Peñasco ISD Weekly Update
Due to the rapidly-changing nature of the COVID-19 crisis, all school plans are subject to change based on orders from the governor and recommendations from scientific health organizations.
|
|
Due to the critical COVID 19 situation in our state, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has issued a shelter in place executive order starting Monday November 16th through November 30th.
Therefore our campus is closed to all students and staff. Classes will continue remotely. We will continue food service. After November 30, the shelter in place order will operate on a county by county basis. We will let you know if limited campus operations may resume at that time. Stay safe, stay at home.

Things That Make Us Happy!
|
|
The Natural Helpers, a group of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students, are meeting weekly to learn skills for peer helping and discussing ways to address issues we're all facing due to the pandemic. They created a poster about the things that make them happy and shared it with teachers and students. You'll be finding these posters around town soon!
For now, here is the Natural Helpers' poster and a poster from Ms. Visarraga's kindergarten class!

Peñasco Athletics Department Gets Pixellot Camera to Stream Events
|
|
As high schools nationwide continue to deal with CoVid-19 and make plans for sports, the NFHS network offered schools that are facing possible attendance restrictions at events during the 2020-2021 school year a free Pixellot camera worth over $8,000.
With the Pixellot camera, Peñasco Athletic Department will now be able to stream sporting events live on the NFHS network with a 4K panoramic video. Fans and families can watch games live streamed with an NFHS subscription (details to come soon). The school will receive a share of the subscription revenue. As many know, last year's basketball state tournament was shut down to fans and many of our families and friends watched our Peñasco Lady Panthers through the NFHS network. The NFHS has provided our beloved Peñasco community an opportunity to still watch our athletes compete.

Next Extended Learning Day

The next Extended Learning Day is Friday, November 20.
School on this day will follow normal school hours and schedules.
|
|
Families whose children achieve perfect attendance between Wed., Nov. 11 and Friday, Nov. 20 will receive a turkey.
Due to an inability to purchase enough hams (because so many of you are doing awesome with attendance!), the district has instead purchased turkeys.

List of Resources for Help with Student Academics
|
|
Taos Behavioral Health is considering adding in-person services from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday-Thursday.
- The program would meet in small groups, with TBH staff working directly with students as they attend their online classes. The program will also coordinate with other health services, including speech and occupational therapy and counseling. This is an excellent opportunity to receive dedicated, personal help for your students. The program will only begin if there is sufficient interest. If you think your student could benefit, please contact Racheal Pyne: tbhccssrp@gmail.com
Do your juniors and seniors need help with technology, addressing problematic drug/alcohol use, and referrals to other support services as needed such as counseling, food banks, etc.
- PISD is exploring a program to help with these issues! If interested, contact Michael Noll: mnoll@penascoisd.com, 575-779-1466.
The district is offering the Waterford program to give K-3rd grade students extra help. The activities are fun and easy. They also offer ideas for parents who wants to supplement their kids' learning.
- If you don't yet know about this program, ask your students' teachers.
Los Angelitos is an early-intervention program that offers services to children in need from ages birth to three years. For more information, contact Baleria Santistevan
Having trouble turning in assignments on Canvas?
-
One of the easiest ways to submit paper assignments is to take a photo with a phone. Then, you can either email them to the student's email address so that they can upload them into Canvas, or you can download the Canvas app on the phone and turn them in directly from the phone. The app is available in every app store. To find your student's school, search https://penascoisd.instructure.com/login/canvas and then sign in with the student's email and password.

Does This Sound Familiar?
|
|
Do your students struggle with any of the following:
-
Handwriting (hard to read, requires a lot of effort from your child)
-
Organization (Are their books and papers scattered everywhere? Are they always losing things? Do they have a hard time taking clear photos of their work to submit?)
-
Attention (Do they struggle to stay in front of their computer during class? Do they space off during class? Do they get distracted by one really interesting part of a class and lose track of what is happening?)
-
Reading (Does reading seem harder for them than it should? Do they hate reading?)
-
Math (When they write out math problems, do they struggle to line up the numbers? Are they struggling to learn basic arithmetic?)
All of these may be indicators that your child may qualify for special services (extra help, accommodations with school work). Your child is entitled to these services. They can improve their handwriting, organization, attention span, reading, and math skills!
If any of the above sounds familiar, contact Nicaea Chavez, nchavez@penascoisd.com, and/or fill out these forms!
