Working "Upstream" to Prevent Adverse Childhood Experiences
(ACEs) - Professionals in many fields are
working to address the effects of
adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), which have been shown to increase risk for a wide range of problems. One of these adverse experiences is child abuse and/or neglect, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates has been experienced by at least 1 in 7 US children in the past year. If we work further "upstream," we may prevent many traumatic events from occurring.

The Alberti Center is seeking an
Associate Director and Associate Professor/Advanced Assistant Professor. This is an exciting opportunity to provide leadership in understanding, preventing, and intervening with bullying abuse and school violence at an AAU institution. Scholarly
interests may include, but are not limited to, creating positive, safe, and inclusive schools and reducing bullying of marginalized groups. I feel hopeful that I can implement what I have learned today into a school I work in in the future. I think it was a good idea to have a face-to-face portion of this training because it brought in new ideas/thoughts on the problems of bullying/harassment.

Alberti Center Annual Conference
|
The Alberti Center Annual Conference took place this year on Tuesday, October 2 to kick off National Bullying Prevention month. Keynote Speaker, Dr. Yolanda Flores Niemann spoke on
Inclusive Schools and Communities: Identifying and Intervening with Microaggressions.

Afternoon breakout sessions continued the discussion by addressing microaggressions towards the LGBTQ community, people with disabilities,
Speaking up at School, and a program called

Early Career Award

The Alberti Center offers an annual early career award competition in  support of our mission to reduce bullying abuse in schools and in the community by contributing knowledge and providing evidence-based tools to effectively change the language, attitudes and behaviors of educators, parents, students and society. We are happy to announce the
2018 Early Career Award Recipient,
Stephanie A. Godleski, PhD, an individual who has made exemplary scholarly contributions to the field of bullying abuse prevention and conducted research that has the potential to influence practice and policy.
Dr. Godleski is an assistant professor in the Department of Psychology at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). She has been at RIT since fall 2015. Her areas of expertise are within clinical and developmental psychology. Her research focuses on developmental pathways to risk and resilience, particularly within early development from pregnancy to early childhood. In particular, she is interested in how parent and family influences (e.g., parental substance use, discipline) impact the development of aggressive thoughts and behaviors in childhood.

Dr. Amanda Nickerson Receives Prestigious Academic Award
|
Dr. Amanda Nickerson, director of the Alberti Center, was recently recognized for her work with the UB Exceptional Scholars - Sustained Achievement Award. She received this award at the Fall 2018 Celebration of Faculty and
Staff Academic Excellence Ceremony on
November 1 at the UB North Campus.
The Exceptional Scholar Award for Sustained Achievement was created by the University at Buffalo in 2002 to honor outstanding professional
achievement that has been focused on a particular body of work over a number of years. This award was created to recognize an unprecedented accomplishment in a senior scholar's career, distinguishing a body of work of enduring importance that has gone beyond the norm in a
particular field of study. Congratulations Amanda!

The Alberti Center recently recognized embrace Western New York (WNY) for their continued high-level sponsorship and support of both the annual conference and special events hosted by the center. President Jeffrey Platt accepted a plaque of recognition on behalf of the organization. embraceWNY is a local, non-profit organization comprised of gay and straight members of the community. Their Board works hard to fulfill its mission.
