THANK YOU CAPA!
By December 31, 2020, my time as CAPA President will end. I didn’t want to leave without saying how very proud to have worked with all the CAPA Board of Directors and Advisory Group. Even with challenging times, we accomplished successful events including CAPA 2020 Webinar Series and “Better Together” Event Celebration . Those achievements are the result of board members talents, and advisory support . You all have my deepest gratitude.
I’m excited knowing our incoming President, Pina Vyas, will lead CAPA to greater heights and successes. Good luck Pina!
Lastly, THANK YOU for the privilege to lead the organization and wish the best for CAPA in years to come.

|
|
This election cycle was a big success for the South Asian community featuring a record number of Indian American candidates running in key state and federal races across the country, as well as the first Indian American to be on a presidential ticket, in vice-presidential candidate Kamala Harris.
In our home state of Michigan, Indian American candidates that scored wins last month included: Ranjeev Puri was elected to 21st House District with a promise to help fight for a better Michigan, businessman/scientist Shri Thanedar for House 3rd District, and Padma Kuppa who was re-elected for House District 41. Representative Kuppa, an engineer by trade, was the first Indian immigrant and Hindu in the Michigan Legislature...

Building Resilience
Sook Wilkinson, Ph.D.
We can all learn to build resilience. American Psychological Association has Tips for Resilience in a Time of War. I’d reframe it as Tips for Resilience in a time of crisis.
Make Connections – keeping in touch with family, friends, and others. Connecting with people provides social support and strengthens resilience. Help yourself by helping others – assisting others in need, and volunteer work can be empowering. Maintain a daily routine – keeping up with your daily routine can provide you with a feeling of stability. Sticking with a routine can be comforting to your children as well. Take care of yourself – make time to eat, exercise, and rest properly. It’ll help you stay balanced and enable you to better deal with stressful times. Give yourself a “news” break – Limit your news intake to no more than an hour a day. It’s okay to turn off the TV and allow yourself to focus on non-crisis related things. Have a plan – Make a clear plan for how you, your family, and friends will respond and connect in the event of a crisis. Make a plan for your pets and a list of items you’ll need to take in an emergency. Prepare a security kit – Make sure you include things like a favorite book, or pictures of loved ones and their contact information. This’ll give you comfort and security...

Uplift Others
Through Creative Outlets
CAPA Marketing & Communications' chairman, Dan Moen, has been using media to uplift and amplify others, their experiences, and stories. Dan has three major projects he is currently working on. A podcast, a tv show, and a book! The recently launched podcast focuses on people having civil dialogue about heavy topics that impact us today. The tv show will focus on a wide diverse and inclusive cast, and focuses on a bi-racial Filipino and Black family during the mist of the pandemic. The book will be 30 stories from 30 different adoptees of color.
3rd Paradigm with Clarity & Nuance
The podcast has been recently launched on SoundCloud as wells as Spotify Podcasts and currently working on releasing it on all streaming platforms. Guests are invited to participate in a free panel style/round-table call from anywhere around the world and chat about heavy topics from racism, education, health including mental health, the pandemic, gender, orientations, and inner workings of the human mind. Guests have the option to participate anonymously with a fake name or themselves. Clarity & Nuance are the show's two main hosts and ask open ended questions for the panel to respond to. The show encourages those who disagree the most to participate.

Say NO to the Flu!
Say YES to the Flu Shot!
Mobile Flu Vaccination
On Saturday, November 21st and Sunday, December 6, 2020 the Center for Health Disparities Innovations and Studies, Eastern Michigan University partnership with Thai American Association of MI/TAAM provided Mobile flu vaccination at Wat Paknam Michigan/ BMC in Sterling Heights. We had families from different East Asian and Southeast Asian communities of Thai, Lao, Vietnamese and Bangladeshi, who came to be vaccinated. The families were very appreciative of this opportunity because there were volunteers who speak their native languages to assist and explain to them of the information provided regarding influenza. Also, the forms were translated in these languages, making it easier and less stressful to fill out. One of the families mentioned that when they go to other places, they are overwhelmed by a language barrier.
