From Area Superintendent Cliff Jones about the search for a new Centennial Principal:
"Filling the position of principal at Centennial HS with the best candidate is a top priority for the Northeast Learning Community Leadership Team.  The first step in the process of finding the best principal candidate for Centennial is to build a unique profile.  The purpose of the school profile is to outline the unique characteristics of the school and to highlight the most important leadership skills that your future principal will need to be successful.   We will use this valuable information to select the most qualified candidates to proceed to a school level interview. Candidates will be interviewed on the competencies identified as the most critical to meet the unique needs of your school. A link to the survey is below, and it will stay open through Friday May 18th."

Cameron Bell Wins Prestigious 4-Year Scholarship to GA Tech

Centennial Senior Cameron Bell has been named as a recipient of a full-ride Stamps President's Scholarship, the top undergraduate scholarship offered at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

According to GT, this is one of the most remarkable achievements one can make at Georgia Tech. Stamps President's Scholars (SPS) represent less than 1 percent of the freshman applicant pool.

Out of more than 17, 000 early applicants at Tech, a  total of 40 Stamps President's Scholars have been named from that group (20 from Georgia, 20 out of state).

Cameron is the 4th Centennial Knight to win the Stamps President's Scholarship at GA Tech in the past 4 years!

You can find more details through this link:

Biology Research Students Wanted! honeybee.jpg
Mr. Kuhn is currently looking for students interested in biology experimentation for a long term, student-led project.
Do you like honeybees? How about DNA? How about infectious bacteria that control sex of the host?
I am looking for 10-14 students who are interested in a student led research project. You will learn how to extract DNA from the bees and amplify it using PCR and analyze it for evidence of bacterial infection. Bees have been donated by the Metro Atlanta Beekeepers Association and were deceased naturally.
This would also be a great opportunity for kids who are interested in the biological sciences in college or Governor's Honors in science.
You DO NOT have to be in advanced science. You should have an interest in biology and be willing to commit a small amount of time to the project. There will be a training day before school starts in August and then monthly time commitments during the year.
So, BUZZ on over to room J-106 and learn more or email Mr. Kuhn at   kuhn@fultonschools.org.
Centennial School Governance Council Election Results and Funding

SGC would like to congratulate parent representative Tonya Smith-Dixon and teacher representative Jeb Stewart for their elections to Centennial's Governance Council!  They will begin their 2-year terms in July 2018.   We appreciate their desire to serve and look forward to their participation on our council this fall!

In addition, as part of the Fulton County Schools Charter System, Centennial received charter system funds in the amount of $80,000 for distribution within our school content areas and programs. The distribution of these funds are tied to the objectives set in our Strategic Plan and are intended to supplement areas of need as well as give our students the access to new and innovative learning tools.  Our teachers were given the opportunity to request items within their subject areas that they believe will improve the experience for our students.  The SGC received and approved the following Flexible Spending Proposals and we are excited for their implementation next school year!
  • AV Tech - New Camera and Equipment
  • Biology - Lab and Dissection Equipment
  • CBI - School Store Start Up Supplies
  • Environmental Science - Greenhouse and Gardening Equipment
  • Fine Arts - Marching Band Tower, lighting and sound enhancements in the auditorium, projection system upgrade, Music Technology equipment upgrade, Visual Arts display system

GRADUATION TIMELINE
When?  Where?  What do I wear?

GRADUATION REHEARSAL
Where: Verizon Amphitheater
When: Friday, May 18th 1-3pm    Students should arrive no later than 12:30 to make sure we can start at 1 and be finished on time
Students are to park in LOT C on 11450 Maxwell Road
What:   This is a full rehearsal with a practice line and processional. Students should come dressed to be outside in the heat, but clothing should also be school appropriate.

After rehearsal is over, we will distribute the following
-        Tickets (All students will receive 12)
  • If students need additional tickets, they will be asked to wait in their seats.   I will distribute them in an orderly fashion until they are all given out. Last year, everyone waiting got 6 extra, I wouldn't plan on more than 6 as this class is larger than last years. If parents need more than 18 tickets they will need to have their student ask other students for extras.
-        Tassels if a student didn't receive one
-        Honor Cords and Honor Pins - this is only for students with a predesignated honor grad status - this is decided by the county based on cumulative weighted average of 88% or higher.
-        Congratulations envelopes filled with letters and cards from family
-        FINAL SENIOR SNACK - this will take place in lieu of the senior luncheon. In the past seniors were not attending the luncheon and were not receiving their packets. Also, because of AP testing going on that morning, we did not want to exclude any of the seniors from receiving their envelopes and being left out of a lunch event. Because graduation is coinciding with AP testing this year we want to make all the options are fair for everyone. Instead, we will be handing out sodas, snacks and other treats to them after everything is finished.   This way, every senior is guaranteed to receive their congratulations envelope and no one has to track them down.

