Issue 127
Have you ever heard of the Emperor Qin's Terracotta Army? While it's a remarkable study in both design and engineering, its ancient creator is closely tied to our current science of metrology. Our local Cincinnati Art Museum is currently exhibiting The Terracotta Army: Legacy of the First Emperor of China. In addition to several of the terracotta gents, the exhibit features other remarkable items, such as a metal weight from 209 BCE - a direct result of Emperor Qin's development of standardized weights and measures in China.

We live in an interconnected world - where the lines between art and science, time periods, and countries often blend together. If you aren't familiar with the Terracotta Army, check it out...
Troubleshooting Measurement Issues

Have you ever looked at measurement results and asked yourself "Is this data right?" After completing a test and evaluating data, you might observe obvious signs of problems. Many factors can affect your data, including measurement range, measure and input amplitude and frequency content, as well as the data acquisition sample rate. The importance of measurement parameters cannot be overlooked when accuracy is the end goal...

Tip of the Month

Impacts from instrumented hammers, particularly when using the hard steel tips, can cause extremely high g levels of impulse response. Therefore, whenever performing impact hammer calibrations, make certain that the reference accelerometer data does not saturate, truncating the measuring impulse function and significantly altering the calibration results.
Blast from the Past:
What is ISO 17025 All About?
ISO

This is a common question when it comes to understanding the quality system covering the calibration of sensors, like accelerometers. More and more often, customers are requiring dynamic test service providers to be certified to the requirements of ISO/IEC 17025:2005 - the standard which covers the "General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories."...
