April 2019
Greetings!
April is here and spring is in full gear! All of our spring class and activity schedules have just begun. We are excited about the Egg Hunt on April 13th and our "Buy a Heart, Save a Life" campaign benefiting the American Heart Association.

April is Stress Awareness Month so this is a great time to re-commit to your fitness goals since exercise is a vital part of stress management. Our wide range of classes and services help you create the healthiest version of yourself.

Perhaps one of the best ways to manage your stress is to know that summer is right around the corner. It is almost time to enjoy our outdoor facilities with friends and family!

In good health,
Liberty Athletic Club
American Heart Association
From the desk of Kim Stetson
According to the American Heart Association (AHA), “heart disease claims more lives than the next four causes of death combined, including cancer. On average, an American dies of heart disease every 35 seconds. Only 13 percent of women view heart disease as a health threat, even though it’s their No. 1 killer.”

In an effort to raise awareness and funds for this horrible disease, Liberty Athletic Club is proud to be a part of this year’s Washtenaw County Heart Walk at Eastern Michigan University’s Rynearson Stadium, May 11 th. We’re inviting you to walk with Liberty Athletic Club Director of Fitness & Wellness, R.J. Meske, and your fellow Liberty members and staff in the fight to make healthier, longer lives possible for everyone.

The Heart Walk is an opportunity to change the future and make a positive impact in the lives of those who are affected by heart disease and stroke. You can join Team Liberty Athletic Club at the following link: http://www2.heart.org/goto/teamlac

Donations are not required for participating in the Heart Walk. However, if you would like to make a donation, we encourage you to make it at the club as part of our Paper Heart program. Stop by the front desk for more details on how you can contribute to the fight against heart disease and stroke!

As a member of this year’s Executive Leadership Team for the walk, Liberty’s R.J. Meske is spearheading the club’s involvement and is excited that Liberty is providing two opportunities in which to increase awareness and raise funds.

Myzone Mania will be held this Saturday, April 6 th, at 8:15 a.m. Led by RJ, this heart-based workout for My Zone users will include interval training and good music. There is a fee of $15 per person, with all proceeds going to the AHA. As an added incentive, all participants will have their names placed in a drawing for a chance to win a $150, $100 or $50 Liberty Athletic Club gift card!

The second activity involves paper hearts. With heart disease killing one in three Americans, most people know someone with heart disease. If club members donate any amount of money to the AHA through Liberty, they will receive a paper heart on which to share a name or message. The hearts will be displayed on the windows along the indoor lap pool to honor those lost, as well as to provide a compelling visual of the number of people affected.

Members who contribute $25 or more will have an opportunity to win a free month’s dues, a massage, a private training session, a Myzone belt, a semi-private Pilates session for four, or a semi-private training session for four. Over $1000 in services …

“So many of the contributing factors to heart disease and stroke are lifestyle related,” R.J. shared. “We do our best at Liberty to help embrace an active lifestyle, but as a nation we’re moving less and eating more across all ages. Obesity rates are rising across almost every demographic, including children and young adults.”

“The AHA not only funds research that helps millions of Americans with heart disease,” R.J. continued, “but it also offers an extensive educational platform aimed at preventing heart disease in Americans.”

Let’s increase awareness and raise funds for this worthy cause. Join Myzone Mania on Saturday; make a contribution for one or more paper hearts; or participate in the Washtenaw County Heart Walk on May 11 th

Walk with a friend, a family member, RJ, or on one of the personal trainer’s teams! “By participating in the Heart Walk, you’re joining a million Heart Walk heroes from across the nation raising funds for life saving science. Science that can teach us all how to live long and be Healthy For Good.” (AHA)
Celery Juice- Is It Really Healthy?
From the desk of Susan Cutshaw, M.S. Nutritionist
If you’ve gone to the store recently and noticed the organic celery is always out of stock, you might just be a bit behind the current trend. Celery juicing is the latest greatest health craze to make the rounds on social media and is endorsed by movie stars like Gwyneth Paltrow, Sylvester Stallone and even Robert De Niro. It’s touted to cure everything from skin conditions to digestive issues, but is it really all it’s cracked up to be?

The idea that celery juice is a miracle cure was first introduced by Anthony William, a self appointed medical expert, who hears voices that direct his medical advice. There is little to no scientific evidence to support his health claims. However, there is evidence that suggests the phytochemicals in celery juice may reduce inflammation and blood pressure, but those benefits may be achieved from eating celery as well.

