As we are getting closer to the move in date at our new campus on 3501 Southmore, we wanted to make sure our students and families are aware of the new parking policies for the campus. There will be NO street parking around the Southmore campus. This year, we have quite a few students who drive to school but do not park in the student lot. Next year, that will not be an option. We have plenty of parking spaces on campus to accommodate all of our students! In order for students to park on campus next year, students will need to:
  1. Complete the student parking application
  2. Pay the student parking fee
  3. Provide proof of insurance, with the student listed as an approved driver on the vehicle
Without that documentation, students will not be allowed to drive to school. We appreciate your support in getting that documentation taken care of this summer in order to ensure that all drivers have the appropriate paperwork to park on campus at the beginning of the school year!

Last week, on Wednesday, students Kai Page, Ben Barnes, Ruby Shampine, and James McCready competed at the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) Energy Challenge. They created an augmented reality app that supports offshore platform machinery.  The keynote speaker at the event was meteorologist Travis Herzog from ABC 13.  The students explained their project work and networked with industry professionals.  Afterward, they ate lunch in the BP Suite.

As the end of the year approaches, many Energy students are preparing their summer plans. Thanks to  DiscoverU, HISD, and other resources, students have been able to find summer programs. Many of the programs that students are learning with organizations such as the National Hispanic Institute (NHI), Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE), EMERGE, and  Lazarus Energy Empowerment Program (LEEP). These programs aim to build leadership, inform students of college life, and immerse them into new cultures. Energy is proud to say that students have received over $16,000 in scholarship money to cover the programs and are raising money via GoFundMe to assist with additional costs. Destinations include New York, California, Peru, and Spain. Look above to see where Energy students will be going this summer and go here to discover more about who is participating in these various programs.  It's not too late to find a summer program for you! Additionally, if you have been accepted into an FLO and have not filled out the acceptance form, please speak with Ms. Andrews.

Congratulations to Litzy Ramirez, Natani Roberts-Williams, and Luis Villegas for moving on to the semifinals in the Clean Tech Competition! Last cycle, these juniors from the Bazinga Cohort wrote a group essay that solves a specific problem associated with climate change. To write the essay, they synthesized material learned from their Engineering, English, Environmental Science, and US History classes. They also worked with Rice University students, industry mentors, and Houston Biodiesel Owner, Chris Powers, to amplify their essay and receive professional guidance. In the end, they were one of the many high school and college teams from over 39 countries who registered to be in the Clean Tech Competition. Their hard work on their green tech idea and exceptional writing skills impressed the judges. Now, they have a chance to be finalists and travel to Stony Brook University on July 12th to showcase their idea, where they could potentially win up to 10,000 dollars! Way to go Litzy, Natani, and Luis!

On Friday, April 4th, the National Honor Society (NHS) community held officer elections for the 2018-2019 school year. In the words of the former president, Elizabeth Kim, to be an NHS officer "is to be attentive, ready to serve your community, keeping your word, and committing to your position." For the first time, the NHS officers are composed of an all-female team. They stated, "We are ready to improve our community and continue the legacy of community work we have done."

Congratulations to the new 2018-2019 NHS chapter officers!

This quarter, the sophomore Nexus Novas cohort has been working on their second PBL, in which they are designing subscription boxes to educate elementary and middle schoolers about colonies of the past. The boxes will contain a robot, a booklet, and a chemistry component, all related to each group's chosen colony. Students designed and programmed a robot to perform a task specific to their colony and built them last week. Accompanying the robot in their subscription boxes is a detailed assembly guide, specifically formulated for children to understand. The chemistry component is an experiment that relates both to the group's colony and aligns with a chosen Texas Essential Knowledge (TEK). For example, the Colonial New Zealand group included a "weather potion" that can be used to predict the weather and describes New Zealand's proneness to natural disasters. Ultimately, the project is going well and has an exhibition scheduled for May 24th.
This week, we would like to shine a spotlight on freshman Biology teacher, Mrs. Alexander. In her previous four years at Energy, she has also taught AP Seminar, AP Research, and AP Biology. Before becoming a teacher at Energy, Mrs. Alexander graduated from Texas Tech with a Bachelor of General Studies and completed graduate research in Environmental Science at Stephen F. Austin (SFA) State University. While completing her graduate research, she worked at the
SFA Mast Arboretum , which is a 10-acre arboretum and botanical garden on campus. During her time in college, she interned as a hunting guide and learned how to skin a squirrel. Mrs. Alexander has also worked as a nursing assistant in a retirement home and an event coordinator for weddings and concerts. After graduate school, she volunteered at the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) for two years and investigated the impact of invasive apple snails on Texas rice and crawfish. While at LCRA, Mrs. Alexander received a grant from LCRA to co-found the Texas Tech at Junction Outdoor School with three other teachers. It was at this moment that Mrs. Alexander says she realized her desire to become a teacher. Currently, she enjoys doing needlepoint, camping, hiking, spending time with her dog, Jasper, and making pillows, jams, and jellies.

Ms. Alexander's Words of Wisdom:
"Don't worry so much about the 'should haves' in your past, but focus on what you can and will do in the future. All you can do is learn from your mistakes and make better choices."
