Dear friends of the LGBT Resource Center,
In case you didn't yet get a chance to see the announcement regarding the Gender Recognition Act, Shaun Travers, our Director, has been appointed to co-chair a Steering Committee which will lead UC San Diego to fully embrace our nonbinary, trans, genderqueer, intersex - and all folks on the gender spectrum - through our policies, data systems, and daily practice. This means that we have work to do to support our nonbinary, transgender, and intersex community at UC San Diego. And since folks that receive the Rainbow Newsletter are all over UC San Diego, and we all are connected to the LGBTQIA+ community, we have the ability to see what needs to be done. And that is where we could use YOUR help in the work.
Assess the ways your area uses gender in a binary way (i.e. male and female, or men and women), then determine what steps might be required to ensure inclusion of a nonbinary category into these systems. This might entail updating campus data systems, reformatting reports, including nonbinary in surveys and assessments, and addressing physical spaces and facilities. This may also require training and professional education for employees to ensure appropriate implementation of inclusive policies and customer service practices. Once you have made an initial assessment, contact Shaun at [email protected] with your findings. The steering committee can provide input into further changes, and include your unit-specific findings in the campus-wide recommendations they will advance to senior leadership.
Now is the time for us all to help to create space for our nonbinary, transgender and intersex community. And we can do it together!
