Join the Berea College Music Department for a performance on the John Courter Carillon by Joey Brink, visiting Carillonneur from the University of Chicago.
Joey Brink is the sixth University Carillonneur at the University of Chicago, where he performs on the 72-bell Rockefeller Memorial Carillon and directs a carillon studio of twenty students. He serves on the board of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America and co-chairs the Johan Franco composition committee to promote new works for carillon.
Brink began his carillon studies at Yale University with Ellen Dickinson in 2007; graduated with greatest distinction from the Royal Carillon School in Mechelen, Belgium in 2012; and studied further with Geert D'hollander at Bok Tower Gardens in 2015. He received first prize at the International Queen Fabiola Carillon Competition in Mechelen in 2014, and has toured North America and Europe extensively as a performer. Brink is regularly a recitalist at congresses of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America and the World Carillon Federation, most recently as a soloist with the Barcelona Municipal Symphonic Band in June 2017. He performed the inaugural recital at Salisbury University in September 2017. He released his first album, "Letters from the Sky", alongside his performance at Chicago's Ear Taxi Festival, in October 2016.
Brink is an award-winning composer for carillon; his works have been described as "impressionistic", "shimmering", and of a "quiet hypnotic power" - Chicago Classical Review. He is additionally interested in the design of practice carillons, and has published and presented on his work to improve the functionality and affordability of practice instruments. He and his partner, Vera Wünsche Brink, perform duet carillon recitals, and are avid outdoor enthusiasts, spending their free time camping, hiking, and canyoneering.

This hands-on, "make your own mala" workshop will explore the body's energy along the chakra system and the history & tradition of mala beads in meditation and prayer. Rebecca Aghamiri is a yoga teacher, mala-maker, doctoral intern in clinical psychology, and owner/creator of Bodhi Malas. She loves helping people to connect with themselves and create intentional lives through meditation, intention-setting, and art by traveling around central KY to teach the art of mala making in the community. Rebecca sees the mala as an intentional act of creation that can bring us closer to ourselves and serve as healing tools for meditation, creativity, and intentionality.

Ever have an idea for a story that strikes out of nowhere? But what then? How does one take an idea and turn it into a story? And after a story is written, how can we revise it to make it the best it can be? And how does one submit a story and get it published?
We will address the essential elements of fiction that make stories succeed: inspiration, prewriting, developing character, plot, vivid description. Instructor Shaun Turner will point out the usual mistakes that cause a story to fall flat. He will also show participants the best resources for finding suitable publishers to get their world out into the world!
This workshop is designed for writers of all levels and backgrounds. The first workshop will deal with pre-writing strategies, the second with essentials of short fiction (and revision), and the third will be designated to submitting and publication success.

Tickets are available at www.bereafarmersmarket.org, or in person at the Berea Farmers Market (416 Chestnut St in Berea) on Tuesdays from 4-7 and Saturdays from 9-1. When reserving your ticket, please let them know whether you'd prefer the omnivorous or vegetarian alternatives. A minimum donation of $75 per person is suggested with proceeds benefiting the Berea Farmers Market. A guided tour will begin at 5:20, with dinner being served at 6:00. This is a full evening, slow food experience, so please anticipate being there for several hours. Purchase your ticket early, as this is an intimate event limited to 20 guests.

Juxtaposition by Ray Papka

This exhibit features mixed media artist Ray Papka whose works combine assemblage, encaustic painting, use of books as substrates and a wide array of intricate embellishments. Papka generates layers of information and mystery from his observations, events and the influence of science in his life.
With degrees in zoology, chemistry, anatomy and neuroscience,Papka brings the discipline of science and his ability to hone in on a subject directly to his artwork. Beginning with an idea, he selects objects from his vast collection and builds upon this idea with objects, layers of wax, pigment and imagery.
Papka's background, travels and experiences have been wide and varied. He has taught at numerous universities in the U.S. including 10 years at the University of Kentucky, as well as Universities in Denmark and Hungary.
Papka's intellectual process influences how he creates his artwork.
"He is a deep thinker," states journalist Austyn Gaffney, "and he works through his own thoughts, memories, hopes and fears when he creates his pieces."
Papka states, "From my early childhood I have been fascinated with books and unusual objects. My love of books influenced my decision to recycle them in an altered form and I continually utilize themes involving text."
Show & Tell: Demonstrating 15 Years

