Duperron Attends A "Really Big Show"
On Tuesday night, I had the pleasure of attending 'Music Around the World' at the James R. Armstrong Theater. As Ed Sullivan may have proclaimed, "It was a really big shew." Presented by Bourque Music, this production was a celebration of people, music and composers from all over the world.

As audience members waited for the show to begin, there was a constant excitement and anticipation. Artists performed a variety of styles and genres from Mexico, Indonesia, Russia, Italy, America, France and Germany. I was extremely impressed with the professionalism of the performers who were a variety of ages.

"We celebrate creative expression around the world because kindness unites us with one another and in order to demonstrate that kindness there must be respect. We are proud to demonstrate that respect and celebrate all that makes us unique and special through music," exclaimed Michelle Bourque.

The Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce thanks Bourque Music for being a Chamber member and extends congratulations on their celebration of culture. Learn more about Bourque Music.

Annal Inaugural and Business Awards Event Honors Exemplary Members
The Chamber’s recent Inaugural and Business Awards Luncheon, held at Sunrider International, spotlighted the caliber of member organizations, volunteers and sponsors who are the lifeblood of the Chamber. The 2018-2019 Board of Directors took their oath of office just prior to the luncheon, and were in a celebratory mood to honor an impressive group of honorees, including Rob Van Lingen, recipient of the prestigious George Whittlesey Memorial Award, and Todd Trinneer, who received the J. Walker Owens Volunteerism Award.

The event was made possible with the support of its sponsors: El Camino College, California State University Dominguez Hills, Kaiser Permanente, Pelican Products, Torrance Memorial Medical Center, Torrance Refining Company, Southern California Gas Company, Arconic Fastening Systems & Rings, Green Hills Memorial Park, StubHub Center and our gracious hosts Sunrider International. Duperron Attends Schriever Wall of Honor Ceremony
In 2007, the Air Force Association’s Schriever Chapter 147, with support from industry partners, sponsored and commissioned the Statue of General Bernard A. Schriever. In November 2007, the Space & Missile Systems Center (SMC) dedicated the Statue and Wall as the General Schriever Memorial. The 60 th SMC anniversary in 2014 was chosen as the initial occasion to recognize some of the earliest pioneers who have made tremendous contributions to our community by adding their names to the Schriever Wall of Honor.

As a member of the Honorary Commanders program, Duperron was welcomed to the ceremony by Colonel Thomas Rock. Lt. General John F. Thompson, Commander, Space and Missile Systems Centers, Air Force Space Command, Los Angeles provided insight into the accomplishments of the six 2018 honorees being added to the Wall of Honor. Honorees were Major General John E. Kulpa, Jr., Mr. James R. Dempsey, Lt. General Forrest S. McCartney, Mr. Hideyoshi Nakamura, Dr. James B. Woodford, Jr., and Col. Albert John Wetzel.
Torrance Chamber Joins Others to Limit Trump Tariffs
The Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce (TACC) has joined 222 state and local chambers and fifty-one trade groups in signing a letter in support of a bill introduced this month by Senator Bob Corker, R-Tennessee. With U.S. trade fights increasingly roiling markets, a growing chorus of U.S. industries is backing legislation in Congress that would limit President Trump’s ability to slap tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. The legislation would require Congress to approve or reject any new tariffs the president imposes based on national security concerns.
Chinese Delegation Welcomed by Chamber Leadership and Members
Chairman Laurie Latham Brandt, Red Car Brewery and Restaurant and immediate past chairman Jonathan Beutler, Sunrider International, welcomed a delegation from the Jiangsu Providence, China this past week. “Exchanges like these help develop mutual understanding and strengthen cooperation and cultural communication between China and the United States”, stated Wang Daliang, Secretary-general, Xinghua Foundry Association.

Discussion items through a translator included energy saving products, technology to assist in cleaning the air in China, electric vehicles and bicycles, the proximity of Torrance to the Port of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles International Airport, business development, professional leadership and workforce training.

Chamber members enthusiastically engaged and welcomed the delegation in conversation by sharing their experiences and knowledge. In attendance were: Past chairman of the board, Merrietta Fong, Servatius, O’Brien and Fong, LLP; Jan Vogel, South Bay Workforce Investment Board; Norman Arikawa, Port of Los Angeles; Minal Mondkar and Sanjay Murty, Aura Seating and Aurelia Friedman, office of Congressman Ted Lieu.
