On Monday, May 14, the Campaign will launch its first nation-wide event of the season with nonviolent moral direct actions in over 30 state capitals. NASW-NJ Executive Director, Jennifer Thompson, provided testimony yesterday before the State Senate Labor Committee in support of S-2528, which would expand and improve upon NJ's Family Leave Insurance and Temporary Disability Insurance programs.
As a partner in the
Time to Care Coalition, NASW-NJ has been working diligently to pass this legislation. In her testimony, Jennifer applauded the inclusion of several major amendments to this bill, including the expansion of who is considered a family member under this law; she also urged the Committee to consider the needs of private practitioners and other self-employed individuals, as well as employees at smaller non-profits and social service agencies.

Students with special needs at a New Jersey high school are learning social skills by spending time each week playing board games with senior-citizen volunteers. The program exposes students to adults of different ages and teaches them "soft skills," such as not interrupting and active listening, special-education teacher Jeffrey Shanfield said.

Recently the social work profession adopted updated ethics standards, regulatory guidelines, and practice standards, especially related to practitioners' use of technology. Dr. Reamer will explain these and explore high-risk ethical issues and practical strategies designed to protect clients and practitioners.
Key topics will include novel forms of service delivery and ways to communicate with clients, management and storage of electronic information, boundary issues, dual relationships, conflicts of interest, confidentiality, privileged communication, informed consent, clients' rights, documentation, and termination of services.

Take Action to Increase
LCSW Reimbursement Rates!
Clinical social workers are one of three mental health professions that provide psychotherapy services for Medicare beneficiaries. Yet, Medicare reimburses clinical social workers at only 75% of the rate reimbursed to psychiatrists and psychologists. This discrepancy deters clinical social workers from becoming Medicare providers and also makes it difficult to retain clinical social workers as Medicare providers, thereby decreasing Medicare beneficiaries' access to mental health services.
The Improving Access to Mental Health Act contains provisions to address this discrepancy and ensure clinical social workers are paid under Medicare at the same rate as other non-physician professionals. Learn more.

This course if for those who have held their LCSW for at least 3 years and who wish to supervise LSWs seeking their clinical hours. Courses are held at our NASW office in North Brunswick.
