5 Podcast Suggestions for Summer from FAME's College Access and Financial Education Team
Looking for a new podcast to add to your collection? Ever wondered what the CAFE team listens to when they're on the road? Do you need something to listen to while (hopefully) relaxing this summer? If any of those are true, this is the list for you. This month's 5 on the 5th will keep you happy and entertained all summer long!
“If I have to pick one, it has to be Freakonomics Radio by Stephen J. Dubner,” says Maria MacDougal, College Access Counselor. “Adapted from the book and movie of the same name, Freakonomics is a podcast all about social economics. Dubner and his guests discuss common social issues from a research perspective that studies trends, patterns, and social behavior. It’s such a great listen for those days on the road, and often makes me think about things in a new way, such as why we procrastinate even under pressure, the social science of why we love or hate certain foods, and why we are obsessed with lawn maintenance. It’s a creative take on social science and is often funny and always engaging. A must-listen!”
Nikki Vachon, College Access Counselor, recently stumbled across one of her new favorite podcasts, Journey to Launch while putting together a presentation on building (or rebuilding) good credit. Journey to Launch is hosted by Jamila Souffrant, a Certified Financial Education Instructor, blogger, podcast host, and money coach who became fascinated with the prospect of retiring early during what she calls her “mental breakdown,” which happened during her daily 3-4 hour daily commute while pregnant with her first son. The podcast explores all aspects of reaching Financial Freedom, from increasing income, becoming tax efficient, paying off debt, investing, saving and learning how to retire early and maintaining wealth. Nikki comments, “Up next I’ll listen to episode 005: ‘Becoming a Millionaire on a Teacher’s Salary.’ I have learned SO much and am interested in so many more of the topics she covers!”
“One of my favorite podcasts is  The Tim Ferriss Show ,” says Mary Dyer, Financial Education Officer. “The podcast includes a variety of insightful conversations and interviews that Tim has had with world-class performers, including athletes, musicians, innovators, and entrepreneurs. Tim distills their daily routines and habits, including time management strategies and work/life philosophies into tools and routines that anybody can use. Tim’s companion books, Tools of the Titans and Tribe of Mentors are my go-to gifts for college grads.”
Hannah Bobker, Financial Capability Coordinator, enjoys NPR’s Planet Money . Each 15-30 minute Planet Money podcast uses real stories to illustrate how the economy works. She says, “Its story-telling approach makes daunting topics, such as international trade, the U.S. agriculture economy, and government regulation, approachable and personal. As you listen to entertaining interviews with a wide array of guests, you will leave with takeaways you can apply to your personal financial life.”
Motley Fool Answers – I’ve got questions. They’ve got answers,” says Jessica Whittier, College Access Counselor. It’s a spinoff of Motley Fool Money , a widely popular radio broadcast that is much more detailed and largely investor focused. Jessica says, “In the ‘Answers’ version of Motley Fool , host Alison Southwick and personal finance expert Robert Brokamp tackle questions from everyday investors. Their insights are simple to comprehend and address topics like understanding your workplace retirement investing options, basics of estate planning, buying a home, and managing money with your partner. They’ve also done a number of episodes around paying for college. They deliver just enough information in a witty style to make you feel like you’ve got a grasp of the topic, but not so much that you’re bored to tears. I personally recommend the July 12, 2016 episode titled, Credit Score Mailbagapalooza .”
