Association Updates
We Want to Serve You Better 
RSPA launched its inaugural member loyalty survey in June, 2018. As part of the association's continuous improvement strategy, we have opened the follow-up survey. The survey should take no more than 5 minutes. Your input will help the RSPA to continue efforts to enhance the value of our membership benefits and to better serve our members.

2019 RSPA Hall of Fame Nominations are OPEN 
RSPA annually inducts one individual into the Retail Technology Industry Hall of Fame. Hall of Fame inductees are individuals who have made exemplary contributions to the Retail Technology Industry over the course of their entire career.

If you know an individual that has conducted their career with the highest level of professionalism and made a significant contribution to our industry, nominate them today! We want to induct and celebrate them at our RetailNOW 2019 event in San Antonio, TX.
The W2W Leader of the Year Award 
This award was created to recognize a woman in the Retail Technology Industry who is determined to reshape the industry and create a smarter and more inclusive future. 2019 Canadian Networking Event
Another tremendous networking event was held in Vancouver on April 1st! Michael Leblanc from the Retail Council of Canada presented the state of the industry and new trends happening in the retail market. It is always great to network and catch up with our West coast friends.

Let's Solve Gender Bias Before AI Makes It Worse 
Innovation, regardless of intent, brings disruptive change to society. Artificial intelligence and machine learning innovations are at the forefront of this Transformative Age. Intended to improve the way we work, shop, travel, enforce laws, and even how we communicate, AI technology is becoming more ingrained in our daily lives.

Artificial intelligence has the potential to create positive change in our society, but understanding the risks associated with the development and use of the technology as innovation continues is imperative. In this article, Julie Teigland explains how the deep learning algorithms behind most AI technologies may unintentionally create pervasive gender bias and how to limit the associated risks.

Security Tip
Strong network segmentation is a foundational security control. Using firewalls to segment systems with different risk levels can enable businesses to better protect sensitive systems while allowing more flexibility on less secure systems. Some devices should always be segmented from the POS system such as guest wireless, security camera, and consumer electronics. Start with default deny-all rules between segments and then only allow traffic to pass through that is necessary for business operations.

Competing for Employees
It is well understood that resellers compete with each other, and often their supplier, for the sale of equipment, service, support, and supplies. As competitors it is illegal to enter an agreement with a competitor to fix or maintain prices, divide territories, or allocate customers. RSPA has strict antirust compliance rules and emphasizes them regularly. These restrictions are not limited to the point-of-sale systems market place, but extend to competition for employees as well. Read More...
