Climate Reality Presentation
June 5
|
WHEN
: Tuesday, June 5, 7-9 PM (Snacks at 6:30 PM)
|
|
DETAILS
: Paula Clements, an Al Gore -trained Climate Reality Leader, will present a compelling presentation about the destructive impact of climate change.
With business as usual, we will see bad conditions get worse. The U.S. could see a 400% increase in extreme downpours alone by the end of the century!
Paula will include uplifting success stories of efforts to stop the damage to our planet. For example, in 2002 scientists predicted that solar energy would grow by one gigawatt every year by 2010 — but that goal was exceeded 75 times over by 2016! It is projected that by 2020, renewable energy will be the cheapest form of new-power generation across the globe. The images in this presentation are powerful and inspiring,

Debate on Draft County Operations Energy Strategy
|
In February of this year, Fairfax County staff presented a Draft County Operations Energy Strategy for consideration by the County’s Environment Committee. Unfortunately, the goals set forth in the Draft Energy Strategy were weak and the staff proposal did not provide funding options for consideration by the Board Members. As a result, the Great Falls Group filed initial comments on the Draft Energy Strategy on February 13 and more detailed comments on May 9.
If you would like to participate in future energy strategies please contact Norbert Pink at

Adopt-a-Highway Earth Day 2018
|
Ten volunteers gathered on Sunday, April 22, and picked up trash along Jones Branch Road in Tysons Corner to celebrate Earth Day. Sierra Club members and others have been picking up trash in this area for four years, and we just got our permit renewed for another three years. We celebrated our efforts and the Sierra Club Great Falls Group's name on two roadway signs with cake and mimosas. One of those attending and helping was Jennifer Kaye, a reporter/photographer for the
Connection
newspapers who photographed volunteers and our cake. The leftover cake was taken to engineers at VDOT the next day.

Learning About Sierra Club Hikes
Frank Wodarczyk, a long-time Sierra Club leader, gave a presentation about the SCPRO (Sierra Club Potomac Region Outings) on Tuesday, May 22, at the Oakton Library. He gave an excellent history of the Sierra Club and we discussed the type of hikes, what to bring and transportation options. We discussed the types of national and international hikes that are available. You can view Frank's
