FIPPOA
Fire Island Pines Property Owners Association
Greetings!
Welcome to 2021!

In my last newsletter, I wished everyone a happy new year and thanked so many in the community who contributed to keeping the Pines healthy and thriving during the past, challenging year. Many expressed their desire to move on from 2020 and welcome the possibilities of a return to normalcy in 2021. Who could anticipate what craziness would await us in just the first few days of the year?

So it is refreshing to turn away for a few minutes from Washington, DC, and focus on the amazing things that are happening during the winter in the Pines. And amazing things ARE happening! The new Friday afternoon boat from Sayville to the Pines at 3:15 pm has been well traveled thus far, in large part due to more residents enjoying time in their homes this winter than in years past.
As we kick off 2021, let me also share with you some of the incredible work being done by FIPPOA’s Honoring Trailblazers Task Force.
As I recently informed you, the FIPPOA Board voted to rename Harbor Park as “Trailblazers Park” to celebrate the achievements of people who—through advocacy, action, example or personal sacrifice—have brought about positive changes in the rights and recognition of the LGBTQIA+ community and been true "Trailblazers." FIPPOA’s Honoring Trailblazers Task Force is seeking an artist to create site–specific original artwork for Trailblazers Park and has issued the following “Call for Artists.” We welcome all submissions. All proposals must be submitted no later than 5:00pm on February 14, 2021 using the required form.

In addition, in response to the request from some community members for more time to nominate potential Trailblazers to be honored, the Task Force has extended the deadline for the submission of nominees to January 22, 2021. Nominations should be submitted using this form. Nominees need not have a connection to Fire Island Pines.

If you have trouble submitting a form, please email The Task Force at fippoatrailblazers@gmail.com.
Barbara Sahlman

Beloved longtime resident, artist, art collector, art historian and philanthropist, Barbara Sahlman, passed away peacefully into the hearts and minds of her family on January 4th in her Manhattan loft.

During her five decades in the Pines, Barbara served on the board of FIPAP as well as the advisory board for the planning and building of Whyte Hall.

Barbara’s abstract marble and alabaster sculptures were so sought after that they always sold out at the Pines Art Show.

In Barbara’s final moments, she talked about the magnificent sunsets from her home on Bass Walk as well as the many lovely walks she took along the beach.

To the entire Sahlman family, we extend our heartfelt sympathies. We will miss Barbara’s impeccable sense of style and incredible wit, and we will be forever grateful to have shared time with her. She was a grand lady. She will forever remain in our hearts and memories.
