Day-by-Day...A Note from our Executive Director
|
Nothing can quite match the joy we feel when a family moves out of the Dorothy Day House and into their own home again. After months and months of struggle, the parents and children feel like there is space in their being for new hope and
new dreams. We all rejoice!
Of course, there is always a tinge of sadness when a family moves, too. The staff and volunteers have built relationships with the children and parents. We have invested ourselves in making sure that every day is a better day for them. And then they are gone.
Happily, most of our families choose to stay in touch with us. They text us, send pictures, stop by for visits....and we are always glad to see their continuing success.
As each family moves, we prepare ourselves for the next family that God will send our way. And we begin again....

What's ahead?
Standing at the front door of Loretta's House, we can see Joseph's House (1161 Peabody) right across the street. If all goes as planned, we will begin renovation of that house in early 2019, with plans to accept families by Fall of that year. It is exciting to see our Dorothy Day Village take shape before our eyes!
Who would have ever suspected that Loretta's House would be so beautiful? We began with a house that looked like it needed to be torn down, but with the help of a great architect and Montgomery Martin Contractors, the house was salvaged and brought back to life. We know that the same thing can happen with Joseph's House. Stay tuned for regular updates on our progress....

Accepting new families in Loretta's House and enjoying the presence and work of new staff members are constant reminders that our Capital Campaign is going well! Thus far we have raised $2.2 million of our $5 million goal and we have our sights set on raising an additional $1.5 million very soon.
That next $1.5 million will allow us to renovate Joseph's House (1161 Peabody), hire another house manager, hire a part-time maintenance person and increase our bookkeeper position to full-time. Of course, some of those funds will be used for the operation of all our houses and the support of all our families.
We are counting on you, our supporters, to help us reach the next goal. Please tell your friends and neighbors about the Dorothy Day House and our ministry to homeless families.

We have been chosen by MemPops as their charity of choice for
the month of June. We will be receiving all the donations collected at their stores during the mo
nth.

It was in early February that we first announced that Lucy J's Bakery was opening a kiosk in Crosstown Concourse. Under the direction of Josh Burgess, the bakery now employs two former DDH residents and is planning to hire more DDH residents/former residents in preparation for the opening of a permanent space in Crosstown before the end of the summer.
As announced earlier, the bakery offers "pay-what-you-can" coffee and the proceeds from that coffee come to the Dorothy Day House. We recently received a check from the bakery for $835.76.
Many people have already discovered the wonderful sweets offered at Lucy J's.
Even if you are not in the vicinity of Crosstown, remember that Lucy J's takes orders by phone (230-0093) Please contact them when you need a cake, pie, cupcakes, croissants, oatmeal pies or other goodies for a special occasion.

Our thanks to Judy and Paul Gray for their years of dedicated service on our DDH Ministry Team.
As part of the original group that founded the DDH, they began their work with us in 2003. Through the years they have played an important part in making the Dorothy Day House what it is today.
Now,
fifteen years later
, they are leaving active work on the Ministry Team, but we will be counting on them for their prayer support.

Jacqueline launched her non-profit career in 1998 at LeMoyne-Owen College. She used her strengths in program design and implementation, leadership development, relationship-building and organizational administration in various roles at The American Cancer Society, Dress for Success Memphis and The Women's Foundation for a Greater Memphis. Her final position was Director of Programs at Leadership Memphis.
Jacqueline's educational background includes a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management from
LeMoyne
-Owen
College
, 200-hr yoga teacher certification and life coach certification. She is currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Health and Wellness Coaching with a concentration in Herbal Studies.
In June 2017 Jacqueline transitioned careers to fully embrace her calling as a healer and holistic health practioner.
As a practicing yogi, 200-hr. certified yoga teacher and essential oils educator, her passion is guiding and supporting others to improved health and well-being through education, awareness and behavior change.
Jacqueline is mom to three amazing sons Jeremy, Frederick and Joshua. This nature-lover enjoys delicious cuisine, drinking wine, theater, live music and traveling with her fiancée Roz.

Inaugural Memphis
Chicken and Beer Festival
Our Friends at IHeart Media have chosen the Dorothy Day House as their charity of choice for this year's Inaugural Memphis Chicken & Beer Festival. We look forward to seeing everyone inside the Liberty Bowl Stadium on Saturday, August 11th, from 4 pm - 8pm. Tickets are now on sale at

Each last Tuesday of the month, we host a Lunch and Learn event. It is an opportunity for people who are unfamiliar with the DDH to hear about our ministry to homeless families, tour the house, and enjoy a free lunch.
Our next Lunch and Learn sessions are Tuesday, July 31st and August 28th.

| "Sunday at Six" is a casual opportunity for volunteers to serve at the DDH. This ministry was formed by prayer, and we feel it is essential to provide an occasion where we can come together and express our compassion and concern for issues affecting our community. We gather with volunteers, board members, donors, DDH families, and friends at 6:00pm. We pray around 6:20 and then enjoy a dessert that is brought by a volunteer. The evening wraps up around 7pm. Come as you are, bring a friend, bring your family, and children are welcome. | Each Monday, the Dorothy Day House has a family supper provided by individuals, families, or small groups. Volunteers have an opportunity to provide a simple meal and hopefully join us to enjoy time around the dining room table. Event starts at 5:30pm and usually ends around 7pm. Our Mission
Rooted in the tradition of the Gospels and inspired by the vision and passion of Dorothy Day and the Catholic Worker Movement, the Dorothy Day House of Hospitality provides temporary housing and support services for homeless families in Memphis, TN. Working with other local agencies, staff members and volunteers provide families in need with a safe environment and the means to re-establish their independence. All guests are welcomed as Christ with no discrimination.