The Kentucky Artisan Center celebrates 15 years in 2018, and this exhibit recognizes the contributions of over 30 artists who have shared their talent through demonstrations. The Center's Artist Demonstration Program brings the creative process to life for visitors each Saturday as artists share their skill, talent and knowledge with visitors. Exhibiting artists in this exhibit have all demonstrated at the Center for eight or more years.
The Kentucky Artisan Center has created this exhibit to acknowledge the generous, educational efforts of these talented artists during this 15th Anniversary year.
Saturday Tours and Demonstrations

- Caroline Zama, of Louisville, will demonstrate how she creates her whimsical and sculptural pottery from 10:30am to 3:30pm.
Zama works entirely with slabs of clay that she then textures and draws upon. Colorful glazes and underglazes decorate and highlight her small clay birds, houses, mugs and plates - and she often adds a bird - as her business is named Star Bird Pottery!

tudio potter Martha Puckett, of Louisville, will demonstrate porcelain pottery on the wheel from 10:30am to 3:30pm.
Puckett creates functional wares for the kitchen and her blue dragonfly decoration is distinctive. Come watch her throw porcelain.
July 21- Three members of the Berea Welcome Center Carvers will be on hand to demonstrate their individual carving techniques and talk with visitors from 10:30am to 3:30pm.
These Central-Kentucky artisans demonstrate on the third Saturday of every month at the Kentucky Artisan Center.
July 28-
David Waltz, of Columbia, will sculpt figures from clay from 10:30am to 3:30pm.
A former schoolteacher, Waltz is a functional potter as well as a sculptor, using clay to create strong forms.

Brett Ratliff & John Haywood- Folk masters Brett Ratliff and John Haywood team up for a night of fiery bluegrass and Americana goodness, drawing upon East Kentucky's rich music traditions to speak to a new generation.
Called "the best banjo balladeer in the eastern Kentucky style of old-time music" by Dom Flemons, co-founder of the GRAMMY-Award winning Carolina Chocolate Drops, multi-instrumentalist Brett Ratliff delivers an unforgettable performance filled to the brim with East Kentucky pride. He grew up in Van Lear, Ky., the same historical coal camp that gave birth to country-icon and coal-miner's-daughter Loretta Lynn. In his youth, Ratcliff was mentored by regional roots masters-including George Gibson, Rich Kirby, Paul David Smith, Lee Sexton and Jamie Wells-who helped him hone his craft while solidifying his love for the banjo and introducing him to the stories of Appalachia that pervade his work today. Ratcliff has toured extensively with groups such as the Clack Mountain String Band, the Dirk Powell Band, and Rich & the Po' Folk, in addition to his solo performances following the release of Cold Icy Mountain in 2008 and Gone Boy in 2017. He has also taught at numerous workshops and music camps including the Cowan Creek Mountain Music School in Ky., Swannanoa Gathering in N.C., Augusta Heritage's Early Country Music Week in W. Va., Sore Fingers Week in Oxfordshire, England and the Festival of American Fiddle Tunes in Port Townsend, Wash.
Award-winning banjoist and artist John Haywood grew up immersed in the soulful music of the Old Regular Baptist Church in Floyd County, Ky. His father surveyed land for mining companies and sang in the gospel choir at the church, where Haywood would listen intently as his papaw sang traditional, unaccompanied songs of Zion. After receiving his Masters in Painting at the University of Louisville, Haywood was named a Kentucky Folklife apprentice to George Gibson, a banjo player from Knott County and this year's master in residence at the Cowan Creek Mountain School in Kentucky. Today, Haywood performs with Rich & the Po' Folk and can be heard on their 2011 recording When the Whistle Blew, and teaches advanced banjo at the Cowan Creek Mountain School. In addition to his prowess on the banjo, Haywood is also a visual artist whose work represents the history and music of East Kentucky.

