Let the Games Begin!!Games

Art with a Heart, in partnership with  Playworks Maryland, transformed old asphalt at Windsor Hills Elementary/Middle School into a colorful, playful space! Students in first through fifth grade helped to paint seven different games while learning painting techniques, color mixing and engaging in a community collaboration. 


Art with a Heart Board Transitions!Alyson

On June 3 0 th, Alyson Friedman completed her two-year term as President of the Art with a Heart Board of Directors. Duri ng her tenure, the organization moved to larger space, increased its programming collaborations, installed a record nu mber o f public art projects, and selected its fourth Art of Leadership cohort.  We are grateful for Alyson's dedication and service to the organization and look forward to her continuing on the Art with a Heart Board. Art with a Heart welcomed two new members to its Board, Karen Dates-Dunmore and Jacquelyn Bullock and voted on the following slate of officers: Shelly Malis-President; Craig Solomon-Vice President; Alyssa Sapia-Treasurer, and Bennett Robley and Laurie Duhan-Co-Secretaries. We are grateful to all the Art with a Heart Board members for time and talent.
Mark your calendars and prepare to do some rocking and shopping on Friday, August 10th from 5:30pm to 8:00pm! Come celebrate Art with a Heart's HeARTworks students while enjoying food and drink concessions by Zeffert & Gold, art sales, and great music by Beatles cover band the Mahoney Brothers!

Art with a Heart Hosts Inspiring and Creative Retreat LMCJ

On June 11th, teachers and staff from Lillie May Carroll Jackson Charter School engaged in a day long retreat at Art with a Heart. In addition to team building and professional development, Art with a Heart facilitated a painting project to creatively express the values of the school community. The finished projects were framed and will be displayed throughout the school.  

PROGRAMMING
Colorful Flying Fish Take Over Wolfe Street Academy Colorful

Art with a Heart, in partnership with Arts Every Day, worked with graduating 5th grade students from  Wolfe St. Academy to create a meaningful legacy project. Thinking environmentally, the students used recycled water bottles and cardboard to create a fun and colorful school of fish. As these 5th grade students swim onto middle school, the sea of fish will continue to grow with each graduating class!
   
 
Early Man Had Nothing on These Cave Paintings by Hazelwood StudentsHazelwood

Art with a Heart students in the 3rd grade at Hazelwood Elementary Middle School learned about the origin of Paleolithic cave paintings. The eager artists utilized shape, color, and texture to honor the time period and practice of communicating with pictures. Students then painted their creations onto a mobile mural surface. Each prehistoric panorama set of panels will be utilized by classroom teachers to establish a fun and inviting cool down/reading space.
Dance Break! Keith Harring Style!Dance

Students in Art with a Heart classes at the Judy Center at Eutaw-Marshburn Elementary School celebrated the end of the school year by creating Keith Haring-inspired dance paintings. After choosing their favorite Haring figure, students painted vibrant backgrounds and enjoyed practicing line qualities and patterns.
Science Outside the Lines: Neurons, Skeletons and Bugs, Oh My!SOTL

For the second year, Art with a Heart collaborated with graduate students from  Johns Hopkins University to integrate science and art at Henderson Hopkins  in a program called, Science Outside the Lines.  Students in  3rd through 5th grade were able to share some of their projects during STEM night at the school. Projects included jointed skeletons, the structure of neurons, insects using recycled materials.  

COMMUNITY SERVICE AND PUBLIC ART
Patterson Park Public Charter School's Colorful SolutionPatterson

Art with a Heart engaged students, faculty, and friends of Patterson Park Public Charter School in the creation of this transformative, painted canvases installed on the sound boards of the School's gymnasium. Thank you to the Southeast Community Development Corporation for their support of this project.  

 

Mosaic Community Services: Self Reflection & Team Building Mosaic

Inspired by the art of  Brianna McCarthy, Art with a Heart facilitated a mixed-media portrait project with the dedicated staff of Mosaic Community Services. Participants enjoyed the opportunity to express their inner artist as they bonded as a team. Family Fun Day Leads to Community Art Installation at Ruscombe GardensFamilyFunDay

On June 23rd, Art with a Heart was thrilled to partner with  Power Plant Live!  at its 2018 Family Fun Day. Attendees enjoyed creating foil flashies which will be incorporated in an  installation  for  Ruscombe Gardens Apartments , a housing complex for aging adults.

ART OF LEADERSHIP
Leaders Visit the Police Department for Open Dialogue About Sensitive IssuesAOL

In June, Art of Leadership students had an informative and engaging visit to Baltimore City Police Headquarters. Students heard from representatives of  911, Dispatch, the Motor Unit, and were able to experience the 'War Room' where officers observe the city  to help curb violence. The highlight was a visit to the Media Relations Department where students asked questions and dialogued with officers. One student reported, "This session caused me to think differently and more open-minded on some sensitive issues." 
HEARTWARES 
HeARTworks Summer Program Brings the Heat... and Delightful Flowers!HeARTworks

On June 25th, Art with a Heart's launched its summer 2018 session of HeARTworks with 60 participants (ages 13-24) from the following community partners: Youth Empowered Society , YouthWorks , Bridges , Thread iAdelante Latina! , Belair-Edison Neighborhoods, Inc. , and Banner Neighborhoods . This summer, youth will be creating ceramic succulent planters, unique mosaic art with up-cycled stained glass, community inspired tapestries, outdoor garden art, and much, much more! In addition , students will be learning important job and life skills.  Food donations are tremendously helpful to this program.
