Parents would love to protect their children from everything. But life isn’t like that. Difficult
times happen and kids need to be resilient to meet challenges. So how do we foster resilience?
- Encourage your child to see set-backs as temporary. Problem-solve together to come up with a way to solve the set-back next time.
- Give lots of support – this is different than doing things for your child.
- Allow your child to experience difficult emotions. It’s fine for kids to cry, to feel angry or frustrated. The important thing is to connect and talk about how well (or poorly) your child handled their feelings.
Teaching kids that that life can be difficult but that they are capable of meeting these
challenges will go a long way toward building resilience and success in life.
