Summer 2019

Protecting W hat You Have!

I keep seeing headlines about market concerns, security issues and more.

So much is done online, so much depends on automatic trading, and so much is taken for granted when it's easy to utilize all these items.

The CRA scam where many of us have been getting phone calls indicating that we owe money to CRA, has been unsettling.

Recently, one of the largest security breaches was announced with Capital One.  Over 100 million people were affected of which 6 million  are Canadian.  They have the alleged perpetrator in custody, but that doesn't help if the data has been sold/released.

I will provide a few tips to help ensure that you protect your data.

1) Have as few credit cards & financial institutions  as possible.  The fewer service providers you use, the less likely you will be to get hacked, or have your information stolen.

2)Ensure you never keep your passcodes with your cards.  (Yes, I know this is obvious, but it still happens).

3)Do not send your important numbers, such as your credit card number, your social insurance  number, bank accounts, etc. over the internet, or email.  If you are providing this information, do it through a secure source.  There are a number of places that provide additional security, such as Dropbox, Box, and more.  You can also put a password on an email or attachment that contains confidential information.  Or simply call in the information, and ensure you're speaking to the right person at the other end.

When it comes to protecting yourself from scammers, there are a number of additional steps to take.  Ensure you verify the source, and never provide this confidential information to anybody over the phone, if they called you.
It's just as important to protect your assets as well as your I.D. and privacy.  I wrote this article some years ago, but it's still valid, and a good reminder for due diligence when it comes to protecting your data.

For now, have a read.  Enjoy the summer, just don't be giving away too much information to anybody you don't know.

I've written a few articles in the past.  Have a quick read to refresh your memory on protecting yourself and your money.
