The fund will support and encourage collaboration among nonprofits, businesses, governments, educational institutions and private philanthropic donors to promote actions that will have a beneficial effect on the health of the natural environment and local economy; support public awareness and public education about protecting the natural environment and the impact of public and private actions on the natural environment; and support the efforts of citizen engagement that helps improve and protect the natural environment.  It was established as an endowment and will therefore be a part of The Permanent Fund for Northern Virginia, forever benefiting our region's environment.

NationalFosterCareMonthNATIONAL FOSTER CARE MONTH
As May is National Foster Care Month, we want to take this opportunity to share the fact that the Community Foundation's "Our Children Fund" accepts applications on a rolling basis. The Our Children Fund provides "normalizing" items and experiences to children in the Fairfax County foster care system between the ages of birth and 17 years and young adults between the ages of 18 and 21 if permanency (return home, relative placement, or adoption) is not achieved and addresses their otherwise unmet medical, social, emotional, and education needs.

Melinda Merk
This interview is with  Melinda Merk, Partner at SageTrust Law Group, new Community Foundation Board Member, Business Women's Giving Circle (BWGC) member, and active philanthropist.

Melinda has a background in providing holistic multi-generational income and wealth transfer tax planning advice and estate and trust services to high net worth individuals, families, and business owners.

How does your work tie into your decision to join the Community Foundation board?
With the recent changes under the new tax law, donor advised funds and community foundations have become an even more important charitable giving and family legacy tool.  Establishing a fund with The Community Foundation provides access to local resources for charitable giving and ensures that the donated funds will benefit the local community.  Becoming a member of the Board was a natural next step to supporting and promoting the efforts and contributions of The Community Foundation of Northern Virginia.
Do you ever wonder what the future holds?

While it's impossible to know or control what happens in the future, you can have security about achieving your ultimate goals by making a plan. Planning is one way to create a secure future for you and your loved ones. With a good plan, you can rest easy knowing that your family will be well cared for and your property will pass to your intended beneficiaries.

In considering your plans for the future, you may not only be thinking about how to help your family and save on estate taxes but also how you might benefit our community. A bequest permits you to leave a lasting legacy and often provides valuable tax savings.

If you have any questions about leaving your lasting legacy, please  contact us. We work everyday with others who want to make a difference through their planned gift. We would be happy to share some examples and  answer any questions that you have.

Please let us know if you have already made a planned gift to the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia. We would like to thank you and recognize you for your gift.

September Innovation Breakfast: Reviving the Dream: Designing Technology for Social Wellbeing
September 13, 8 - 10:30 am
We are partnering with the WHEELS Global Foundation for this Innovation Breakfast Series event titled, "Reviving the Dream: Designing Technology for Social Wellbeing."   In the mid 20th Century, many believed emerging technologies would eradicate poverty, hunger, and sickness and build a more just and sustainable world.  Anything seemed possible! But in the intervening decades, technology took a sharp turn away from addressing social challenges. Today, that dream is being revived.  Across the globe, sustainable technologies are being developed and reimagined to help meet basic human needs, address social injustices, and create more balanced and prosperous communities. The WHEELS Global Foundation headquartered in Reston, VA, is on the forefront of this important work.  What is the opportunity for our community - for all communities -  to benefit, and what role does philanthropy play in promoting technology that advances social wellbeing?
