci, Vice President of Corporate Partnerships, Worcester Red Sox. (middle) Maura C. McCaffrey (right) Keith E. Blanchette
Country Bank President and CEO, Paul F. Scully, announced the appointment of Maura C. McCaffrey, Former CEO, Health New England, and Keith E. Blanchette, Partner, Stolberg, Ebbeling and Blanchette, LLP to its Board of Trustees at its recent Annual Meeting held at the AC Marriott in Worcester.
The Bank also appointed five new Corporators to include: Nancy Crimmin, President of Becker College, Cherylann Gengel, Co-founder of Be Like Brit, Michael Myers, President of the Worcester Railers, Peter Dawson, Partner, Mirick O'Connell and Mark Donahue, Partner, Fletcher Tilton.
At the meeting, Country Bank reported its 2018 earnings resulted in another highly successful year with record-breaking profits. Net income was reported at $12,853,000 with total assets increasing to $1,624,000,000. Deposit balances increased to $1,083,182,000 and total loans increased from the prior year to $1,240,421,000. Capital was reported at 14.06% maintaining the Bank's esteemed position as one of the higher capitalized banks in the Commonwealth.
"While each of our markets offer a unique value proposition, we are making strategic decisions to focus our efforts on the areas that will provide us with the most growth opportunities," stated Scully. "In 2018, Worcester business leaders provided Country Bank the opportunity to participate in the financing of several notable projects in the city to include the $59,500,000 recapitalization of 100 Front Street known as Mercantile Center and the $16,000,000 financing of Harding Green in Kelly Square."
As part of its ongoing Worcester expansion, the Bank partnered with the Worcester Red Sox as one of the team's twenty-one founding partners in anticipation of its move to Worcester in 2021. The meeting's keynote address included a video of the site of Polar Park narrated by Worcester Red Sox President, Dr. Charles Steinberg along with remarks regarding the team's decision to relocate to Worcester and Country Bank's partnership by team members Rob Crain, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Sales and Jack Verducci, Vice President of Corporate Partnerships from the Worcester Red Sox.
In his remarks, Scully noted the Bank's founding principles and core values of integrity, service, teamwork, excellence and prosperity continue to serve as the foundation for its success and community involvement one hundred sixty-nine years since its founding in 1850. "Back then, the founding fathers of Country Bank envisioned the role of the community bank to assist hard-working residents in providing for their families, growing their businesses, achieving their financial dreams and enriching the local community". Those principles, noted Scully, resulted in the Bank providing over $1,000,000 of charitable donations and community support in 2018.

Independent Massachusetts Hospital Systems Launch Value Alliance
South Weymouth, Mass., April 11, 2019 - A coalition of ten independent Massachusetts health systems, including 14 community hospitals, have formed the Massachusetts Value Alliance (MVA) to enhance their efforts in delivering high quality, patient-centered and cost-effective care to their communities.
The member hospitals of the MVA collectively represent the largest collaboration of independent healthcare providers in the Commonwealth, with a combined $3.1 billion in total revenue. The 10-member collaborative spans the breadth of Massachusetts geographically, and serves approximately 2 million people in their combined market areas. This alliance is unique in Massachusetts as the only collaboration of independent health care systems.
The MVA was founded in 2016 by Emerson Hospital, Sturdy Memorial Hospital and South Shore Health. Membership has continued to grow and now also includes Berkshire Health Systems, Harrington HealthCare System, Heywood Healthcare, Holyoke Medical Center, Lawrence General Hospital, Signature Healthcare and Southcoast Health. Each MVA member shares a commitment to delivering coordinated, high quality care while focusing on cost-efficient operations.
"Community hospitals play a vital role in providing healthcare to our communities. Unfortunately, it has become increasingly difficult for smaller hospitals and health systems to leverage vendors to provide aggressive and competitive pricing. Through the Alliance, Harrington has been able to achieve significant savings in several areas including IT, purchased services and equipment," said Ed Moore, President and CEO of Harrington HealthCare System. "Beyond the financial benefits, it has created a partnership between similar organizations which allows us to collectively evaluate options and ensure we are making the best decisions for our communities.
