More Performers Announced!
There are but a handful of reggae artists still making music from the ground-breaking days of the Trench Town sound of the sixties and seventies, as spearheaded by Bob Marley and Peter Tosh. With that in mind Salmon Arm ROOTSandBLUES is pleased to announce that Third World, one of the Kingston, Jamaica-based groups that took reggae to the world with classics like Now That We've Found Love, 1865 (96 Degrees in the Shade), Cool Meditation and Try Jah Love, will be performing in Salmon Arm as part of the group's 45th anniversary tour.
Led by founding members Stephen "Cat" Coore on guitar and Richard Daley on bass, Third World's pulsating, poly-rhythmic and hook-laden sound was part of the foundation of the famous Island Record label as the band took the world by storm while touring with Bob Marley. By the eighties, Third World was touring Canada, playing sold-out auditoriums to as many as 4,000 fans and drawing on material from albums like Rock The World, Journey To Addis and You've Got The Power. But the creative spark didn't stop there as Third World has recorded five albums in this new millennium, including what is arguably their strongest outing in twenty-five years, the 2014 release Under The Magic Sun.
Third World is more than just one of the top Reggae bands of all time; it is an institution that stands for producing and performing music that, while holding firm to the cultural and ancestral roots of its members, still pushes forward the cutting edge of music worldwide. It is an institution whose themes are positive, progressive and internationally relevant.
ROOTSandBLUES is also pleased to announce that two exceptionally talented B.C. artists have also been added to the festival roster for the weekend of August 15th thru 18th.
Ronnie Dean Harris aka Ostwelve, is a Stō:lo/St'át'imc/Nlaka'pamux multimedia artist based in Langley, BC. He got his start with professional graphic design at the age of 14 and also began co-hosting the "When Spirits Whisper" radio show on Vancouver's CO-OP Radio.
This hip-hop artist, songwriter and producer has also worked on a number of media projects, including APTN/Showcase dramatic series "Moccasin Flats" for two seasons as a performer and a lead character, and in the subsequent film project "Moccasin Flats: Redemption".
Ronnie has also been very active in creating and facilitating workshop programs for youth in media arts and hip-hop. Currently he is working as the Program Director for "Reframing Relations" with the Community Arts Council of Vancouver, delivering programming for indigenous and non-indigenous artists to interface with students and youth in schools and communities around the concept of reconciliation.
Like Ronnie, Tonye Aganaba is also a member of the B.C. World Music Collective, as well as a solo artist. Tonye is a singer-songwriter born in London ,England to a Nigerian father and a Zimbabwean mother. She moved to Canada in her teens and started a career in music at 17. Her style can be described as Soul/ Neo-Folk/ Hiphop. She has been likened to folks like Lauryn Hill and Ani Difranco. She is a Much More Music Video Award recipient, social justice advocate and the kind of singer/performer that turns heads wherever she plays.
In 2015 her trajectory was interrupted by a Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis. Her career was put on hold at a time when she had signed a label and management deal, completed a record and was about to embark on a worldwide tour. Shortly after receiving the diagnosis she was also in a car accident in which she fractured her spine in 6 different places. Her dreams and plans were waylaid as she was bedridden and isolated for months.
For the past 4 years Tonye has been working on healing and finding herself again. A new Phoenix-like person has emerged, and she now calls MS the best thing that ever happened to her, offering her a new lease on life and a new perspective. She has a new career trajectory that involves connecting more deeply with her audience and creating a new community for herself. She's not only interested in taking her music to traditional venues but also into schools, community centers, and hospitals where her music can heal and make a difference.
Tanye will be performing with her band in stand-alone concerts and collaborating with fellow ROOTSandBLUES artists at the 27th edition of the Salmon Arm Festival.
New Spring Concert Announced!
ROOTSandBLUES and The Salmon Arm Folk Music Society are pleased to announce that MonkeyJunk frontman Steve Marriner will be performing solo at the Salmon Arm Legion on Wednesday, June 5.
On a hiatus from the award-winning MonkeyJunk, the multi-instrumentalist, singer/songwriter is currently on a national tour playing harmonica and singing back-ups for Colin James.
Last week Stony Plain Records released Marriner's latest project, a duo effort with his onetime mentor Harry Manx. Titled Manx-Marriner Mainline ,the album features songs by both artists and interpretations of classic blues tunes. The album has already received a four-star review in the prestigious jazz/blues publication Downbeat.
The concert stop in Salmon Arm is part of a two-week tour that cuts through Alberta and B.C. with Marriner playing guitar and harmonica.
Marriner hosted what was arguably the hottest blues workshop in the history of ROOTSandBLUES last August when he hosted an amazing set featuring his fellow MonkeyJunk bandmates, Fleetwood Mac's Rick Vito, Colin James. and Big Dave McLean.
