NYCPM's 107th Graduation Celebrates High-Achieving Class of 2018

At the 107th commencement of NYCPM, 85 members of the Class of 2018 proudly accepted their diplomas, signed the Book of Physicians, took the Hippocratic Oath en masse and marched out of Alice Tully Hall as new doctors of podiatric medicine.

Chairman of the Board of Trustees of NYCPM Dies;
Highly Decorated Korean War Vet Was 89
 Maj. Gen. William F. Ward, Jr., A.U.S. (Ret.), (1928 - 2018), who had retired as Chairman from the New York College of Podiatric Medicine Board of Trustees in May 2018, died on June 21.
He had been elected to NYCPM's Board on September 26, 2000 as a Trustee. He was elected Chairman of the Board July 2006; was elected Vice Chairman July 2008; and elected Chairman July 2014. General Ward was also Chairman of the Trustees of Podia Insurance, Ltd., an insurance company wholly owned by NYCPM.

Matrona Giakoumis, DPM ('10)
Instructor, Department of Surgery
Matrona Giakoumis, DPM ('10) completed her
 undergraduate studies at Fordham University's Lincoln Center campus in 2004,with a bachelor's degree in natural sciences with a minor in the visual arts.
Her pre-med classes were held at the university's Bronx campus. She began to study podiatric medicine at NYCPM in 2006; in the two-year interval, she worked with the
American Red Cross as an emergency services responder.

First Poster Day Celebrates Research, Collaboration and Accomplishment
The posters displayed in the Bruce Frankel Conference Center on June 11 seemed to number far more than 19 -- they formed an impressive, room-filling circle of information and illustration on this first-ever Poster Day.

Dr. Mark H. Swartz Named First Lecture Professor at Hospital in China
Mark H. Swartz, MD,
Professor of Medicine and Vice President, Medical and Professional Affairs of NYCPM, visited Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, in Changsha, China (in Hunan Province), where he was appointed First Lecture Professor of the hospital in a ceremony on April 24.

Randy E. Cohen, DPM, Retires After 40 Years
at NYCPM
 "I thought I had the perfect job." That's how Randy E. Cohen, DPM,
Professor of Radiology and Director, Radiology Section, describes the position he's held at NYCPM for 40 years. Dr. Cohen graduated from the Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine (now Temple) in 1977, spent a year in a surgical residency at Coney Island Hospital, then spent a year at NYCPM in a radiology fellowship ... and never left. In early June, Paul Liswood, DPM was elected the  new NYSPMA President. NIH research and NYCPM's Student Wellness Partner Up
NYCPM's Professor in Pre-Clinical Sciences, Peter Barbosa, PhD, and his collaborator from Mount Sinai, Dr. Jeffrey Weiss, recently completed a two-year NIH-sponsored research project exploring mindfulness in persons living with HIV. After the project was completed, the yoga mats used in the study needed a new home, and Barbosa and Weiss decided to donate them to NYCPM's new student club, the Wellness Club. Michelle Pham, Class of 2021, is not only a club member but also a yoga instructor and has been facilitating yoga sessions for students. The aim of the club will be to promote healthy living, both mentally and physically, by appealing to a large number of students with different approaches to wellness and health.

IPC Students Create Spanish Guide as Fundraiser for Medical Mission
To raise funds for their late June medical mission to the Dominican Republic, members of the International Podiatry Club (IPC) created a literally pocket-sized Spanish Podiatric Medicine Pocket Guide (2018). Meant to fit into a lab-coat pocket, the diminutive booklet translates basic vocabulary, then addresses common medical terms and common diabetic foot terms, before translating questions that are meant to start conversations in Spanish with patients (and not take the place of a formal translator).

Sara Stachura Receives ABPM Graduate Merit Award
Sara Stachura, valedictorian of the Class of 2018, was awarded the American Board of Podiatric Medicine's (ABPM) Graduate Merit Award, recognizing her excellence in podiatric medicine and podiatric orthopedics. , PhDc has been named Orange County's next Commissioner of Health. Dr. Gelman completed her residency at Coney Island Hospital in 2014. She earned her Masters of
Public Health in 2012 from Nova Southeastern College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Lauderdale, FL.