Johnny Conqueroo- The electric rockers of
Johnny Conqueroo dish out high-octane jams that intertwine the wisdom and soul of the blues with the reckless, youthful spirit of rock 'n' roll, drenched in the heritage of their Appalachian homeland. Drawing from the sonic palates of vintage surf and garage rock, the teenage trio's scorching electric guitar riffs, grungy vocals and driving, frenetic drum beats take concertgoers on a journey across southern vignettes with rich characters and raw lyricism. The up-and-coming rockers founded the band in 2014 when its members-Grant Curless (vocals, guitar), Wils Quinn (drums) and Shawn Reynolds (bass)-were freshman in high-school in the their native state of Kentucky. Johnny Conqueroo shied away from prototypical indie or hipster musical leanings, instead following his instinct to create fervid rock 'n' roll tunes that explored the intricacies of life in the south. Today, their electrifying sound has earned them a place at the forefront of the Lexington, Ky., music scene with a devoted following and an ever-growing reputation.
Clint Roberts- an Americana Singer/Songwriter from Western North Carolina and he is starting fresh with his new EP "Where The Heart Is."
Sour Cream Band- a Lexington hard blues rock band with influences in punk, funk, metal, stoner rock, blues, psychedelic rock, etc. Bringing the vintage sound back with young faces!

Afro-funksters Kaleta & Super Yamba Band are known for their explosive live shows teeming with danceable rhythms and a vivacious energy that brings out the boogie in audiences from all walks of life.
Fronted by legendary Afrobeat veteran Leon Ligan-Majek-a.k.a. Kaleta-the Brooklyn, N.Y.,-based group weaves together lively, multi-faceted rhythms and groovy basslines beneath bright horns, swirling synthesizers and Kaleta's smoky vocals. Song lyrics seamlessly glide between languages native to West Africa including Fon, Goun, Yoruba and Ewe, along with French and Pidgin English, "the official language of Afrobeat" according to the band. Vocalist, guitarist, percussionist and producer Kaleta was born in the West African country of Benin Republic and lived his adolescent life in Lagos, Nigeria-the birthplace of Afrobeat. He got his start in the late 1970s performing in church and after capturing the attention of world music pioneer King Sunny Ade, was given the opportunity to go on a global tour with the iconic Nigerian musician and later with Fela Kuti though the 1980's and into the 1990's. After moving to New York City, Kaleta was overjoyed to find Super Yamba Band and hear their fresh take on the vintage sounds of his native Benin, taking its cues from artists like Orchestre Poly-Rythmo, El Rego and Gnonnas Pedro. Intergenerational fun for the whole family! Learn basic to intermediate folk dances for all ages, with internationally known instructors, Chrissy Davis-Camp and Jennifer Rose, at a beautiful location in the Kentucky hills. The day camp is limited to 50 participants, ages 9 to adult. Tuesday and Friday evening activities are open to all ages.

Guided Hikes
The Forestry Outreach Center will be hosting guided hikes on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at The Pinnacles and on Sundays at Brushy Fork. Weather permitting, a Forestry Outreach Center volunteer or staff member will lead educational hikes on varying trails in the BC Forest.

Singing Bird Music School
Musicians of all experience levels are welcome to participate in three days of hands-on learnshops in old time fiddle, banjo, guitar, flatfoot dancing, and singing taught by instructors Pam Gadd, Sam Gleaves, Carla Gover, John Harrod, Michael Parks, Lucian Parker, and Deborah Payne.
The Singing Bird Music School celebrates the living legacy of Kentucky fiddler Lewis Lamb, who will serve as the school's Master Artist.
Musicians age 10 and older are welcome to participate.
