From the Interim Minister
I want to share some of our experiences in the in the 62 years I have been doing ministry.  During that time, I preached at 2 student churches for a total of 4 years while I was in college and seminary.  We served 4 settled pastorates for a total of 37½ years, and this is our 17 th interim in 20½ years.  The average length of the interims has been 12.4 months.  The shortest was 2 months (I finished out a 2 year interim) and the longest was 21½ months.
All of these congregations have been the same in some respects and different in other respects.   All were Disciples of Christ congregations.   All had the same elements in their worship services: hymns, pastoral prayer, sermon, scripture reading, and communion.
For the most part the differences came in how these elements of worship were used.   The Lord's Prayer was prayed in different places in the service.   Sometimes following the invocation and sometimes following the pastoral prayer.   Some congregations pray "debts" and "debtors; some pray "trespasses" and "those who trespass against us;" and others pray "sins" and "those who sin against us."   One congregation ended the prayer with "forever and ever."
Communion has been served in about every way imaginable in a Disciple church.   One congregation had the deacons pass the bread, and we all took it together.   The deacons then came back and passed the cups, and we all took it together.   Finally, the deacons passed the offering plates.   Some congregation take the communion as it is passed and put the cups back in the tray.   Some take the bread as it is passed and hold the cup until they are ready to drink it after meditation and then place the cup in a pew cup holder.   Some congregations have communion before the sermon and some have it after the sermon (which my seminary worship professor taught was the proper place for it).
Scripture reading varies as well.   Some congregations have the pastor read the sermon text.   Some have a worship leader read the sermon text.   Some read an Old Testament and a New Testament scripture; one of them is the sermon text.   Some read all three texts from the lectionary (Old Testament, Epistle, and Gospel).   One even had the congregation stand for the reading of the Gospel lesson.
Housing has been interesting for us.   We had parsonages for all 4 of our settled pastorates.   There were 3 parsonages for interims and 3 slum-lord houses for interims, because those were the only places that would allow a cat.   Sometimes the congregation would find interim housing for us and sometimes we had to find our own.   We are very happy with the housing we have in Lafayette.
We used our own furniture in our first 3 interims because we had not yet moved into our "retirement" (Dorothy Says I don't know what the word means) home in Colorado Springs.   Our shortest and longest interims were in Colorado Springs; so we lived in our own home with our own furniture.   All other interim congregations have loaned us furniture.
Interim work has been very interesting and satisfying for Dorothy and me, and we consider it a great adventure.   Blessings,  Pastor Hayes

On June 7 at 6 p.m. in our Fellowship Hall, the CWF will be presenting "Mosey Down Broadway IV", which is an evening of Broadway show tunes sung by our own Music Director Jeff Goodspeed and Barry Kemble.  Both are truly professionals and it's an evening not to be missed!  The Mosey is OPEN TO ALL to attend and will be an enjoyable evening for everyone.  It will offer desserts and horsd'oeurves.  While no tickets will be sold, there will be a free will offering and a signup sheet later so we'll know how many people to expect.  Plan to attend and bring some friends!
     Pastoral Search Committee
I am here to give the congregation an update of what is happening with the pastoral search committee.   After Pastor Eberhard announced his retirement, a search committee was formed to follow the process for finding a new Senior Pastor.   The Search committee has 16 members representing almost all of our functional ministries.   The Search committee met for the first time after the September Board Meeting and then weekly through October and November.   Our first task was to find an interim minister.   We were successful as Pastor Phillip Hayes was called and began serving us in mid-January.
Jim Rybka has served as chair of the pastoral search committee since the committee was formed.  Since the Rybka's will soon be moving to Arizona, I have assumed the responsibility of chair of the search committee with the help of Carolyn Kanehe.  We will be assisted by Carolyn Reed, Assistant Regional Minister and by Pastor Phillip who has led 16 other churches through the interim process.  The committee and I would like to thank Jim for his excellent leadership of the search committee.
The search committee met last Wednesday, April 11 th .  Carolyn Reed, our Assistant Regional Minister, led an orientation exercise to help the committee as we begin the next step in the search process.  The next step is to build the Congregational Profile which is a document to be shared with potential candidates informing them how we see ourselves as a congregation and where we wish to go in the future.  This information will help the candidates know not only who we are, but also what we expect them to help us become.
Much of the work to answer the questions in the profile about how we see ourselves as a congregation and where we wish to go in the future needs to come from you, the congregation.  These answers will be found by the New Beginnings program as the congregation will be involved in answering these questions during the upcoming home meetings.  Therefore, all of the congregation (not just the board members or the search committee) are encouraged to participate fully in the New Beginnings program.  It is essential for the future of our Church.  So when you are asked to attend New Beginnings home meetings, please attend the meetings and actively be involved.
A "progress Chart" will be placed in the gathering place which will keep you informed of the progress of the search process.
Now everyone needs to be patient.  This process needs time to find the right person.  And the congregation needs time to adjust to the possibility to a new Senior Pastor.  Brian Nelson told the Elders and the Board that it can take as long as one month for each year that the last Pastor served for a congregation to grieve the loss of its old Pastor and be ready to accept a new pastor.  We don't know if it will take that long, but the important thing is to be patient so that the Search Committee can follow its process and we are confident that if we follow our process, God will help us to find the right person to call.  Your prayers and support are appreciated.  Sandie
Time is rapidly running out to select and take part in one of the very important Group meetings for New Beginnings.  You may still select and sign up for your choice on Sunday April 29 before, during and after each worship service.  If you are unable to attend on the 29 th , you may still lock in your choice by calling Norman Long at 765/567-2733.  Each of the 7 remaining sites are limited to only the first 10 people who sign up.  This policy from the New Hope Partnership insures that each person will have ample time and opportunity to express their thoughts and opinions on the future, focus, ministry and new pastor coming to First Christian Church - Lafayette.   Don't miss this important opportunity, it is in your best interest!!!!
