Connecting the Dots

In this edition of Connecting the Dots, we are going to introduce a new feature. When I took this job almost five years ago, I was amazed at how many of our graduates have gone on to establish restaurants in our community. As the alumni manager, I have made it my business to hold meetings at these restaurants, and have worked to have class reunions held there as well.   I would encourage you to support all of our Rockets in their ventures, as this feature unfolds, if you know of any other restaurants that we should be supporting, please send me those names. Eventually, we will also be reporting on other businesses owned and operated by Rockets. But since I love food, I am starting with food. Our first restaurant in the feature is Urban Grill on Main. With a slogan of- Bacon Built this City, I knew where I had to start. I have been several times since it opened, but I did not know it was owned by a Rocket. Once that was brought to my attention, I made it a point to reach out to Betsy Wass Eicher from the Class of '75, and I went down to meet her and get the whole story.
Betsy was the only one from her family to attend McNicholas; everyone else went to Withrow. But when she came in the front doors, she felt like she belonged here. She developed some great friendships with Peggy Roth Sullivan, and Beth Byrnes Faber. I always make it a point to bring a yearbook with me, it always helps get the stories flowing! She worked in Mr. Boettger's office, passing out the detentions, and she really enjoyed working with him. And like almost every Rocket that has passed through the halls, she remembered Mr. Fanning fondly!

Alumni Awards - Call for Nominations

Last year, Archbishop McNicholas High School announced our new recognitions for alumni. It is now time to start thinking about deserving alumni for this year's awards. In conjunction with these awards, McNicholas also will host a special event on October 8, 2018, in the CafĂ© and Student Union where these awards will be presented. (Archbishop McNicholas was ordained a Dominican priest on October 10, 1901.) The following day, October 9, the recipients will be introduced to the  students at an all-school assembly.

Selection
The McNicholas community will have the opportunity to nominate for this awards, and the nomination form is now available. If you nominated someone last year, we still have his of her name on file. All three awards will be selected by a committee of school representatives.  Nominations are due by June 15, and the committee will announce its selections in July.

Awards
The Distinguished Alumni Award will be presented annually to one male and  one female McNicholas graduate who have honored McNicholas High School with their outstanding professional achievements, volunteer activities, and community-organization advocacy. These alumni have shared their affection for McNicholas and its community and have been shining examples of high moral and ethical standards and values learned at McNicholas High School.

The Full Stature Special Achievement Award will be presented to an alumni who exemplifies the ideals and mission of McNicholas High School and the Sisters of St. Joseph. It is presented to an individual in recognition of his or her accomplishments which bring honor to self and school and whose service, leadership, and concern for McNicholas support, strengthen, and exemplify the school's mission. This award is bestowed as a lifetime recognition and will not necessarily be presented annually.

Last Chance to Help set a McNicholas Record

Last school year, financial support from McNicholas Alumni was the number one reason we set a record for gifts to the Annual Fund when we reached $215,600.  With a little additional alumni support, we have a great chance of once again breaking the Annual Fund record. We are working very hard to reach $250,000, which would be a significant milestone for McNicholas High School.
Your Annual Fund gifts are a tremendous help to the operating budget of the school, as they help us to cover the gap between the monies brought in through tuition and the total cost of providing a great education to our students. If you have provided a gift to the Annual Fund for the 2017-2018 school year, we want to truly thank you for your support. If you have not yet shown your support for McNicholas High School with a gift to the Annual Fund, we really need your help. Your gift will go to work immediately in making a difference for our school.
It is easy to provide a gift to the Annual Fund. You may make an online gift by going to the school web-site. If you would like to make your gift with a check. Please make the check out to McNicholas High School and send it to the following address:
                                                      McNicholas High School
                                                     Attn: Mark Doran
                                                     6536 Beechmont Avenue
                                                     Cincinnati, Ohio 45236

Gifts of stock are also an excellent way to provide a gift. If you would like to discuss a stock gift, or have any other questions about the Annual Fund, please contact me either via email at  [email protected], or call me at (513) 231-3500 Ext. 5141.

Teachers, alumni share advice about vocations

Posted on April 23, 2018 in the McNicholas Milestone
By Isabella Daley

As the end of the 2017-2018 school year approaches at McNick, seniors finalize their college decisions and freshmen look forward to completing their first year of high school. While many students may be seeking advice about summer jobs or where to travel for vacation, several McNick teachers and alumni offer advice about a topic that considers the future beyond this summer: How should one discern their vocation?

Each person has a unique vocation

The students at McNick learn about vocations like the priesthood, married life, and consecrated religious life as well as the smaller vocations they are called to live out in their everyday lives. Tony Losekamp, who graduated from McNick in 2013 and is currently finishing his first year in the seminary, said the common vocation among all people is that "everyone is called to follow Jesus." Losekamp added that there are a variety of vocations, saying "not everyone is called to be a priest."

