PRESENTATION

Approaching the Climate Crisis with Radical Curiosity

With the earth in crisis, it's easy to feel overwhelmed about our ability to make a difference. Yet the antidote for hopelessness is action. In honor of Earth Day, Debbie Raphael, Director of the San Francisco Department of the Environment, will share her thoughts on the importance of asking the right questions to help us identify the actions each of us can take that will maximize impact and heal the planet.

Presenter: Debbie Raphael , Director

Debbie Raphael is the Director of the San Francisco Department of the Environment and believes that cities can take bold action to address environmental harm. A scientist by training and public servant by profession, Debbie has spent more than 20 years working in government to ensure that everyone has an equal right to a safe and healthy environment. As Director, Debbie has led the most significant update to the City's recycling and composting program in over 15 years, the launch of an industry funded safe disposal program for unused medicines, and pioneering policies for rooftop solar panels and electric vehicle charging capacity in all new construction. In partnership with the Mayor, Board of Supervisors, and fellow City departments, Debbie has helped steer the City towards greater greenhouse gas emission reductions, including setting a new audacious goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Debbie is a frequent keynote speaker at international climate conferences and a national spokeswoman on environmental issues. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Biology from the University of California, Berkeley and a Master's egree in Physiological Plant Ecology from UCLA.

LEST WE FORGET

A project by Luigi Toscano

April 17 - May 19, 2019
San Francisco's Civic Center Plaza

LEST WE FORGET , a Holocaust remembrance project designed by German-Italian artist Luigi Toscano, is coming to San Francisco's Civic Center Plaza from April 17 - May 19, 2019. 78 large-scale photographs of Holocaust survivors honor individuals living in the United States, Israel, Germany, Ukraine, Russia, Austria, the Netherlands, and the Bay Area with dignified portraits. 15 of them were recently taken in San Francisco and the Bay Area. These pictures are at the center of the unique photographic installation, LEST WE FORGET and ensure that we do not forget the Holocaust and inspire us to fight hatred today.

LEST WE FORGET has been on view at the Mall in Washington D.C., the United Nations in New York City and Boston Common, as well as at prominent outdoor sites in Europe. Displaying the portraits in public spaces makes the exhibit accessible to everyone. Over 1 million people worldwide have seen it so far.

In conjunction with the photo exhibition, the Goethe-Institut San Francisco and our community partners will present numerous educational programs, film screenings at the San Francisco Public Library, a panel discussion, public tours and other events throughout San Francisco. .

The exhibit is presented by the Goethe-Institut San Francisco and the German Consulate General San Francisco, with heartfelt gratitude to Barbro and Bernard Osher for their generosity. With appreciation for the support of the Consulate General of Israel, the Consulate General of Italy, and the Italian Cultural Center. Special thanks to the San Francisco Arts Commission and San Francisco Recreation and Parks and numerous community partners.

Memorial Service - Saturday, May 4, 2019 at 6:00 pm
Congregation Sherith Israel
2266 California Street, San Francisco

It is with deep sadness that the San Francisco Interfaith Council (SFIC) has learned of the passing of Rabbi Lawrence "Larry" Raphael. At the time of his repose Rabbi Larry was completing his second term as an SFIC Board Member and the Council's Treasurer. His clergy and lay colleagues in San Francisco's diverse religious community will remember Rabbi Larry for his kindness, wisdom, and sincerely engaging interfaith spirit. In addition to his distinguished tenure as Dean of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, and subsequently Director of the Department of Adult Jewish Growth at the Union for Reform Judaism, Rabbi Larry will be remembered by the congregants of Congregation Sherith Israel for his many years of faithful service as their Senior Rabbi. We extend heartfelt condolences to both the Raphael family as well as the Congregation Sherith Israel community. We share the following memorial testimony issued by Congregation Sherith Israel and encourage all who are able to attend the memorial service being offered in the sanctuary (2266 California Street, San Francisco) on Saturday, May 4, 2019 at 6:00 pm. May his memory be a blessing!

Memorial Service
May 4, 6pm

Dear Sherith Israel Community,

We imagine that many of you shared our profound sense of loss upon learning of Rabbi Raphael's death. On May 4th at 6 pm we will come together as a community to celebrate his life.

Rabbi Larry, as he was affectionately known, was an engaging presence with a ready smile and a deep reserve of compassion. Rabbi Larry was also a gifted teacher and led this congregation through some of its most challenging moments.

We hope you will join us for this special evening of remembrance and celebration. May Rabbi Larry's memory be a blessing for us all.
