Palm Sunday
Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday; the celebration of Jesus entering Jerusalem. This has always been one of my favorite days in the church year going back to my days as a kid in Sunday school.

In the 1960s children were rarely seen in worship, especially in larger, urban churches like the one my family attended. On Palm Sunday all of the children's classes would go to the sanctuary between the morning worship services. Dr. Stone would stand in the pulpit and tell us the Palm Sunday story and then he would invite us to yell, "Hosanna." You can imagine the thrill of the minister telling you to be naughty in the sanctuary. We would all yell, "Hosanna." Then Dr. Stone would tell us to do it again even louder.

I still enjoy Palm Sunday, but it isn't as much naughty fun as it used to be. I still love to wave a palm branch and shout out a "Hosanna," but I get tripped up in the Biblical story. One technique in understanding a story in the Bible is to read the perspective through the eyes of the people within the story. For example, when Jesus heals a woman in a synagogue on the Sabbath, the reaction is different for the woman who was healed, her friends, the synagogue officials, the disciples, and Jesus.

The Palm Sunday story lends itself to multiple perspectives of: the disciples, the crowd, the Jewish officials who are watching, the Roman officials who are watching, and Jesus.

I can imagine the disciples thought, "It's about time he took his rightful place." The crowds may have been mocking the Roman governor of the region who would come to Jerusalem during the Passover, to ensure that the peace was kept, riding a white horse and surrounded by all of the pomp of a military parade. The Roman and Jewish officials might have had the identical reaction, "We don't want anyone to stir up trouble this week." I am most curious and confused by what Jesus felt about this peasant parade. Did he intend to mock Rome? Was he presenting an alternative form of leadership to Rome, which ruled by the strength of the army? Was Jesus offering the rule of love/

This Sunday I will dive into this story once again. I invite you to come along and imagine the excitement of the crowd and the worry of the Romans. Grab a palm branch, wave it around and shout Hosanna!

Clothes Closet Collection this Sunday
As you are getting ready for Parkway's annual rummage sale, please remember that clothing will not be accepted for the sale.  However,  El Divino Salvador's congregation will be glad to have shoes and clothing for their Clothes Closet.  The collection date is this Sunday, April 14.  Please look for the container in the narthex.

Thank You Parkway
During my days of recovery, I have been so grateful for the many prayers, cards, visits, gifts of food and the love of my Parkway Presbyterian family. Thank you all.
Much love,

One Great Hour of Sharing, Palm Sunday | April 14th

Click here to watch a 2019 One Great Hour of Sharing video.

Lent is traditionally a season of fasting and prayer. During this time, Christians pay close attention to spiritual disciplines that deepen our understanding of what God is doing in our lives and in the world. As a church, we spend time together hearing about and praying for the ministries of compassion and justice done through our support of One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS).

Jesus' ministry was among those who were most vulnerable. He preached good news to the poor and release to the captives. One Great Hour of Sharing helps us share this same good news to those same vulnerable people in our world today: those who are hungry, who are suffering from disaster, who are dealing with oppression and injustice in society. Every gift made to this offering will meet the needs of people through outreach programs of the PC(USA). We know about the impact of these programs first-hand through our work with Presbyterian Disaster Assistance. On Palm Sunday, April 14th, we will receive this offering. Don't forget to bring back your fish banks, too!
Endowment Funds and Grant Applications
The Parkway Presbyterian Church Endowment Fund annually awards grant funds in three areas: education, benevolences, and capital improvements. These funds are distributed roughly in thirds to each designated area. This year the Endowment Committee has nearly $12,000 available for distribution.

Grant applications are available from the church office. Applications should be completed and returned to the church office by April 30th. A Distribution Task Force will make a recommendation to the Session. The Session will vote on the distribution of funds at its May meeting and the funds will be distributed thereafter.

Schedule:
April 16 Lent Ch 6 and Conclusion

The PCHAS, Presbyterian Children home, likes to give a gift to
the moms that they serve for Mother's Day.  They were thinking
about toiletries for this year.  I think this would be a good mission project for our group.  Can you all pick up some shampoo, lotion, soap or whatever else would make a nice gift to a mom for mother's day?  Let's do this in the next couple weeks and have it complete by mid-April.

Request from the Worship Committee
Parkway Presbyterian Church is asking for proposals for centerpieces for the Communion Table. Proposals will be reviewed by the Worship committee for size and theological appropriateness.  Please submit your proposals to the church office by
June 1, 2019.

Mark Your Calendars for the Bloodmobile!

The bloodmobile will be parked outside the church ready to receive donations before and after Sunday school and worship. You need to bring a photo I.D. to participate. No need to sign up. Please help us give the gift of life.

Starting May 5th You Can Drop Off Rummage Items
Time for spring cleaning, decluttering, and getting more useful space in our homes.   Please donate your usable or re-usable items to Parkway for the Rummage Sale Fund Raiser.

Children's Fellowship
Sundays, 4:30  - 6 PM Fellowship Hall (Dinner $1)
Children ages 4 years through 5th grade are invited for music with Mrs. Joyce, activities with a great team of adult sponsors, and dinner together to wrap it up. Whether you're a fellowship regular, or want to join us for the first time, all are welcome. See you then!

Acolytes
Acolytes have a l ong history in the church. They perform the very important function to bring the light of God into the sanctuary at the beginning of each worship service and carry the light of God out into the world at the end of each service.  Would your child be willing to serve?  Please   click here   to  sign up to commit to dates for service.  It is a great way to be involved in their church!
