Understanding What's Important: Lessons found in community involvement

At M&T Bank, we have always been guided by the principle underscored in our tagline: "Understanding what's important." This principle is incorporated when our team works with banking customers to help them reach their financial goals, and when we foster relationships with the community and nonprofit partners in the neighborhoods where our customers and employees live and work.
In fact, as part of our company culture, we provide employees with 40 hours a year of volunteer time for them to use in support of causes most important to them. Footprint-wide, our team members contributed thousands of volunteer service hours and we gave more than $165 million in bank grants.
In southern New Jersey, our employees are involved with a variety of nonprofits. Denise Monahan, AVP and manager of our Commercial Banking division in southern New Jersey serves on the board of Ronald McDonald House of Southern New Jersey, and regularly engages employees in various volunteer events. She's not alone. In Philadelphia and southern New Jersey we have employees sitting on the boards of nearly 50 organizations, with which they regularly involve their teams in a multitude of volunteer and team-building opportunities.
Recently, the community banking team participated in the Hunger Games cooking competition to support the Food Bank of South Jersey. Our team challenged other corporate teams to create a dish in 45 minutes using one box of mystery ingredients. These events give our employees an opportunity to support their local communities, while building relationships and strengthening their collaboration and creativity. In turn, our banking teams are better equipped to find and execute solutions to benefit their customers, local businesses, and the community.
At our heart, M&T is a community bank. While our charitable contributions are certainly a large part of how we support our communities making them better places to live and work, we also provide loans and investments for community development initiatives--such as affordable housing and small businesses--and sponsor local events to better connect with and learn from our customers.
Make no mistake, M&T Bank exists because of its customers. It's our strong belief that being guided by community-focused banking principles is "what's important" for our business to succeed. We know we are not alone in this belief, but have and will always know that a reinvestment in our communities is a top priority at M&T Bank.

Consider mailing a "Thank you" card, with a short, sincere, handwritten note to anyone who has helped you along the way.
Many years ago, I ran a construction company. We received well over one hundred Christmas and Happy New Year cards. Many were obviously lavish and expensive, with the names of their companies, embossed in gold. By mid-January, they all found their way to the trash cans....except for one. One of our clients took the time to write a short handwritten note that went like this: "Rich, thanks for always going the extra mile for us. You have kept us at the top of our game....couldn't have done it without you!" over his signature. That card, I still have today, as a reminder of how powerful a short, sincere handwritten note can be.

Are STEM Graduates Career-Ready?
As an employer, you know the importance of college graduates being career-ready. Recent studies show that employers expect STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) graduates to have key soft (employability) skills along with their technical skills. But which soft skills are important specifically to you and your organization? If you are an employer/manager/project lead of graduates from any of the STEM disciplines, please take a few minutes provide your insight and complete a short survey being conducted by Barbara D. Turner, a faculty member at Rowan College-Gloucester County and doctoral candidate at Wilmington University, both CCSNJ members. Findings will be shared with CCSNJ members in an upcoming issue of CCSNJ Connection.