GRADUATION DAY
Where: Verizon Amphitheater
When: Monday May 21st 7pm-9pm - Students should arrive no later than 6:15 fully dressed in all regalia as well as their cap and gown. Students are to park in lot C on 11450 Maxwell Road
What: Students should follow the graduation dress code that was sent home to parents and posted online:
What to Wear**
Boys:   dark slacks (long pants), white collared shirt, tie, and dark dress shoes
Girls:     nice dress with dress shoes or sandals
**No hats, large jewelry, or sunglasses

-        Parents are to Park in Lot A - The lots open at 5pm       Please advise families that the lots do back up and it can take a while to get parked and seated. There will be large signs and attendants at each lot to assist in directing traffic.
  • There is preferential parking for handicapped guests and there is golf cart service for elderly and handicapped guests as well.   *There is no preferential seating for guests unless they are in a wheel chair*

-        GATES OPEN AT 6PM .   Verizon staff will be on hand and will keep the gates locked until 6pm. NO EXCEPTIONS. They will not open the gates for anyone. If a senior arrives with their family they must walk around to the rear of the stadium
  • EVERY PERSON must have a ticket! That includes small children. This is a fire code issue. We cannot have more bodies than is legally allowed. Everyone must be counted and present a ticket at the gate.
  -        NO BALLOONS !   Verizon will turn you away with balloons and most times they will not even let you get out of the parking lot with them.   Balloons are not allowed in any fashion into the arena

-        Graduation will begin PROMTLY at 7pm.   Last year we had many, many families who were still walking in and getting seated as the graduates entered the venue. Families who are late will be held to the outside of the seating area until all seniors have been seated.   We will not hold the start of the ceremony.
  • At the end of the ceremony students will process to the back of the stadium where they will receive their diploma. Diplomas are not handed out on stage.

-        Photos :   Legacy Photos will have 2 Photographers on hand: 1 to take a close up of the student as they receive their diploma, and 1 at the stairs to take a posed shot before they exit the stage.   The graduate and family seating area is about 10 feet BELOW the stage and roped off as parents are not allowed in that area during the ceremony.   They will also take photos during the ceremony itself of all the speakers, singers, and the cap toss at the end. Photos will be available to purchase through Legacy sometime after the ceremony. We will have that information posted on the school website as soon as we receive a link to order from Legacy.

-        Once graduation is over there will be a 30 minute window for families to take photos. After 30 minutes, Verizon staff will begin asking people to make their way out. Graduation usually takes just under 2 hours, we hope to keep with this.

Centennial  Seniors are "Cool "

The final Senior Treats will be on Friday, May 18th at Graduation Rehearsal with a special visit from the Kona Ice Truck!  Thanks to all the Senior Treat volunteers who helped make our Seniors feel special!
SENIOR YARD SIGNS
Display with Pride that You have a Graduating SENIOR!

Show your Senior Knight Pride by displaying a Centennial Graduate Sign in your yard.  Yard signs cost $20. They are at the front office at school and available for purchase until Friday, May 18 or until supplies last.
GRADUATION CORDS
Club sponsors are responsible for graduation cords.  Have your student check with their club sponsor about whether they have graduation cords and what the cost is.  Many clubs raise money for their club by selling graduation cords.  Graduation cords are worn around a student's neck over their graduation gown for the graduation ceremony.

Honors cords and pins will be distributed at the Graduation Rehearsal.
Clubs & Activities
HOPE Club Collecting New and Gently Used Materials for Honors and AP Courses
Do you or someone you know have a pile of unused study guides at home from that AP course last semester? Did you buy the summer reading book for a class and now would like to send it to a good home? The HOPE club is currently collecting gently used materials to create a library of resources for students who might need them. We've all bought materials that we didn't end up using or we used but didn't write all the answers in the book. Please send these items to school with your students to drop off for Ms. Escalera-Smith in the Counseling Office or you can bring them into the Main Office. Working together to help every student achieve their full potential will ensure that "Our Best Days are Ahead".

The facts are clear:
Car crashes are the #1 killer of teens.
1 in 4 teens crash during their first year.
Driver's ed historically has produced no measurable reduction in crash rates.

The Accident Avoidance Workshop reduces the likelihood of your student crashing by more than 75%. The State's "absolute minimum requirements" haven't changed in 30 years, but driving has, and so have our roads. As a result, the State has lost such confidence in their own driver training program, they don't even require it anymore. We think your child deserves more than the minimum. We think your child deserves a fighting chance on today's roads, and we hope you will want to give them the tools they will need to survive in today's world.

Nationally-renowned professional driving instructor Jeffrey "Homer" Stillwell has travelled the country training students and instructors alike on the strategies and techniques employed in avoiding, escaping, and surviving Emergency Driving conditions. Fewer than 1% of people in our country are schooled in how to respond to emergencies... make sure you and your student are included in this group! Parents, you'll learn new things at this engaging, informative, combined behind-the-wheel and classroom education. This isn't the Drivers Ed we all grew up with either.

Remember to Use your Publix Scan Cards!

Do you know that the CHS PTSA has received over $14,000 from Publix over the years?!  That is a lot of money - and it takes no effort at all.  Just use your scan card every time that you make a purchase at Publix.  If you do not have a scan card, you can get one at the front desk.  They are available throughout the school year.  You or your student can pick up extra cards for grandparents, friends and neighbors to use.  Everyone buys groceries, and having these cards scanned when you shop at Publix is an easy way to help CHS PTSA!
