The month of March has been incredibly busy with many constituent meetings about neighborhood concerns, projects and events. I had multiple council related meetings almost every day this month.  Here's what the March meeting breakdown looked like for me:

Constituent meetings: 20
Non Profit Events: 3
Council Meetings and related meetings: 4
Committee Meetings: 1
Department Head Briefings: 15
Community Meetings/Events where I was a speaker: 6

I had a few favorite events this month. The first was our 5th annual Touch A Truck event, who I co-hosted with my friend Justin Rudd. It was so great to see so many families out at the Granada parking lot, exploring the trucks and giving high fives to all of the truck operators. Huge thanks to the city employees who came on a Sunday to tell the curious kids about their work and the exciting trucks they get to drive every day. There were lots of smiling faces that day, which is why I absolutely love this event.  Our awesome team member, Lisa West, led this event on behalf of our team. She took care of every detail, working with Justin, the City, and the many truck providers to make sure the event was organized and enjoyable for all.

On Saturday the 30th, my council team went into the community and walked the streets to identify sidewalks, broken curbs and potholes in need of fixing.  Several community members came out to help us do this community check up. This was the first of many such events and we hope you will join us the next time we have a community checkup. Big thanks to Lisa West from my team for bringing some refreshments for our volunteers.

On Sunday the 31st we again partnered on the 5th annual Make a Difference Day. We started our morning at Temple Israel and from there 450 volunteers fanned out throughout the 3rd District to help with projects all over our community.  My family and I participated in the planting, weeding and mulching at Red Car Greenbelt.  It was really moving to see so many people come together to make our amazing community a better place.  Everyone there loves this city and the community where we are all trying to live, side by side, in support of one another.  I am so proud to be one of the sponsors of this event and grateful for the community members who came out there today.  A special recognition of our team member, Gabby Yates, for serving as our liaison on the MADD committee for the past year, for prepping the planting areas, and for being an overall amazing team member.

I hope your spring is off to a great start. It's the perfect season to think about the beauty of our community, with flowers blooming all around us and sunny days again becoming our norm.  If you ever want to talk to me about anything, express your concerns, get accurate information, or share your ideas or solutions for issues you have identified, please email me at Suzie@suzieAprice.com so that we can set up a time to meet.

Spring into Summer - April 28th, 2019

Mark your calendars! Our 5th Annual Spring into Summer Community Concert is set to take place on Sunday, April 28, 2019 at 4:30 PM with the concert, featuring Dustbowl Revival, starting at 5 PM. As many are aware, Dustbowl Revival has gained recognition and popularity throughout the years and they have a huge following.  Councilwoman Price is so thrilled that they are always receptive to performing for our community here at Marine Stadium Park with the help of our main sponsor, the Port of Long Beach.

It is our tradition to announce and thank the many Third District residents that volunteer to hold positions on the many commissions our City of Long Beach has to offer. Councilwoman Price will kick off the afternoon with a special thank you to these residents at 4:30 PM.

As always, the community concert is a free, family friendly event and this year the
Firefighters Association, Local 372, will grill and give away hot dogs to the crowd.  We  will also have a couple of food trucks as well as fresh kettle corn on hand so let's remember to support them.  Face painters and a bounce house will round out the festivities along with a Bike Registration/Rodeo opportunity onsite so please plan to ride/bring your bikes with your family to the park.  We are also working on having a pet adoption at the concert. Stay tuned for more details.

In case you want to listen to the concert from the water, please know that the water will be reduced to 5 mph 1 hour before the concert start time.

We look forward to seeing everyone at Marine Stadium Park as we kick off spring into summer 2019!

Community Check Up

Did you see residents walking around Greenbelt Heights and Alamitos Heights on Saturday morning with maps and clip boards? Our office held our first Community Check-Up events where we asked volunteers to go block by block and note any broken curbs, trees needing trimming, faded signs, etc.
this way we can follow up with City Staff about getting repairs made more proactively rather than one at a time as individual reports come in. We look forward to continuing this event with volunteers in other neighborhoods throughout the district to make sure that the district is well maintained, because who knows your neighborhood better than you?

Following the Arts

It's been exciting searching for the local art scene in the 3rd District. I wanted to unfold the art culture in our district, and I have learned there's a lot out there. It's great to know who the local artists are in Long Beach and what the local art scene is.

"Long Beach thrives from public belief in and support for creativity and the arts. Having access to a diverse spectrum of artists and cultural experiences is essential. Our artists are a crucial component to a healthy community as the arts are a societal foundation that brings people together, builds community, and promotes social progress."- Marka Burns

I hope to continue sharing what's going on in the art scene, so if you are an artist or part of a local organization please feel free to reach out to me so we can connect. I'm aiming to bring more recognition to our local art scene and for the local artists to show some support.  Let's explore and follow the arts in the 3rd District.

