Experiential learning through professional engagement continues to be the primary objective of the Brantley Center. As always, we support travel, student competitions and programs on campus. During the last year, we expanded our reach through three initiatives to provide a larger group of students the opportunity to engage. EXPANDING OUR REACH

Appalachian's Risk Initiative for Student Engagement (RISE) is a student research-teaching-learning opportunity through which teams conduct research on current trends and issues. A one of a kind endeavor, recent projects include research on cyber and supply chain risk, employment practices liability and the #metoo movement, emerging and evolving risks, and NC flood financing.

Building Insurance Talent (BIT)
Under the direction of Dr. Jamie Parson and in collaboration with the Brantley Board of Advisors Recruitment/
Diversity committee a Mentorship program was launched in February. With the guidance of a detailed outline of the program for all the participants ten mentor/mentee relationships have been established and are overseen and monitored by Dr. Parson and members of the committee.

Women in Financial Services
The Women in Financial Services Initiative is a collaboration between the Brantley Risk & Insurance Center and the Department of Finance, Banking & Insurance that works to identify and develop high potential female Appalachian students for careers in financial services. Drs. Brandy Hadley andLori Medders have coordinated Women in Finance industry panels, provided finance and insurance workshops for the campus student community, and exposed the women of Appalachian to Financial Services opportunities, both in and outside of North Carolina.

In keeping with the Walker College of Business mission statement to "deliver transformational educational experiences that prepare and inspire students to be ethical, innovative and engaged business leaders who positively impact our community, both locally and globally," the Brantley Center sponsored the following opportunities for RMI & Actuarial Science students.

London Study Abroad Program
|
Fifteen Appalachian State University students traveled to London during the university's spring break, March 2-9, as part of a Walker College of Business international markets course.
The travelers visited insurers and brokers including
Markel, Bell & Clements, THB, AXA XL, Guy Carpenter, Beazley and Lloyd's of London.
Students developed connections and learned how insurers provide coverage for losses arising from perils such as terrorism, cyber attacks and catastrophes, as well as event cancellation coverages that insure entertainers being unable to perform.

Bermuda Study Abroad Program
|
Nine Appalachian RMI & Actuarial Science students traveled to Bermuda on May 12-18 in another opportunity provided through the international markets course.
The students visited
Guy Carpenter, Allied World Claims, Nephila Capital, RenaissanceRe, JRG Re and AIG
to analyze the transfer of risk from businesses operating in this country, through the insurance market mechanism, to ultimate risk bearers abroad.

A Day in the Life of a Renewal Workshop
On Friday, February 8, 2019 sixty RMI seniors and eight Industry representatives participated in the highly popular “Day in the Life of a Renewal” workshop on campus. The workshop is structured to give students a hands on perspective of the inner workings of an insurance renewal.

PriSim Agency Competition
|
Six students from Appalachian State University participated in the 2019 PriSim Agency Management Competition, which is presented by the national InVEST Board. Eight university teams from across the country participated in running a simulated insurance agency for four weeks.

Spencer-RIMS Management Challenge
Appalachian's Risk Management Challenge team will advance to the next round in the 2019 event in Boston. The challenge is an 9 month long competition where university teams develop and present a risk management analysis addressing the company’s major issues.

Two
Appalachian (RMI) majors, Charles Fisher and Christian Ferrara, were national finalists in an essay contest held by the Captive Insurance Companies Association (CICA) for their co-authored essay, “Alternative Risk Solutions: Captive Insurance for Cyber and Supply Chain Risk.”

ENGAGEMENT WITH THE INDUSTRY

Of the
seven objectives
of the Brantley Risk and Insurance Center the first is "involve students with the insurance industry." To that end the Brantley Center funds several opportunities that provide direct contact with the industry. Some are highlighted below:

Five Risk Management & Insurance majors braved the remnants of an ice storm and traveled to Atlanta to participate in the Atlanta RIMS Educational Conference February 21-22. This year’s theme “# Insurance: What will be Relevant in Tomorrow’s World?” was on point, as students attended sessions on industry hot topics such as building an effective cyber risk culture, the #Me Too effect for management liability, and the evolution of underwriting.

Six RMI and Actuarial Science Majors traveled to Middle Tennessee State University January 25-26, 2019 for the newly created Gamma Iota Sigma (GIS) Regional Conference platform. Students took advantage of opportunity to participate in a career fair, educational and hot topic sessions, keynote addresses, and alumni panels.

Sixteen RMI & Actuarial Science majors participated in the Spring 2019 RIMS Shadow Day in Charlotte on Friday, March 15. This annual event is sponsored by the Carolinas RIMS Chapter and takes place every spring. During Shadow Day the students were partnered with Charlotte area industry leaders to learn more about internships and professional opportunities within the Insurance industry in various roles such as Risk Management, Underwriting, Claims, Brokerage and Sales.

The Independent Insurance Agents of North Carolina (IIANC) continues their support of the Brantley Risk and Insurance Center with a gift of $70,000.
"Once again this year the IIANC is honored to continue its long-standing support of Appalachian State and the Brantley Risk & Insurance Center. Introducing talented students to the insurance industry and providing them with the support and financial resources needed for them to be successful remains a key strategic initiative of IIANC," said Knight. "All of us with the IIANC are honored to continue this long-standing partnership with Appalachian and the Brantley Center."

Art Lyon Scholarship Created
|
A new scholarship has been established through the Brantley Risk and Insurance Center at Appalachian State University by individuals who wished to express their appreciation to Art Lyon for his mentorship and extensive contributions to the insurance industry.
The scholarship will help perpetuate a pipeline of talented young people entering the industry and will be awarded annually to a deserving student in the Risk Management & Insurance program at Appalachian State University.

Carolinas RIMS Chapter Continues Support
The Carolinas Risk Insurance Management Society (RIMS) has made another $15,000 financial contribution to the Appalachian State Risk Management & Insurance (RMI) program.
“All of us within the Appalachian RMI program and the Brantley Risk & Insurance Center are so grateful for the long-standing partnership with the Carolinas RIMS chapter,” adds Brantley Center Managing Director Dr. Marlett.