McNick family opens new Italian restaurant

Posted on May 7, 2018 in the McNicholas Milestone
By Rachel Jeffries

Naples, Italy, has arrived in Cincinnati. The family of McNick sophomore Maggie Nunner recently opened their family restaurant, Joe's Pizza Napoli, on April 24. It has always been a dream of Joe and Angie Nunner, Maggie's parents, to share Joe's family recipes with others. The restaurant is located at 507 Chamber Dr. in Milford.  Maggie is also the granddaughter of Tom Habegger '59.

Joe's Pizza Napoli is centered around a Neapolitan wood burning oven from Naples, Italy, in which the pizzas are cooked. The oven is placed so customers can see the pizzas being prepared and cooked. The menu consists of pepperoni rolls and polpette as appetizers; House, Spring, and Caprese salad options; red and white pizza with choice of toppings; classic, sausage and ricotta calzones, as well as a Nutella calzone for dessert. A full menu is available  online here.

Alumni Connectors Program

Ken Serger '69, Pam McGuire Stewart '66, and Katherine Hayes

We would like to thank Pam McGuire Stewart '66, and Ken Serger '69 for joining us to speak to Ms. Hayes' history classes on May 3. Her classes are studying the protests associated with the Vietnam War. Pam, a self-identified hippie who attended Woodstock, participated in anti-war and civil rights protests. She also built a tee pee and lived in the woods of Vermont with her husband. Ken was a freshman at Kent State when the shootings took place. He mentioned what it was like to have a tank in the parking lot next to his fraternity house, and really brought the story to life for the kids. It is our mission in the McNicholas Alumni Association to connect our past to our present. Have you ever been at an historical event? Would you be willing to come in and share your life experiences? We could always use career mentors and speakers. If you are interested in telling your story, or assisting our current students, consider signing up in our Alumni Connectors program.

Alumni gather to make gifts for the graduates

As the Alumni Association Board has been meeting, we have been developing more ways in which alumni can connect with the students.  This year after the students graduate, the Alumni Association will host a reception for them in the courtyard, in front of the Convent. As well as providing drinks, and light refreshments, some of the members decided it would be a nice touch to make a little gift for the seniors.  So on May 10, several gathered in the Heritage Room of the convent to make ornaments to pass out.
This effort was led by Sr. Judi Keehnen '59, Bridgette Moran Kahermanes '66, and Patti Benigni Dold '71.  Helping them out that day was Gail Cassini '58, Shirley Timberman Brigel '59, Linda Keehnen Connor '60, Peggy Lehane Ramey '60, Lennie Feldkamp Blasing '66, Donna Warner McDonald '66, Barb DuBrul Sexton '66, and Pam McGuire Stewart '66.  Thank you to all who gave your time and talent to make this present to help our seniors remember their days at MHS.

Baseball Honors Seniors and Alumni

Drew Schmidt '06, Zach Schmidt '99, Pat O'Brien '99, Darak Gardner '99, Steve Brink '99, Jason Helmes '99, Dave Kaiser '99, Steve Jostworth '98, Steve jasper '99, Andy Ey '98, Eddie Dreyer '98, Coach Willy Corbett, Coach Brian Gatio '94, and Coach Barry Schmidt '74.

On Saturday, May, 5 the Varsity Baseball team honored its seniors, the 1998 State Championship team, and welcomed back over 35 baseball alumni. The three coaches and thirteen members of the 1998 state championship team returned to commemorate and celebrate the 20th anniversary of capturing McNick's first baseball state title. State winning pitcher Steve Jostworth threw out the honorary 1st pitch, and the '98 team was introduced between the 4 and 5 innings. A good time was had by all stretching a few stories along the way. From the looks of it some of the team members could still stretch a double into a single!

Along with the state team, over twenty other former players attended the event. Bob Harrod '57 was the oldest baseball alumni. Present players and former players were able to make a connection and bring together the rich history of the past with the present. It is our hope to make this an annual event honoring former players and teams along with the seniors. Special thanks to all the parents and Coach Christmann '85 for making the day happen.

Alumni Softball played Varsity  Softball in charity game

On Sunday, May 6th, the Varsity Softball Team took on Softball Alumni from the classes of 2012 to 2017. The teams played a full, 7-inning game, while raising money for a good cause. The teams raised $244 for Women Helping Women, a charity that supports survivors of gender-based violence. In the end, the Alumni prevailed with 5-3 win over the varsity team. A special thanks go out to Signature Marketing, Doscher Candy Company, and Cassady/Schiller for helping sponsor this event.

Statement on lights

Archbishop McNicholas High School is looking forward to installing stadium lighting to enable our students to enjoy the full high school experience.    After working for the better part of a year with the City of Cincinnati, the Mt. Washington Community Council, and our neighborhood, we received zoning approval to install the stadium lights.    Unfortunately, a limitation of 20 nights per year was imposed which we believe was based upon misinformation given to the City.    More importantly, this limitation unduly restricts all of our teams that would like to make occasional use of the stadium at night which would include varsity football, boys' soccer, girls' soccer, boys' lacrosse, girls' lacrosse, boys' track-and-field, and girls' track-and-field.    Thus, we are presently appealing that restriction and are optimistic about achieving a more reasonable limitation.    The school will continue to remain sensitive to the interests of all concerned.
Time to start planning the 2018 Reunion Season
