Meet Some Next Step Participants
The American Stroke Foundation Next Step Program is a wellness program to help people who have had a stroke continue to improve and regain independence in daily living skills. Here are some stories of participants and the gains they have made.

Meet Jason
by Jessica Knaack, OT Student

Jason is 32 years old and grew up in Blue Springs, MO. He is an avid sports fan! He attended St. Joe College where he earned an undergraduate degree in criminal justice and played on their football team. Following college, Jason moved to Orlando, FL and pursued a career as an umpire for professional baseball. On his days off, he spent most of his time at the beach! One morning when we was 30 years old, he realized that he could not lift his arms, articulate or recall the words he wanted to say, and his balance appeared affected. Jason wondered if he was experiencing symptoms of a stroke. Upon returning home to MO to visit family, he realized he needed to see a doctor. The doctor stated that he was in fact experiencing stroke-like symptoms. Currently, Jason's support system includes his dad, Mark, and younger brother Jeff. Despite the side effects of his current condition, Jason still enjoys watching TV (mostly sports), playing card games, visiting/talking with friends, collecting baseball cards, listening to rock and roll music, and spending time with his dog, Izzy. Jason's top three favorite parts of attending and participating in the American Stroke Foundation (ASF) include; the friendships, having something to participate in every day, and improving his own skills and overall health. He would like for those at ASF to know that he always strives to accentuate the positive, is extremely optimistic, and is here to give support, as well as receive it. He states that his condition has taught him not to take the small things in life for granted. In addition, by remaining positive, and not focusing on the negative, he will relearn how to do the things he wants/needs to do and improve each day. Jason's future plans/aspirations include his desire to reclaim his life and find success in whatever he sets his mind to.

Meet Linda
by Melissa Naylor, OT Student

Linda is a very sweet and honest person with a great sense of humor. She enjoys spending time working in her yard and with her family and friends. Linda has two supportive daughters that live close to her and assist her when possible. Linda has been a participant at the American Stroke Foundation (ASF) for 2 years after experiencing a stroke in 2016. Prior to experiencing her stroke Linda worked a variety of jobs and worked as a stylist.

Linda regularly attends ASF to exercise, maintain her health, and for social support. The activities Linda enjoys most at ASF are creative conversations and aquatics. The creative conversations programming provides group opportunities for conversation and activities that address language barriers that some stroke survivors face. The aquatics program addresses balance, strength, and range of motion while participants are exercising in the water. Linda says she enjoys these two programs because they provide her with opportunities to practice conversational skills and maintain her health. Linda believes ASF has greatly impacted her outlook on life and has provided her with additional hope moving forward. Linda's advice to other stroke survivors is to never give up, stay positive, and don't be afraid to ask for help.

Meet David
by Jodi Hellebusch, OT Student

David grew up in Sedalia, Missouri, but has lived in various regions throughout the U.S. After David experienced his second stroke he moved to Kansas City from Stillwater, Oklahoma in August of 2016. David's biggest feat after his stroke was learning to walk again, and he decided to attend the American Stroke Foundation (ASF) to continue to improve his walking and get the physical exercise he needed. He has enjoyed attending ASF at the Blue Springs location since September 2017 because he is able to maintain his physical exercise and socialize with friends while engaging in heated games of dominoes.

When he is not attending ASF, David enjoys keeping up with weather safety and emergency maintenance education. David has a rich background in firefighting, as he began training after high school, became an instructor at Oklahoma State where he attended college, and gained the title of Fire Chief for Grove, Oklahoma Fire Department. David took great pride in seeing his firefighter classes achieve and graduate to become rescue professionals. He went on to serve at many other fire departments throughout the U.S. David served as a volunteer photographer for the Stillwater Fire Department, and his passion for photography continues to grow; he states that if he has a camera in hand, he can always find something interesting to snap a quick photo.

David has learned in life that it is important to be independent, as he had to be on his own at a young age, but he will always appreciate having "man's best friend" around. He trained his dog, Sophie, as an Advanced Canine Good Citizen. David would like to continue to work with dogs and is going to pursue a volunteer position at Great Plains SPCA Pet Adoption Center. David is known as always being loved by Mantle, Blue Springs ASF's favorite canine, as he is known to keep yummy dog treats in his pockets!