The specific goals of the MVA include:
- The development of group purchasing and shared service arrangements;
- Identification and sharing of best practices to enhance each organization's ability to affect and lower the total cost of care while enhancing the quality of care; and
- Support for the development of population health management and care coordination skillsets and capabilities.
To date, the MVA has worked to facilitate cost savings for its member organizations through group purchasing of services, including reference lab services and employee health benefits. Other initiatives are underway, including several MVA hospitals working together on the selection and implementation of a common electronic medical record platform.
"We are very pleased with the progress the MVA has made in a short period of time," said Gene Green, MD, MBA, president of the MVA Board of Trustees and President & CEO of South Shore Health. "Our membership is strong, 14 community hospitals representing 10 health systems. We are committed to working together to lower costs and enhance efficiencies, so we can continue what we do best: deliver high quality care to the people we serve."
Over time, a number of the MVA member organizations expect to work together to enhance their organizations' population health management initiatives. The MVA will provide opportunity to exchange best practices among its members with the goal of reducing health care costs to the consumer/purchaser, improving quality and enhancing patient experience. "The benefits are significant," said Dr. Green. "Through collaboration, community hospitals can secure new equipment and upgrades, achieve efficiencies of scale and gain access to value-added services, all of which is difficult to attain as a single hospital. Together, we are able to accomplish a great deal more for our hospitals, our patients and our communities."
The MVA is governed by a board of directors and operates on a shared decision-making platform. MVA member health systems remain competitive and independent, each maintaining their strong community focus. The alliance is a unique partnership of like-minded health systems which, in addition to providing economies of scale to improve efficiency and control cost, is bringing innovation to the communities served.

Patriots' Day
Monday, April 15, 2019
Old Sturbridge Village
Patriots' Day observances at Old Sturbridge will resound with the peal of bells, the stirring beat of drums and the thrilling call of the fife, as the Sturbridge Militia musters in the countryside on Monday, April 15. Special programs and activities throughout the day will invite visitors to experience the sights and sounds of our colonial ancestors as the Revolutionary War began.
Through military drills and maneuvers, musket demonstrations, and more, the members for the Sturbridge Militia will bring to life the stories of the men who hastened from their farms, homes, and families to march to the aid of those already engaged in the initial battle of the American Revolution against King George's tyranny. Young visitors are invited to take part, wielding muskets and swords, learning to drill and march in the manner of the boys of '76. "Muskets" are provided for this ever-popular exercise in leadership, bravery, and derring-do for small patriots. Witness the making of real musket balls in the Blacksmith Shop. Also joining us for the day will be the martial band and the visiting surgeon from the USS Constitution. Cannon demonstrations will be held in the morning and afternoon.
Not all Americans fought against the British crown; many sided with and pledged their allegiance to the king. They called themselves loyalists; to them, our patriots were rebels. On Monday meet one of those loyalists; he will tell you of his side of the conflict, ofttimes at the cost of hardship and heartache to him and his family.
How did the news of Lexington and Concord affect a small New England community? For a day of history, entertainment and discovery, visit Old Sturbridge Village on April 15 as we celebrate our nation's beginning and continuing perseverance, in war and in peace.
Please note that certain activities, like cannon demonstrations, are weather dependent.
The Village is open 9:30 am - 4:00 pm on this day.
Family Farm Fest
April 13, 14, 20, and 21, 2019
Old Sturbridge Village invites young and old to celebrate spring with the arrival of baby animals and the preparation of our planting fields. Meet the Village's cuddly, heritage breed newborns up-close and experience first-hand the responsibilities of raising animals on a farm in 1830. At the Freeman Farm, families will learn about 19th-century agriculture practices and tools, as well as learn how they are applicable to today's farmers and even backyard gardeners. Kids will even have a chance to try their hand at seasonal chores!
Visit with a variety of animals including cattle, lambs, and chicks. Enjoy a wagon ride around the countryside, and learn more about farming and gardening. Meet guest ox teamsters from around New England.
During Family Farm Fest, guests will thrill at "meeting" Laura Ingalls Wilder, of the "Little House" series, as portrayed by historian Melanie Stringer. Stringer provides research-based, factual information about Wilder, her husband Almanzo, daughter Rose, and their family and friends. Her in-character answers to questions from the audience will reflect Ms. Wilder's known activities, tastes, opinions, experiences, beliefs, and manners. See more at
