This Week at Charlotte Lab School

Dear Lab Families,
As some of you may have already heard, over the weekend Kendra Johnson shared a letter with current Lab Middle School families to announce that she has decided not to return next year as Head of the Middle School, in order to stay at home with her two young children. We are so grateful for the contributions Ms. Johnson has made to our organization since its founding, and I am excited to be exploring ways for her to remain involved with Lab in less intensive ways as she spends more time with her little girls.
As Ms. Johnson shared with current families, I will be resuming the role as Acting Head of Middle School, in addition to my other responsibilities as Executive Director. I will begin spending more time at the middle school immediately to ensure a smooth transition and will be relocating my office there again for the fall. We have a wonderfully talented faculty that I am confident will handle this change with ease and I am personally looking forward to the opportunity to work closely again with an age group that I love so dearly!
In order to support me in this new dual role, we will be restructuring next year at the Middle School, including hiring a new Assistant Head of Middle School and adding a new Dean of Students position. Ricky Singh will be focused full time next year on assisting me with high school planning efforts thanks to our Department of Education Charter School Expansion grant. These positions will be posted this week and I hope to be able to make staffing decisions and announcements by early May, as we also finalize teacher offers. I want to assure you all that I am 100% committed to making Lab Middle School the unique and special place that I know it can be and to hiring the right staff to help me achieve that vision.

What a great week we had for the Innovation Fund! Since last Monday, we have raised another $30,000 toward our goal.
As a reminder, we set a target of hitting $250,000 by spring break, so we still have $18,068 to go by this Friday.
If you haven’t had a chance to make your donation yet, there is still time. We hope that EVERY FAMILY will choose to make a gift to Lab and demonstrate that our community is 100% behind our mission. Special thanks to

Not only will you be part of a group of individuals who are leading the way financially to improve the lives of our students, you will also be invited to leadership donor programs and events throughout the year.

Spring break is coming, so let’s celebrate with a week of Lab enthusiasm and spirit! We will have different school spirit themes for both the lower and middle school, so be sure to take a look at the flyers below (a hard copy also was sent home on Friday). At the middle school, grade levels will be judged for their participation, creativity, and enthusiasm, and we’ll declare a winning grade level on Friday!

Reminders from the Front Office

Check Lost and Found before spring break! It's spring cleaning time, and our lost and found is overflowing with water bottles, hoodies, jackets and more. Please stop by THIS WEEK to claim your items. All unclaimed items will be donated over spring break.
Allergy season has been particularly bad this year. Please keep in mind that the school not allowed to administer any allergy medication unless we have supporting documentation from a physician. If your child is struggling in this pollen-filled season, please make sure they take their allergy medicine at home.

Children's Theater of Charlotte Mini-Camp yet? These awesome day-long camps offer students the opportunity to be creative, learn and have fun when school is out. There are six remaining mini-camps for this school year: 5 during the week of spring break and 1 Lab only mini-camp on the April 22 workday.

Helping children to understand where their food comes from helps to shape them into more well-rounded and informed eaters as they grow. With local farmers’ markets and increased awareness around sourcing, eating locally grown food has certainly become easier. And this is to our benefit: food picked and shipped a long way can lose much of its nutritional value as it’s picked well before ripeness. Encouraging connection with the source of our food, either by visiting and patronizing local farms or growing our own, can help educate children on ingredients.
