Seminar for Church Administrators
The Mid-Atlantic Region of the Administrative Personnel Association (APA) of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A) is sponsoring a one-day certification seminar for church support staff in the Synod of the Mid-Atlantic.
The seminar,
entitled
Office Administration and Spiritual Growth & Discipline
, will be held 8:30am to 5:15pm on Friday, June 29 at First Presbyterian Church of Howard County in Columbia. The $20 registration fee includes credit for participation in two classes and l
unch.
Most agree that the role of church administrators has changed tremendously. Today, th
e church offers more than a sanctuary and a sermon; the needs that are brought to it are far more complex and varied.
The 21st-cent
ury church is now a conglomerate, offering spiritual as well as community programs such as day care centers, grade schools, high schools, training institutes, youth organizations, senior citizen programs, help for coping with divorce, drug rehabilitation, vocational training, ministry to those who have issues like incarceration, HIV/AIDS and poverty. Churches are also increasingly serving as centers for social advocacy work as well as resources for economic development, local business and housing.
All of these facets require qualified personnel to run them; qualified personnel require human resources and business management; and human resources and business management require the application of state and federal rules and regulations. Someone has to be a steward of the interest of the church and its leadership. In growing churches, it often becomes important that someone other than the pastor be able to respond to the many issues that occur on a daily basis.
This person ensures that the direction set by the pastor is implemented, and that there is accountability. The pastor certainly cannot do it all. This is where the role of church administrator becomes so important. He or she is the valuable liaison between the pastor, the staff and the membership.
The APA seminar offers church administrators an opportunity to learn best practices and fellowship with others who share their responsibilities. APA is a professional association approved by the 2016 General Assembly where leaders of the Presbyterian Church recognized the importance of continued education and personal growth as an investment in the value of a lay professional within our ministry teams. For more than 40 years APA has been certifying employees of PCUSA entities in various levels of education to strengthen and enhance administrative skills, leadership development, technology prowess, financial management and personal spirituality.