"The mission of the Arts Council for Long Beach (ACLB) is to foster creativity and culture, enliven communities and enable a thriving creative economy. Our vision is to help create a vibrant arts scene that makes Long Beach a premiere destination for residents, businesses, students and visitors."

Long Beach Creative Group
The Long Beach Creative Group (LBCG) was established in 2016 with the intention of bringing attention to the lack of gallery space in Long Beach for the many artist that live and work here.

Concentrated in the 3rd district the members of the group invited Councilwoman Suzie Price to a meeting of interested arts advocates. LBCG was so happy to know that Councilwoman Suzie Price was very encouraging from the get-go, and wanted to work with the group.

During the last 3 years LBCG has been exhibiting together at a number of venues in Long Beach. Having recently negotiated with Cameron Briggs to use his late father's studio and gallery LBCG will be able to have a permanent gallery space to exhibit LB artists. Rod Briggs was an admired and well-known painter in LB who wanted the gallery to serve the Long Beach artist community.

LBCG wishes to thank the Arts Council for Long Beach for their support and are very excited to have the opportunity to curate a number of exhibitions at the gallery this year.

2nd Street Improvement Project:
Construction Delay Update

As you may have seen over the past few weeks, there has been a road project underway on 2nd Street that will extend from Marina Drive, past Studebaker to the City limit near the Island Village community.

The construction project was delayed due to some unforeseen issues with utilities. Those issues have since been resolved and the asphalt paving between Marina Drive and PCH is tentatively scheduled to begin paving next weekend April 6th. Once this is completed, cones and traffic controls will be removed and all traffic lanes will again be open.

Regarding the lane closures, currently there is an unsafe condition with the open trench that requires lanes to remain closed until the contractors have filled the open trench. Also, the contractor has been instructed to focus on finishing the median work as a priority with the goal of reopening the lane on 2nd Street between PCH and Marina Drive as soon as possible.

The next phase will include concrete paving east of PCH. This is tentatively scheduled to begin the weekend of April 13th. Once this is completed the two westbound left turn lanes will be reopened.

This project covers a large area and includes a number of different improvements, so it is expected to be completed by early summer. The scope includes repaving, re-striping, and slurrying of the entire length of the project area. There will also be installations of a striped bike lane between Marina Drive and the eastern City limit, removal and replacement of existing medians, and pedestrian safety improvements such as new curb ramps and enhanced crosswalks throughout.

If there are additional concerns you see at this location please feel free to contact the (562)222-4495 for more information, or you can contact my office at (562)570-6300 or by email at district3@longbeach.gov

Standing No Trespass Update

Standing No Trespassing orders is a program that the Councilwoman initiated by working with the City Prosecutor as well as our police department. It is a program where businesses can give police the authority to enforce trespassing on their properties without needing to report it. This has been very well received by businesses throughout the district, especially on 2nd street in Belmont Shore, because police are able to proactively enforce trespassing rather than wait for the property owner to be present and agree to press charges.

Recently police have begun working directly with business owners in the area of 2nd
street and PCH to better address some of the ongoing trespassing issues they are experiencing and our office has received calls about.

Enforcing trespassing is not only a benefit to private property owners, but also can help the community and individuals suffering from homelessness who may need encouragement to accept the services that would get their lives back on the right track.

RECAP OF EVENTS
3rd Annual Emergency
Preparedness and Tsunami Walk

Spring is in full swing and the third district has been buzzing with so many events! On March 23rd, Councilwoman Price hosted the 3rd annual Emergency Preparedness Fair and Tsunami Walk at Will Roger Mini Park. We partnered with many local departments to provide information and resources to local constituents to prepare in case a tsunami hits the shores of Long Beach. The walk began at Will Rogers Mini Park and ended at Recreation Park Community Center to simulate an emergency evacuation to higher ground. At the Community Center, local residents were able to hear from experts on the best plans and actions to take to prepare for an unexpected emergency. The event was extremely informative and our team hopes this information can help keep residents safe in case of emergencies.

Touch a Truck

Start your engines! Councilwoman Suzie Price hosted our 5th annual 'LB Touch-a-Truck' event on March 24th alongside Justin Rudd's Community Action Team. More than 120 trucks parked right next to Rosie's Dog Beach giving members of our community the chance to touch and climb on top of various types of vehicles. The event also featured 10 food trucks as well as a peanut butter and canned tuna food drive to give to local food banks. Our team was also out at the event handing out sunscreen, chapstick, sunglasses, and other goodies to represent our district! It is estimated that over 10,000 people attended the event. Special thank you to Lisa West from our District 3 team who helped lead and plan this event. We are so happy with how successful the event was and we anticipate hosting it again next year.

Long Beach Water Increases Financial Incentive for Turf Removal Participation, Increases Square Footage Allowed and Makes Backyard Conversions Eligible

New funding available from Metropolitan Water District of Southern California  Long Beach, California - The Long Beach Board of Water Commissioners increased the financial incentive for Long Beach residents and businesses participating in the award-winning, Lawn-to-Garden turf removal program, using new funding provided by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. The Lawn-to-Garden program changes go into effect Monday, April 1, 2019.

