Plymouth Friends Meetinghouse History
Local history is something that we should learn and cherish as it gives us important insight into our past. We're going to begin this series with a look into our very own Plymouth Friends Meetinghouse as it has been the location of a lot of local history.
Plymouth Friends Meetinghouse
Historical Events -

  • 1686 - Local religious meetings of the Society of Friends begin in the members private homes.
  • 1704 - The future location of Plymouth Friends Meetinghouse is purchased and plans to build begin immediately.
  • 1708 - The construction of Plymouth Friends Meetinghouse is completed.
  • 1777 - Used during the Revolutionary War as a field hospital and gathering location for General George Washington's troops that were led by General Lafayette. Due to the peaceful beliefs of the Society of Friends, the Friends Meetinghouse usage in the Revolutionary War and the participation of members in the war caused some turmoil in the acceptance of the Plymouth Friends Meetinghouse among the Society of Friends.
  • 1780 - Became the first location for a school within Plymouth Township as the east wing was added to the building to house the school.
  • 1860's - Was a center of activity during the abolition movement as meetings occurred and runaway slaves were hidden in the homes of members.
  • 1935 - A new building was erected on the land that became the first independent location of William Jeanes Public Library.
