Dear Friends of Safe Harbor Lab Rescue,

We Labs are known for our fun-loving, outgoing personalities and, like our friend 'O Riley dressed up for St. Paddy's Day, make great subjects for photos. This year's Photo Contest  for the 2020 SHLR calendar will begin next month, so keep your camera close by ready to catch your Lab's most winning pose . . . a spring snow, delicious mud, or some budding blooms might make a perfect setting!

Speaking of fun loving, check out recently adopted Max singing along the music on NPR.

May your Pot 'O Gold be filled with Biscuits!

Woof! I'm From....
Labs who join us at Safe Harbor hale from a variety of places! They come from Colorado shelter partners, as well as from rescue partners in surrounding states including Utah, Texas, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Missouri and Arkansas. Labs also come to us from owners who can no longer care for them due to a change in family circumstances, a move to a care facility or sometimes someone has passed away. Vet hospitals also call us when an adoptable Lab is surrendered to them for a variety of reasons.
Here's a sampling . . . most have already found their forever home here in Colorado!

Advice on all matters Labby for both four and two-legged folks.

Dear Labby-

The other day I sent a pee mail to my friend, Barkley, to see if he wanted to play. He told me he was laid up for a while with a bad cut on his paw. "Bled like crazy," he said, "but my Peeps had a doggie emergency first aid kit handy to patch me up 'til we could get to the vet." An emergency first aid kit for us pups?  Sounds like a good idea, but what should I tell my dad to put in it besides treats for an emergency snack?

Dear Moocher-

You're right! Every house and car, too, if you're out hiking or at the dog park a lot, should have an emergency first aid kit for us. You never know if we'll get hurt, eat something poisonous, need our temperature taken or who knows what. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) lists everything you need for a
basic emergency first aid kitThey've got a great Pet First Aid brochure   you can download, too, and keep handy. There's info on emergencies like a snake bite (yup, I've seen them on the trail), heat stroke, burns, and bleeding.  Good stuff to know to help us or a friend 'til we get to the vet.

Love, Labby

New Beginnings: BudE
BudE's in love with the mountain life and has been savoring every minute in his new forever home.  This delightful one-year-old chocolate chap has landed in puppy paradise and is thriving with abundant exercise, training, and love from his new parents, Darren and Michelle, and six-year-old canine big sis, Lilly.

His proud parents filled us in on their clever new pup's adventures and achievements:

BudE aka Jones is living the dream. He enjoys 35 acres of mountain land, exploring it all with his new sister, Lilly. He is our lanky bungler. A big goofy dummy who loves to snuggle and nuzzle and just be around his humans. Adopting BudE was great for all of us. We can't imagine our home without him. We absolutely love him.

BudE is in heaven roaming our property. He is super excited to go on his daily hikes and has a ton of energy. He bounds through the deep snow like it is nothing. He is fun to watch as he lays in the deep powder and swims. New smells and sounds cause a tilt of his head and are very often followed by his super low pitched bark. He roams untethered with us while hiking the property and has found the deer population very interesting as well as much faster than he is. There has been a lot of snow on the property so we are looking forward to "easier" hiking in the coming months. He is extremely smart and wants to please his humans. He mastered the dog door day one. In the past month we have worked his training program daily and he is responding like an old pro to field commands (quite impressive I may say). His collection of (chew) toys rivals any toddler. He is really strong and plays tug-of-war with his sister, teasing her more often than not. Oh yeah, did I mention he loves to eat?  Boy does he love to eat.   Thank you for all you do to protect and help our four-legged pals!

Our thanks to Andrea and Mike for fostering BudE/Jones!
Partner Spotlight: Alameda East  Veterinary Hospital Customer Service Representatives
When our Labs arrive, their first stop is Alameda East Veterinary Hospital for their intake vetting and care before they head to foster homes.  The first ones to greet them are the customer service representatives (CSRs) who go the extra mile for our Labs. Their job as the first contact with clients in this busy general practice and specialty hospital open 24/7 is an important one: checking people and pups in and out, handling emergencies, supporting distressed people, answering phones and questions, assisting the medical staff, and being flexible to help as the day demands. And the demands are many for this poised, patient and organized group.

The CSRs are all trained in Safe Harbor's special intake procedures to expedite getting our Labs admitted.  In addition, they make time to help volunteers get photos of arriving Labs, give the Labs a little extra loving and facilitate any special intake needs. We greatly appreciate all they do for Safe Harbor's Labs!
