Alumni Panel on April 9 and Wisconsin AmeriCorps Info Fest on April 11

Serve Wisconsin will be hosting two events in Milwaukee this April to provide opportunities for people to learn more about AmeriCorps through meeting with AmeriCorps alumni and representatives from AmeriCorps programs from throughout Wisconsin. Both events are open to everyone who has ever considered service work in any capacity that would like to discover how the AmeriCorps experience may be an opportunity for them now or in the future.

The first event is on April 9 from 12-2 pm at Stone Creek Coffee, where AmeriCorps alumni will be sharing their stories about their service in AmeriCorps and how the experience has helped to shape their lives.

The second event is the Wisconsin AmeriCorps Info Fest from 10am-2pm on Thursday, April 11 on the Marquette University campus in the Memorial Union. Representatives from approximately twenty programs will be available to answer questions regarding national service opportunities and how the AmeriCorps experience can impact both the communities being served and the members themselves.
Farm to School leads session at Health and Hunger Summit 2019

Nineteen AmeriCorps Farm to School members participated in the Health and Hunger Summit 2019 conference in the Wisconsin Dells this March. At the conference, the members hosted a session titled "Strengthening Farm to School Initiatives" where they hosted a panel of school food service directors. As part of this session, the Farm to School members asked the school food service directors questions regarding the challenges that they face with the procurement of fresh, local foods for use in school meals and how the AmeriCorps Farm to School program can help assist them in overcoming these obstacles. During their service throughout the year, the members of the AmeriCorps Farm to School program, which is administered by the Department of Public Instruction, introduce fresh, local, sustainably produced food to students and provide hands-on nutrition education to improve childhood nutrition and increase the amount of local produce in the school lunch program.
Guest Teacher Collaborations during TFA Week 2019

From March 18-22, Teach for America - Milwaukee held its annual community engagement event, TFA Week. During TFA Week, leaders from a variety of fields joined members in the classroom, serving as guest teachers for a day. Together, 7 guest teachers and 7 members collaborated on lessons in which guest teachers shared their stories and lessons from their career, impacting over 150 students. Some lessons and activities students participated in included: youth leadership (students created a three-step action plan to address an issue they care about), character and personal identity (students participated in an activity and discussion on values most important to them) and gratitude (students painted portraits for a special, giving individual in their lives).

One of the participants this year was Jim McLaughlin, AmeriCorps and TFA alumnus, who shared about his work as a program officer at the United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County to students at Milwaukee College Prep 38th Street. Jim also worked with students on a lesson that helped students understand the states of matter, including having the students create energizing dances that mimic the three states of matter: gas, liquid, and solid.
