JUST FYI

On March 5th I had surgery on my left eye. This was to correct an old eye problem that I've had for several years. Without going into great detail, let me just say that the recovery process has been much worse that the actual surgery itself. The eye surgeon put a gas bubble in the eye and ever since early March I've been pretty much blind in that eye. Hopefully, this condition will eventually be totally corrected and the eye surgeon expects me to make a full recovery.

This is why I did not put out a March Newsletter.

A LITTLE HUMOR IS OFTEN THE BEST MEDICINE!

Regarding my eye surgery, I have also had some minor complications arise, such as a corneal abrasion. My eye surgeon treated the abrasion and I recently went back to see him. When he came into the room he immediately began to look at my right eye. After several seconds he exclaimed happily that the eye looked great and the corneal abrasion was completely healed. My response? “Great, but you’re looking at the wrong eye.” The surgery, and the abrasion, had been on my left eye, not on my right one. I had to laugh. The surgeon is very skilled and I have complete faith in him and his abilities. But, I guess we can all make a mistake, now and then.

APRIL IS NATIONAL CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH.

Approximately 1,000 CASA/GAL programs are in 49 states. These programs recruit, train, support and supervise volunteers who represent the bests interests of abused, neglected and abandoned children. This important role takes place in the courtroom, plus other settings too.

Last year, nationwide, more than 251,000 abused, neglected and abandoned children were helped by more than 76,000 CASA and Guardian ad Litem (GAL) volunteers.

In many states these CASA/GAL volunteers are everyday citizens who have undergone screening and training with their local CASA/GAL Programs.

If you would like to find out more about the CASA/GAL Programs in your specific area, or make a donation, you can click on the picture above, or you can go to:

In my book "Saints, Sinners, Survivors" I mention the volunteer work I did with my local GAL Program. I volunteered with them for a number of years. Being a GAL volunteer was a very rewarding experience. No, not in monetary terms, but the personal satisfaction I received made me feel like a million dollars. If you have some free time, and you would like to make a difference in this troubled world, you might want to think about becoming a GAL volunteer.

NATIONAL POLICE WEEK
Sunday, May 13 - Saturday, May 19
(Washington, D.C.)

National Police Week, in Washington, D.C., usually draws between 25,000 to 40,000 attendees. The overwhelming majority of these individuals are law enforcement professionals, and their families. They come from all across America, plus some foreign countries too. I have seen "Bobbies" from Great Britain and Mounties from Canada, just to name a few.
The 30th Annual Candlelight Vigil

If you can't be in Washington, D.C., and you still want to see the Candlelight Vigil, you can watch it online. Just click on the picture of the National Memorial (upper left photo) and you'll be taken to the web site where you can register to see the Candlelight Vigil. It's free and an awesome experience to watch.

This year 360 names are being added to the walls of the Memorial. The 360 represent the 129 officers who died in 2017, as well as 231 who died in previous years but are just being honored this year.
