This week we visit with the Upper Elementary students, who are increasingly aware of the gray areas of life and exploring their sense of justice beyond the classroom. The students continue to ask “Why?” and want to know how rules and circumstances benefit themselves and others as they develop a basis for talking about politics and government. The curriculum allows our fourth- through sixth-grade students to make more detailed examinations of the five “Great Stories”. Additionally, the students grow their independence and expand their movements outside the classroom with “going out” activities and longer overnight field trips.

The journey that all children take at St. Catherine’s is made possible by contributions to the

Every week – leading up to the feast day of St. Catherine of Siena – we are showcasing one Montessori program to illustrate the journey our children take as they progress through St. Catherine’s, from Infant Community to High School. We invite you to reflect on your family’s journey, and ask that you participate in the annual SCM Fund campaign.

PSO Volunteer Opportunities for 2019-2020 School Year
|
It is time to sign up to volunteer with the PSO for next school year! Please consider signing up either as a co-chair of a committee or as a committee member. Committee members support the co-chairs by signing up to complete tasks on an as-needed basis. Many of these tasks can be completed at home or at the office (such as calling vendors, setting up a SignUpGenius, writing emails, etc.) and do not require coming to campus! All parents are members of the PSO simply by having children enrolled at St. Catherine's.

INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM
|
|
The Adolescent Community traveled to Austin yesterday for their four-day trip to learn more about how the Texas government operates. In advance of the trip, the students researched and learned about the US government, the Texas government, and how bills become law. They also researched their state representatives and the bills being proposed this session. The students will meet with their representatives to discuss bills they care about and lobby for actions they want officials to take. AC students learned about lobbying and the important role that storytelling plays in the process during a recent classroom visit from the executive director and congregational outreach director of
Texas Impact

Welcome to the High School Corner!
As many of you already know, a major part of the weekly curriculum in the High School is Current Events. Each week, two students give detailed presentations on topics that have been in the news recently. While in the past, we have been free to pick almost any topic that is both current and interesting to us, this semester we have taken a more focused approach. With the goal of integrating Current Events with other classes, such as Human Geography, Environmental Science, and our coursework for the climate change symposium, all student presentations have been linked to at least one of the following three areas of study: trade/economics, migration, and the environment. We didn’t love the idea at first because it gave the impression of being difficult. However, we have come to realize that almost everything that is in the news is in some way related to these topics.
Most recent presentation topics:
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of the Palm Oil Industry
- Connected to trade and the environment
The History of Vaccines: What the Anti-Vaxxer Argument Means for our Health
- Connected to the environment
The Kim Jong-un and Trump Summit
Boeing 737 Max 8 & 9 Crisis
- Connected to economics/trade
Trade Sanctions on North Korea
- Connected to economics/trade
Cyclone Idai: The Aftermath in Mozambique, Malawi, and Zimbabwe
- Connected to economics/trade and the environment
Migrant Caravans from Central America: Why They’re Moving
- Connected to the environment and migration
For many of us, Current Events ranks as one of our favorite classes. This class has taught us how to discuss delicate issues and how to think critically about the issues facing the world today. All of this had led us to learn more about ourselves and the issues that we are passionate about. We are extremely lucky to have Current Events be part of our curriculum.
Thanks for reading this week’s entry, and we hope to see you back next time!
Jacob B. and Sophia D.
