WEEKLY EAGLE UPDATES
Lifting Our Students During
Times Of Uncertainty

Dear Amana Academy families,

One week ago today and in the days since, we have watched in horror the videos, images and statements of rioters and domestic terrorists attacking our nation’s Capitol building. The stark difference in the reaction of law enforcement to this insurrection compared to the Civil Rights protests that occurred in the wake of the killing of George Floyd last summer only serves to make matters more painful. What happened was wrong; and as our children watch, our high-five habits of responsibility and courage compel us to reach out to our elected officials demanding that they hold those involved accountable.

As a school community that encourages our students to achieve beyond what they think possible and become changemakers, Amana Academy has to have these important conversations. For our nation to remain strong, it is essential that we teach our students the values and processes involving civility and civic engagement. As they learn about the history of our nation, they must also come to understand implicitly all aspects of citizenship, including both the benefits and responsibility of being an American citizen.

We recognize there is a range of emotions that people may be feeling following these acts that come at a time when people are already experiencing stress, anxiety, and hardship. We also recognize that for students, staff, and families of color, the intensity of this trauma is heightened.

As the rhetoric intensifies amid the backdrop of a surging pandemic, we will be taking the following precautionary measures:

  • Out of an abundance of caution, and the fact that next week will be somewhat irregular anyway (with M.L.K. Holiday on Monday and Inauguration Day on Wednesday), Amana Academy will remain in remote learning mode through Friday January 22nd . Face-to-Face students will return to the building on Mon, Jan. 25th. If Fulton County Schools announces an extension of remote learning beyond this, then we will do the same. We understand this decision puts those families who were looking forward to the face-to-face learning option into a difficult position, and we ask you all to hold on. We haven’t forgotten about you.

  • Over the weekend, Principal Abdul-Khaliq lifted up our high-five habit of compassion by making space for teachers to practice self-care and to use Crew Time next week with students to unpack and process events in age-appropriate ways. Counselors too are available to talk with students individually and in groups. We are fortunate to be able to build off of our social justice curriculum in helping students process and understand the injustice, historical context, and inherent racism of current events.

  • Your children may have questions and wish to discuss these events at home. Here is a resource that may be helpful as you have conversations with your children.

If your child is experiencing anxiety or has questions that you cannot answer, you are encouraged to reach out to your child’s teacher, our School Counselor Ms. Julia Guy using her online forms: Student Self- Referral Form  or Concerned Adult Referral Form

I want to affirm our commitment to extend student learning beyond just mastery of knowledge and skills, because our students need to be prepared for their future roles as leaders. While this is all so painful, I am also hopeful that we will persevere as a school community and as a nation. Our work in educating students to respect our democracy, think critically, be anti-racist, and stand up against injustice and falsehood is more important than ever.

Thank you for being part of our spectacularly diverse community. Don’t hesitate to reach out with questions or to share resources and feedback.

Executive Director
IMPORTANT:
Face-to-Face Return Date POSTPONED TO JAN.25

As many of you are aware, COVID-19 numbers have continued to rise dramatically in the past several weeks. We care deeply about our students' safety, and the safety of our teachers and staff who support your children each day. To ensure the safety of our learning community, Amana Academy is postponing the start of Face-to-Face Learning for F2F students to Monday, January 25th due to rising COVID-19 cases. All students will remain in Remote Learning and continue learning virtually until that date.

Due to the above, Amana will continue to follow the Remote Daily Schedule from Fall semester (we will NOT switch over to the NEW Spring schedule until further notice). Please continue to use your child's Daily Lesson document to view their class Zoom links and lessons.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS
Zoom Updates: Logging Into Classes

In the past couple weeks, we have communicated that students will need to log into their Google accounts in order to access their Zoom classes.

However, we have been alerted to login issues students are experiencing via Zoom. To ensure a smooth learning week, all students will login as they normally would have during Fall semester. Again, until further notice, students will NOT need to sign-in with their Amana email during the first week back. We will alert you of any updates in the days to come.
