Affiliate Faculty Member Saves 9-Year-Old on Flight to Mexico

What began as a routine flight  for a family vacation to Mexico turned into anything but routine Monday for Delray Beach surgeon Joseph Ricotta. Midway through
the flight from Atlanta to Cabo San Lucas, Ricotta found himself rushing to the aid of a 9-year-old girl who had suffered a seizure. Ricotta, 46, began CPR and was able to revive the girl moments after she fell unconscious.

"She was on the floor in the aisle," he said. "They asked for a doctor on board, and I ran up to her. I resuscitated her and we got her back."

FAU Named Lewy Body Dementia 'Research Center of Excellence'

The Lewy Body Dementia Association ( LBDA) named FAU as an LBDA Research Center of Excellence (RCOE), a nationwide collaboration of 24 pre-eminent academic medical research centers. The LBDA is the leading advocacy group dedicated to raising awareness and advancing research about Lewy Body Dementia (LBD), which affects 1.4 million Americans and their families. FAU's LBDA Research Center of Excellence housed in the Comprehensive Center for Brain Health is spearheaded by James E. Galvin, M.D., M.P.H., a world-renowned neuroscientist and leading international expert on LBD and Alzheimer's disease, and associate dean for clinical research in the College of Medicine.

FAU Stroke Discovery Will Be Developed By CHS Pharma, Inc.

Researchers in the College of Medicine are addressing the challenges of treating TBI and stroke. Professors of Biomedical Science, Jang-Yen (John) Wu, Ph.D., and Howard Prentice, Ph.D., have developed and patented a novel approach combining three distinct classes of drugs to create a multi-drug combination therapy. They have joined forces with CHS Pharma, Inc., a South Florida-based biotechnology development company that has an intellectual property portfolio for potential treatments related to ischemic stroke, dry macular degeneration, and other age-related disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, to further develop and commercialize this promising technology.

Research Provides Hope for Parkinson's Disease Treatment

Dopamine has the lofty job of controlling emotions, moods, movements as well as sensations of pleasure and pain. Dysfunction of this critical neurotransmitter is the cause of a number of diseases, most notably, Parkinson's disease. Parkinson's disease is caused by the death of dopamine-producing cells and most theories of disease risk involve the selective vulnerability of ageing dopamine neurons to genetic mutations or to environmental toxins, or both. By visualizing the dopamine neurons in the "brain" of the tiny worm, C. elegans, neuroscientists in the lab of Dr. Randy Blakely, professor of biomedical science in FAU's College of Medicine and executive director of the Brain Institute, have identified a novel pathway that sustains the health of these cells.

Biomedical Research Day Winners

Congratulations to the winners of the 2018 Biomedical Research Day poster competition. Mariam Khachatryan was awarded first place for " Determination of Equilibrium Constants of Interaction Between CD36 and Individual PfEMP1 Domains." Subash Bhadari was awarded second place for " Neuroprotective properties of AEURA using in Vitro model of Stroke and Alzheimer Disease." Angie Posada was awarded third place for " Control of mitochondrial and nuclear α B functions by phosphorylation." The Office of Graduate Programs held their Graduate Student Research Day on April 13, providing students and faculty the opportunity to present their research and learn about the cutting-edge Biomedical Science studies conducted by their peers. Dr. Gelb Awarded Student Organization Advisor of the Year

On April 11, the Blood Pressure Screening Association (BPSA) received FAU's Boca Raton campus Student Organization Advisor of the Year award on behalf of Dr. Ira J. Gelb at the Student Government banquet. "Dr. Gelb teaches pre-health students how to read and interrupt electrocardiograms to expand their knowledge within the cardiology field. Our accomplishments as a new student organization would not be possible without his continuous guidance and mentorship," said Dana-Lee Bowes, President of BPSA. The BPSA student organization teaches pre-health students how to measure blood pressure, pulse rate, body mass index, and take patient history. Their goal is to provide free blood pressure screenings and community outreach with a primary focus on under-served populations. ll Article
Undergraduate Researcher of the Year

Congratulations to Haley Katz, who was awarded Undergraduate Researcher of the Year for the College of Medicine at the Annual Honors Ceremony in April, by the Office of Undergraduate Research and Inquiry (OURI). Haley participated in an NSF grant last year, and studied the contribution of immune cells in allograft and xenograft rejection in Dr. Nouri Shirazi's lab. Haley is currently mentored by Dr. Nouri Shirazi, professor of Integrated Medical Science in the College of Medicine. The process is highly competitive, in which nominations for students engaged in research and scholarly endeavors, are sent to college Deans for final selection.

St. Katharine Drexel Health Fair

This month, Dr. Bernard Reyes and Internal Medicine Residents engaged in community service at the St. Katharine Drexel Health Fair in Weston. The residents assisted approximately 87 patients, many of whom had not seen a doctor in several years. In addition, 27 new patients were registered to the Boca Clinic. Although the fair officially ended at 2pm, the residents continued to assist the multitude of individuals waiting to receive care. Visitors to the FAU Medicine booth received a clinic postcard with listed services, times, and appointment information. The feedback from the event was impressive and FAU's Internal Medicine residents have been invited to the February 2019 fair. Read the Full Article
Substance Use Disorder Talks

Approximately 1,000 recovery patients from the community, industry professionals including recovery center counselors and staff, and FAU faculty, staff, and students, gathered on April 7 for the third annual FAU Substance Use Disorder Talks (SUDTALKS), hosted in partnership by The Delray Beach Drug Task Force and The Phyllis and Harvey Sandler School of Social Work at FAU. Celebrities and sports legends including Daryl Strawberry, Pat O'Brien, and Royce Da 59, shared personal stories of addiction. Additionally, policymakers discussed advocacy efforts and the challenges surrounding the opioid epidemic. The College of Medicine's Senior Associate Dean for Research and Professor and Chair for the Department of Biomedical Science, Dr. Janet Robishaw, discussed how genetic testing can help determine if some people possess high genetic risk factors that may increase their propensity of becoming addicted to opioids. The goal is for genetic data to inform doctors prior to the prescribing of opioids so that alternative treatments can be explored when needed.

Medical Students Participate in the Miami Gay Pride Celebration

The College of Medicine's inaugural participation in the Miami Beach Gay Pride Celebration was a success! This year was the 10th annual celebration and it is estimated over 200,000 people attended. Throughout the two day event, FAU medical students engaged with the public and represented the ethical principles of the university. The students and residents introduced the public to FAU's mission on inclusion and diversity. FAU clinics, medical services, and community outreach were advertised on the college's pamphlets and were given to those who visited the FAU Medicine booth. Congratulations to Internal Medicine resident, Edgar Fernandez, who received an invitation from the Florida Department of Health to share his HIV/PrEP research, which was based on data collection at the Pride event.