The residential program changes include:
  • Increased the front yard conversion incentive to $3 per square foot (from the current $2).
  • Created a new backyard and side yard conversion incentive of $2 per square foot.
  • Increased the maximum square footage to 5,000 square feet (from the current 1,500 square feet).
The commercial program changes include:
  • Increased the conversion incentive to $2 per square foot.
  • Increased the maximum square footage to 50,000 square feet (from the current 25,000 square feet).
"We are proud to make these changes to our flagship Lawn-to-Garden program," said Gloria Cordero, president of the Long Beach Board of Water Commissioners. "Sustainability is our way of life in Long Beach, and these changes will allow for a greater number of beautiful, California-friendly landscape conversions and, ultimately, more water savings."

All Lawn-to-Garden projects will include water-wise or California native plants, 65 percent plant coverage, a storm water retention feature, an efficient irrigation system, habitat development and the use of mulch and other natural materials.
Residents that have completed a front yard Lawn-to-Garden transformation in the past may be eligible to transform their side and/or backyards. Customers will be limited to one application/project per fiscal year.

For more information and to apply visit lblawntogarden.com or call 562.570.2429.
Since its start in 2010, the Lawn-to-Garden program has supported and incentivized landscape conversions from thirsty and non-functional grass to beautiful, water-wise gardens. It has successfully convertedover 3,400 landscapes and 3.5 million square feet of turf.

Each spring, Long Beach Water hosts a free Lawn-to-Garden Tour and Festival that features water-wise landscape conversions throughout the city and a water education festival at 1800 E Wardlow Road. The 8th Annual Lawn-to-Garden Tour and Festival is on Saturday, June 1, 2019 from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. Start your day by touring up to 20 newly transformed gardens and speak to the homeowners about their beautiful, water-wise landscapes. After your tour, join the festival and enjoy delicious foods and beverages available for purchase by our Certified Blue Restaurants, entertainment, learn about ways to be more sustainable and visit our California-friendly plant sale. BUSINESS
Knead Donuts & Tea

E ach month, we spotlight a business in the Third District.  In this profile, I met with the owner behind the award-winning donut shop to tell us more about Knead Donuts & Tea.

Donuts are one of the most popular sweets in the world, and one of the hardest temptations to resist.  The thought of a donut makes my mouth water.  Although the Third District has its fair share of doughnut shops, we are thrilled to have one of the City's best...Knead Donuts & Tea, located on 7th Streetbetween Newport Avenue and Redondo Avenue.  If Yelp reviews are a good indicator, then Knead Donuts is a winner.  Knead is the brainchild of owner Huey Behuynh and he makes the most amazing creations.

These are not  your typical glazed or jelled-filled doughnuts. They are hand-dipped and  made fresh throughout the day. From twisty tiger tails, horchata doughnuts, flambeed crème brûlée doughnuts, blueberry doughnuts to new creations he dreams up every few weeks, you will always find something yummy, and if you're a purest you can always get the most amazing chocolate old fashion or regular glazed too.

Huey opened his first Knead Donuts in Tennessee and then took over and revamped Gladstone Donuts in 2017 to what we see today.  He has about 30 different types of doughnuts, but also includes different breakfast items and croissant sandwiches as well as Vietnamese Coffee and iced coffee. Last year they were voted in the top 20 doughnut shops in Los Angeles County...and we all know how many doughnuts shops that must include! If you are wondering, according to the Los Angeles Times, there were 842 doughnut shops in LA County in 2007.  I assume there are even more today.

Huey Behuynh is a hard working and creative business owner and we are thrilled that he has made his home in the CD3.

Give this place a try. You will not be disappointed!

D O YOU KNOW.....
April is national library month, Councilwoman Price will be highlighting our fantastic libraries throughout the month to encourage residents to take advantage of this amazing resource. They are an amazing place for kids to spend time and learn. Long Beach Public Libraries also host programs on a huge range of topics. Check out their website.

Libraries can serve so many needs from being a place for families to go and encourage reading, a place for students to research and do homework, to a place for adults to do work or take online courses. Our libraries fill an essential role in the community and since the expansion Councilwoman Price piloted at Bayshore Library to include Sunday hours, the access and benefit to the community has continued to grow. So, during this National Library Month, take some time to check out your local libraries.

Residents told us that the most important issue facing Long Beach is homelessness and housing, and that they want to help, but are not sure how. So this time, conversations will focus on ways that we, as individuals and businesses can make a positive impact for those experiencing homelessness. Specifically, come learn directly from nonprofit and community leaders:

1. Why are people affected by homelessness in Long Beach?
2. What is being done about it?
3. What can I as a resident or business owner do to help?

It's time we use our talents, strengths and resources to help.
