BHI Voters Approve Bond Referendum

At last Tuesday's Primary Election, 85% of Bald Head Island voters approved the Village's proposed bond referendum for shoreline protection efforts.

According to the Village, the project, slated to get underway in late winter of 2018, will look to place approximately 1 million cubic yards of sand beginning at the Terminal Groin and extending east along south beach. The project also includes the replacement of five (5) geotextile soft-filled tube groins that are damaged beyond repair. In terms of project costs, it is estimated at $15.5M, which required the approval of the $6M bond referendum to add to the existing $9.5M bond capacity carried over from approval of the 2014 bond referendum for shoreline management activities.

Detailed information will be forthcoming from the Village as work begins.

Wildlife Overlook Safeguard

After consultation with staff from the NC Wildlife Resources Commission (WRC), the Village Public Safety Department and the BHI Conservancy, BHA's Board of Directors unanimously voted to install additional safeguards at the Wildlife Overlook located on Stede Bonnet. Fencing will be installed at the Overlook in late May that should help prevent interactions between alligators and humans at that site.

This action was taken primarily upon the advice of WRC staff, whose field tests showed the alligators at the Overlook showed no aversion to humans and, in fact, approached staff soon after arrival. WRC's analysis was that humans are likely feeding the wildlife at the site, and that additional safeguards should be installed to help reduce the danger both to humans and alligators.

Pirate Invasion Needs Your Help in Two Areas

Adopt a Pirate!
BHI Pirate Invasion is looking for housing for its Pirates! What a treat for your children and grandchildren to host a Pirate (or 2 or 3) in your home during Pirate's Weekend. If you would like to "adopt a Pirate," please contact Sandy Kades at   [email protected] . All they need is a bed, access to a shower and, if possible, a golf cart to get to and from the events. If you don't have an extra golf cart, Sandy will work something out.

Calling all vounteers!
BHI Pirate Invasion also needs volunteers to help make this island event run smoothly. Help is especially needed on Saturday, June 16, since that is an all-day event with lots of activities. If you have a few hours to donate with check-in, burying treasure, pouring beer or serving food, monitoring the gate, helping sell t-shirts and posters or over-seeing the children paint a pirate ship, please contact Sandy Kades at 804-382-1407 or  [email protected] . Sandy wou ld also appreciate any donations to help defray the cost of this event. BHI Pirate Invasion, Inc is a non-profit 501(c)(3) entity so all donations are tax deductible. Please contact Sandy Kades to request a sponsorship form.
