May 2018 - In This Issue:
Welcome Shelly Shafer Cates and Marla Hatchel

Please join us in welcoming Shelly Shafer Cates, our new Guest Services Senior Manager.  She will lead our House programs at both Limestone and Riley managing guest relations and communications. Shelly's experience includes operations management, volunteer management, event planning and customer relations. Shelly and her son, Cash, started volunteering at the House last Fall, helping with family  activities and events.

We are also welcoming Marla Hatchel, Operations Associate  to the House.  She  will be working part-time with the finance and operation's teams. Marla previously worked for Downtown Indy and volunteers with the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana.

Please make sure to introduce yourself!

"We enjoy it all, it's very rewarding. It's the people and the families that you help. When they come in here, their minds aren't on this House. Their minds are on their babies or children. Our job is to ease their way as they come in here and try to make it just a little bit easier. It doesn't take away the worry but it's one less frustration that they have to deal with." - Tom & Jeri Shipp, Guest Services Volunteers at Riley
"The beauty of the coffee cart is the joy and appreciation we see from families. They are facing a myriad of challenges and the simple offer of a cup of coffee often brings a smile and profuse thanks. We are everyone's "favorite" person on Tuesday mornings!" - Deb St. Pierre, Coffee Cart Volunteer at Riley

"This [serving a meal] is a perfect opportunity to meet families and Riley kids one-on-one. We're all here to make a difference. We're all a part of the Indiana University Dance Marathon to make a difference and this is just another way we can do that." - IU Dance Marathon, Meal Group
"The kids or family members come down [to visit with Mac] and it just gives them some normalcy. A lot of them have dogs at home and haven't seen them for a while so Mac brings a little bit of that cuddliness and warmth." - Heidi Connors, Chief Cheer Officer Handler

Welcome Back and Goodbye

We would like to welcome back everyone returning to the House after their vacations and trips. We appreciate you bringing nice weather and sunshine back with you!

As summer approaches and we say "hello" again to many familiar faces - we also have to say "goodbye" to our departing college students.

Congratulations to all of our graduates who will be leaving the House to pursue their careers. Thanks for all of your support and we wish you the best of luck! For those that are just returning home for the summer, we hope you have a relaxing break and look forward to your return in the Fall!
Join Us Under The Stars For This Year's Volunteer Celebration

We are excited to host this year's volunteer celebration on  Friday, August 10 at Symphony on the Prairie at Conner Prairie beginning at 6 p.m. All registered volunteers will receive an invitation and are welcome to bring a guest. We have reserved the Bayt Pavilion where we will have dinner and a short program.  Then, join us for a delightful evening under the stars as we enjoy "Classical Mystery Tour: Music of the Beatles." The night includes more than two dozen Beatles tunes performed exactly as they were originally recorded, from the early Beatles on through "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" and "Let It Be." The second half of the concert features a tribute to The White Album, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

More details will be announced in the months to come but please mark your calendars now!

What's New?

Volunteers Needed
  • We need additional volunteers at our Riley location mainly during the lunch hour (12-3 p.m.). You will be assisting with the check-in process, setting up lunch and light clean up after. Meals are already prepared, no cooking necessary. For more information, please contact Mary Friend, [email protected].
  • GOOOOOOAL! We have been invited to participate in an exciting 3V3 Soccer Tournament Fundraiser on Saturday, June 23rd in McCordsville, IN. We will need volunteers to assist with concessions and side games that will help us raise additional funds. The event will be all day (8 a.m. - 5 p.m.) but shifts will be available. Please keep an eye out for additional information as it becomes available or email Manpreet Dhillon, Marketing & Development Associate, at [email protected] for more information or to sign-up to volunteer.

Riley Location Updates

Guests can stay at RMH at Riley up to seven days, and longer if needed. Arrangements can be made to stay longer than seven days by contacting the Manager on Duty. RMH at Riley House rules still apply -- no one under the age of 18 can stay, and only one or two adults per room. Guests can be referred by social workers, self-referral or Manager on Duty. Let's work together between Limestone and RMH at Riley to provide a comfortable bed to sleep for as many families as we can!

Birthday Boxes

Everyone likes to celebrate their birthday! We now have birthday boxes, containing party favors and goodies for approximately eight people, available to our families upon request. Anyone in the front office can hand them out.

Welcome to the Future!

Have you noticed the white, futuristic looking device sitting in the front office recently? This device is our new cash register. Our old one will be obsolete in June because it cannot read credit card chips. We still have a few logistics to sort out, so the change will not be made immediately. Once we transition to the new register, we will post the details in the "Need to Know" binder.
Yoga Anyone?

Houseguests, volunteers and staff are welcome to join our complimentary yoga classes on the first Monday of each month from 7-8 p.m. The next class will be held on Monday, June 4 so please join us! Thank you Kelly Alford from The Yoga Studio for your generous donation.
Look Who Was Caught Rolling Out The Red Carpet

Rhonda Hainer, Guest Services Manager at the RMH at Riley, caught Nancy Iles and Cristina Pretorius, Guest Services Volunteers at the RMH at Riley, demonstrating Cooperation, Communication and Teamwork.

Rhonda wrote: "Nancy and Cristina worked together as a team, risking frostbite, to take inventory and deep clean the commercial freezer at the RMH at Riley. They performed this chore eagerly and with a smile on their faces."

Thank you, Nancy and Cristina. We appreciate your friendliness and compassion!

Congratulations! Your Crew Carwash pass is in the mail.

Remember, if you catch a volunteer rolling out the red carpet and providing an excellent family experience, please submit a nomination using the form below. Printed copies of this form are also available in the front office at both Limestone and Riley. Each month, all nominations are eligible for a random drawing for a Crew Carwash pass.

MISSION MOMENT
"Thank you very much for a room at the Ronald McDonald House. It was such a blessing to not have to drive 2 hours each way for my 13-year-old son's daily radiation for 3 weeks. We were able to relax after the stressful days."

Much love to you,
The Yocums
