FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK
Your Child's Development: The High
School Years!
The high school years are a busy time for families of teens, who are rapidly
changing as they develop physically, mentally, socially and emotionally.
Teens spend more time thinking about their future and discussing topics about which they feel
strongly. They are able to think more abstractly and understand more complex issues than
when they were at age 13.
Many teens take on part-time jobs, extra-curricular activities and more challenging classes at
school. At the same time, many teens expand their social life and do more activities apart from
their families. While teens enjoy their new-found freedom, they are often uncertain about
making good decisions and depend on their parents to help them. Parents can help prepare
their teens in the high school years by setting limits for their behavior, and most importantly,
listening and talking with them.
Below are a few examples of the abilities parents can expect their teens to show.
If you are concerned about your child's learning or behavior, talk with your child's teachers, the
school counselor, the school principal or the district special education coordinator.
WHAT CHILDREN DO: THE HIGH SCHOOL YEARS
- Understand complex issues;
- Take on many responsibilities including work and extracurricular activities;
- Spend more time with friends;
- Need time alone as well as time with others;
- Plan for their future.
As we enter the final few months of school, stay in touch with your child's academic and social
progress. Ohio State Testing begins next Monday April 8th and continues through early
May. We will continue to work with you to give your child the very best educational experience.
On a separate note, I want to call your attention to a matter that involves your sons and daughters, the senior students of Delaware Hayes. For the past several years senior students at Delaware, as well as many other high schools, have played a game called "senior tag," which is a tournament that involves teams who attempt to eliminate each other by shooting each other with squirt guns. While this sounds like it could be harmless fun, there are certain risks and dangers involved of which you should be aware.
The nature of the game is to take opponents by surprise, which often means waiting outside homes late at night or in the early morning hours, a potential problem with neighbors and police who can mistake the students as trespassers or prowlers. Another issue involves the rule that students cannot be eliminated (shot) if they are naked, or nearly naked, which could present ethical and legal problems. Students attempting to catch their opponents have also been known to engage in reckless behavior in cars. Finally, students running around with any type of gun drawn can create situations that confuse and frighten others, and even put their own safety and lives at risk.
Delaware Hayes does not condone this activity, and any student caught engaging in this activity on school grounds or at school functions will face disciplinary action. With fun, competition, and prize money involved, young people may be liable to use poor judgment and endanger themselves or others. Please be aware of these risks and address them with your children.

CAPS & GOWNS
Caps and gowns, graduation announcements and all other graduation products will be delivered by Jostens on Monday, April 15th. Delivery will take place during 5th and 6th period in the main gym.
If you ordered directly from Jostens: If you have a balance due, an invoice has been mailed to your home. Please bring your final payment with you on the 15th. As a reminder, Jostens will no longer accept checks as final payment. If you would like to pay in advance over the phone using a credit or debit card, please call 1-800-Jostens.
If you ordered directly with Mrs. Backus in the main office: If you are not sure if you have a balance due or need to discuss payment arrangements, please see Mrs. Backus. You may pay by check made payable to Delaware City Schools, money order or cash.
If you are unable to pick up your items on April 15th during 5th or 6th period, your items will be stored in the main office and available for pick up beginning April 16th between the hours of 7:00am-3:30pm.

JUNIOR/SENIOR PROM
The Junior/Senior Prom, Enchanted Forest, will be held at Villa Milano on Friday, April 12th at 7:00 pm.

COUNSELING NEWS
ACT TEST
ACT scores for the Juniors who took the state-funded ACT in March are not in yet. Juniors should be receiving those at their home mailing address in the next 2 - 3 weeks.
COLLEGE CREDIT PLUS
College Credit Plus (CCP) application deadlines are quickly approaching. If you are planning to take CCP courses at Otterbein, Columbus State, Ohio State, or other institution offering CCP, the application deadlines for Fall registration is typically May 1st. Please make an appointment with Mrs. Pollard if you need help completing the application process. You may schedule an appointment with her during the school day through her
online calendar.
COMMUNITY SERVICE REQUIREMENT
A reminder to all students that they must complete 21 hours of community service prior to graduation. Any unpaid service completed outside of school hours will count towards this requirement, and the service can be completed over all four years of high school. The form for documenting community service is
HERE and forms can also be picked up in the Main Office or Counseling Office. All completed forms should be returned to the Main Office.
OST TESTING
Administration of the Ohio State Tests (OST's) will begin on Monday, April 8th and continue through early May. There are seven state tests that students need to take as part of the state's graduation requirements. The tests are taken at the end of the school year in which students complete the associated course. The schedule for the OST's at Hayes this year is as follows:
- English-Language Arts 2: April 8th and 9th
- English-Language Arts 1: April 10th and 11th
- US History: April 12th and 15th
- Algebra 1: April 16th and 17th
- Geometry: April 24th and 25th
- Government: April 26th and 29th
- Biology: April 30th and May 1st
Questions regarding the administration of the OST's can be directed to your student's school counselor.