Although celery contains potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, electrolytes, water, vitamins A, C, and K, plus phytochemicals, flavonoids and fiber, much of those nutrients and their health benefits are lost when juicing. Take fiber for instance, which is stripped away during the juicing process. The fiber found in whole fruits and vegetables can improve your digestive health and help keep you full between meals. To top it all off, making celery juice can be wasteful; recipes call for using a whole bunch for a 16oz glass.

People who regularly drink celery juice do report weight loss. If celery juice is replacing another more caloric drink or meal then it makes sense that weight loss would occur.

1 cup of celery juice = 42 calories
1 cup of orange juice = 112 calories

If you decide celery juice is the preferable option, consider saving the excess pulp for soups and sauces instead of tossing it down the drain. Ultimately you’ll be receiving the benefit of some of the fiber, vitamins and minerals that are the byproducts of juicing.

In the end, having a debate about whether to eat celery or drink it means you’re considering something new. Though it might be best to enjoy celery in its original form, you will still reap some of the benefits from the juice. The only wrong answer might be avoiding celery altogether.

After winning District & State Playoffs, the Liberty Women's 7.5 Combo team traveled to Fort Wayne, IN, where they competed against teams from Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Ohio for the Midwest title. Although they didn't win the title, many competitive and fun matches were played. One of the highlights of the weekend was creating memories with teammates, friends, and family. The camaraderie of the Liberty tennis community is what it's all about!

Activity Etiquette

Lap Swimming
Swimmers are expected to circle swim / share lanes when individual lanes are full. For the safety of all swimmers please notify the swimmer in the lane before entering the pool to share the lane. If possible, swimmers should position themselves in lanes by skill level and/or similar lap swim workouts. If you are faster than the person in front of you, simply graze their foot a time or two. This should signal them to “pull over” at the next wall to allow you to pass. Do not grab or aggressively swipe at the swimmer’s feet. When circle swimming, should the swimmer behind you graze your feet more than once, or simply be swimming a faster pace, it is proper etiquette to “pull over” at the next wall and allow them to pass.

Tennis Ball Baskets
We ask that those tennis balls stored in ball baskets be used for instructional purposes only. Cans of balls are available at the front desk for individual purchase.
Women's Locker Room Renovation Project

We are excited to announce that on Monday, April 8th, we will begin a significant renovation of the women’s locker rooms. In an effort to provide women’s locker room facilities throughout the renovation process, we will close only one section of the locker room at any given time.

On April 8 th , the adult women’s restroom/shower area through the rear section will be the first to close. The first half of the adult women’s locker room (including the vanity area) will continue to remain open during this time. The front women’s locker room will also remain open.

Permanent Lockers
Unfortunately, the renovations will impact usage of all permanent lockers, dependent on the location of the locker relative to the area under construction. During the first phase, members with permanent lockers 55-134 and 203-214 will not have access to their lockers . Although lockers will remain intact, we ask that any necessary items be removed by Monday, April 8th. During this closure, a monetary locker credit will be applied to your account. We anticipate to re-open this area in mid-June.

Shower & Vanity Areas Remaining Open & Available
  • Front women’s locker room
  • Vanity area in the adult women’s locker
  • Family locker room-Monday-Friday from 5:30am-noon, the family locker room showers will be designated for women, and children under 5 years old. During these hours there will be semi private screens in the vanity area, but please realize this is NOT a private area. Therefore, it will be necessary to remain dressed in the vanity area. The toilets and day lockers may continue to be utilized by the entire membership.

 Day Lockers Available
  • Front women’s locker room
  • Family locker room
  • Breezeway lockers (located in the breezeway between the lap pool and family locker room). The front desk will provide locks/keys for day use of these lockers.

We Look Forward to the Following NEW Enhancements
  • Dry sauna and heater.
  • Ceramic tile in all the showers, toilets, and wet areas.
  • Plumbing fixtures (shower fixtures, sinks, faucets, drains, and toilets).
  • Carpet, paint, and wallpaper.
  • Vanity cabinets and mirrors.
  • Lighting fixtures in all areas of the locker rooms.
  • Redesigned lounge space (in the adult women’s locker room) with a television, contemporary wall art, and new furniture.
  • Contemporary benches.
  • Locker doors in the front women’s locker room. The permanent lockers in the adult women’s locker room will remain the same.
  • All the doors will be replaced-shower, toilet, and entry/exit doors.
  • Updated ceiling tiles and grid in the front women’s locker room.
  • New towel storage unit in the front women’s locker room.

We are excited to provide our members with a fresh, contemporary look in this area. We value your continued business and appreciate your support.
