City modifies Public Safety Plan

Tukwila's Original Public Safety Plan

In November of 2016, voters in Tukwila approved a public safety bond to pay for:
  • Replacement of three seismically-deficient, aging fire stations (Stations 51, 52 and 54)
  • Fire equipment and apparatus - such as fire trucks and other life/safety tools - for the life of the 20-year bond; and
  • Construction of a Justice Center to house the Police Department and Municipal Court.
In addition, the City is building a consolidated Public Works facility to replace Tukwila's seismically deficient and undersized existing public works shops. This building will be funded by equal contributions from the City's General and Enterprise Funds.

Since the projects were first identified in 2015, market conditions and cost escalation have ballooned significantly, adding substantial costs to each project on both land acquisition and construction costs. The City Council Finance Committee has been working since February of this year to identify the best course of action to address the funding gap and deliver key projects in the most fiscally-prudent manner. As a result, the Council provided staff direction on how to achieve these goals while continuing to implement the Public Safety Plan.

Changes to the Public Safety Plan

The modified Public Safety Plan includes:
  • Replace Fire Stations 51 and 52; the Fire Stations Location Study completed in 2017 indicated that both Fire Stations 51 and 52 need to move south in order to maintain an equitable level of fire response throughout the City. Because the existing Station 54 is within the area identified in the Study for optimal location - and in order to save costs to the City - it will not be replaced at this time.
  • Modify the fire equipment and apparatus funding to 10 years; the City will identify a long-term strategy for subsequently funding this equipment to ensure the ongoing success of our Public Safety Plan.
  • Construction of the Justice Center remains as planned and will house the Police Department, Municipal Court and the City's Emergency Operations Center.
  • Invest $30M in Public Works to acquire the property, implement a master planning process, and improve at least one of the existing buildings on site.
The City has identified a strategy to implement the modified Public Safety Plan that does not require additional voter-approved tax dollars nor any new taxes.
Reminder: Fireworks are illegal in Tukwila and no BBQs at the Family Fourth at the Fort this year

Remember, all fireworks are illegal in the City of Tukwila.  Persons caught lighting fireworks will be issued citations, and the Tukwila Police and Fire Departments will engage in enhanced enforcement leading up to and on July 4.  Fireworks lead directly to injuries and fires, please do your part and refrain from using them. To report illegal fireworks, dial 911.

You are encouraged, however, to join your neighbors and friends at the FREE Family 4th at the Fort, hosted by the City of Tukwila every year at Fort Dent Park.  The park opens at 9:00 a.m. with festivities beginning at 4:00 p.m.  The amazing firework show starts at 10:00 p.m.   Bring the family and come down Fort Dent and enjoy the fun.  We hope to see you there!

Please be aware that b ecause small fires have occurred in the past, we are now enforcing a no-grill rule this year. Instead, please plan ahead of time to pack a picnic meal or visit one of the food vendors at the event (which will include BBQ!).
