Aris Papadopoulos |
Partner Spotlight - Aris Papadopoulos
Aris Papadopoulos is the founder of the nonprofit Resilience Action Fund.
Q: How did you get interested in disaster safety?
On September 11, 2001, I was meeting with Port Authority at 9 a.m. on the 65th floor of the North Tower. Surviving the World Trade Center attack dramatically changed the way I look at what and how we build. A few years later, I joined the board of CTL Group, one of the primary investigators of the towers' collapse. Prior to 9/11, I'd lived through two earthquakes in Greece, an industrial fire, and since moving to Miami I've witnessed several hurricanes.
My 25-year career in heavy construction materials exposed me to the inner workings of the building industry. What I saw alarmed me, and I began questioning why the system rewards risk-taking rather than resilient construction.
In 2010, I was one of the first business people to help the UN's International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR), later serving a two-year term as global chair of their private sector initiative, now known as ARISE. This experience provided me with a broader perspective on vulnerability, while confirming that the US is #1 (worse) in disaster economic losses.

ISO Releases National Building Code Assessment Report
The ISO 2019
National Building Code Assessment Report
in now available for download with an examination of the code enforcement efforts of more than 25,000 building departments in the United States. Building codes are the foundation of resilience and provide one of the most essential tools to prevent and/or mitigate disaster losses.
The report was developed by the ISO Building Code Effectiveness Grading Schedule (BCEGS®) team, which assesses building codes in effect and grades communities on both code adoption and enforcement. The report also features new modeled analyses from AIR Worldwide of natural hazards and catastrophes in each state and diverse perspectives on catastrophe mitigation from the federal government, nonprofit organizations, and academia. New FEMA Fact Sheets Available
FEMA Building Sciences at HQ (Building Science Branch - BSB) and Region IV are pleased to announce the
release of two fact sheets

The fact sheets explain that, before building in your community, it is important to recognize the hazards that may be present, their potential impact, and provides numerous considerations and resources to help mitigate those risks. Effective design, construction, code enforcement and building to or exceeding the latest standard of practice, increases the disaster resilience of structures and their associated utility systems exposed to risk, thereby reducing damages and injuries.
