Pentecost

Weekly Chimes

Come, Holy Spirit, Come! Sunday is the Feast of Pentecost...the day for the Holy Spirit to enter the Upper Room and anoint the disciples with gifts and power to do God's work. Sometimes known as the "Birthday of the Christian Church" it is one of the three biggest days in the Church year, along with Easter and Christmas. The liturgical color of the day is RED, symbolizing the fire of the Holy Spirit and the blood of the martyrs. We celebrate big time at Old Donation, with balloons, extra acolytes, and people reading the Gospel in as many different languages as we can find represented in our congregation. This imitates the day of Pentecost, when the gospel was proclaimed so that everyone heard it in their own language (Acts 2:5-6). If you can read and voice a foreign language, send a note to Gretchen and she will get you the gospel reading for the day to read. Lastly, you should WEAR RED for Sunday... It is a good day for your Old Donation red T-shirts... (but come regardless).

In addition, we will have a special treat because our Pentecost coincides with the Jewish Feast of Pentecost (Shavout). So our friend, Rabbi Israel Zoberman will visit. He and I will do a 'tag-team' sermon at the 8:00, 9:15 and 10:30 services in the Church. Ashley will preach in the Gathering. The rabbi and I enjoy some lively discussions and we will have one for your benefit as we discuss the similarities and unique aspects of Pentecost for Judaism and Christianity.

If you are new to our community, we also have one of our periodic newcomer suppers on Sunday evening. If you would like to attend (5:30-8:00), let Judy Kuhns or the office know. You don't have to do anything except enjoy some hospitality, supper, and discussion about life at ODEC.

Tonight our discussion is on the Book of ACTS. We will look at how its depiction of the Holy Spirit differs from some of the other New Testament writings and how it defines essential Christian community. Come and enjoy!

Summer Worship
Our Worship Commission met last week. You were very responsive and helpful in the survey regarding a Summer Sunday schedule for worship services. There was a majority of you from each and every service who preferred we move to a schedule of: 8:00am RITE I; 10:00am RITE II in the Church, and the Gathering in the Parish Hall; and 5:00pm Sundays@5 informal Eucharist. We will use that schedule for the Summer, beginning June 10, and ending on September 2. September 9 we return to the normal schedule. We are hopeful that the crowd who typically attends 9:15am will move to 8:00am or 10:00am and the 10:30am services are all comfortable with a summer schedule 30 minutes earlier. OR show up at 5:00pm in your T-shirts, shorts and sandals! More explanation of Summer plans will follow in the Bell Ringer in early June. ~Bob+
